The problem isn’t the individual game. It’s an overall narrative that all game studios, all movie studios, and all entertainment in general have to do for DEI. Make whatever you want and don’t call me racist when I don’t buy it.
If Dei means all white men all the time. then I completely agree that's a damn problem. I'm for damn tired of Hollywood and other media programs pushing white men like they're something special when they are definitely not.
No one is calling you racist for not buying the game. But you are pretty racist if you have an issue with AC shadows but not with Noih that had a white guy samurai. I wonder why…
I promise you nobody gives two fcks if you buy the game or not you’re just a racist crying about a real historical figure in a game but is ok with a white guy in this same setting.

Entertainment should be about experiencing different cultures and stories, not about politics and companies trying to "send a message" , I'm saying this as a black person, I don't want a black character if I'm gonna play a game about Japan just like i don't want a white character in a game about ancient Egybt , it takes away from the experience, this isn't too hard to understand, especially seeing all the woke stuff Ubisoft writers are posting about "inclusion" and "culture appropriation" it makes it obvious they're doing this on purpose which is annoying, like you said in the first few seconds of the video "we don't want politics in entertainment" but here we are..
Exactly. I think I would feel very annoyed about this nonsense, if I was a black person myself. Force feeding social agenda to every entertainment seems disrespecting, since its done for nothing else but for social political reasons. Bringing modern political agenda for historical settings is immersion breaking and not respecting diversity in any way.
@samuraidoggy well your not black so shut up, alot of black people are happy that we finally get some representation, we've been playing as white males leads since tge beginning of f Gaming and have not complained not one time, when san andreas first came out white people were made cause the main character was black yall do this anytime a black person is the main character
Yasuke was a real person though. There not pulling this out of thin air #1, and #2 I still don't see the issue when the other protag that no one likes to address, is in fact Japanese. But because shes female its also a problem for people. Lets stop ignoring the female lead of this game that was shown FIRST in the trailer. The literal assassin that is suppose to represent the assassination theme of, *Assassins* Creed. Again this argument is a nothing issue more like a privileged complaint.
people acting like nicole machiavelli was an actual assassin or that Bartholmew Roberts was an actual sage for ancient god aliens, if you’re upset about the the game you’re either don’t wanna play as a black guy or don’t wanna play as a girl.
It's a video game where people are using advanced technology from an ancient civilization. It's a video game. Meaning NOT REAL. Meaning they could make Yasuke look like John Goodman and it wouldn't matter. Because it's a game. But don't be mistaken, I'm not going to consider getting this game until I see some gameplay.
That's not really the issue, it's the fact they said it's based on a real person during that era and now they pull back and say shit like it's loosely based on a person that might have been a samurai or not
The fact he’s black is fine, it’s more the fact that out of the ENTIRE Japanese history they chose this guy as the MAIN character. He would have been a great side character
Ill tell you why they chose him. Its because of this exact reaction its getting from you. This is a company at the end of the day and every move they make is strategic. Like iv said at the end of this video, no one would be talking about this game outside of the core gamer demographic, if they had just another historical Japanese figure as a playable character. Its not a matter of inclusion its a matter of, this is just different than the typical experience from a story like this. Its part of the reason Shogun was as successful as it is too
You realise I’m going to play the game and enjoy it. Did you even read my initial comment? People constantly take the thing the wrong way. I’m stating the audience reaction at hand.
I personally don’t have a problem with playing as a black Samurai. But this is an assassins creed game. I would have rather play as a fictional Japanese samurai and have yasuke as a side character you interact with. I know Ubisoft only did it for “representation”. Plus he was more of a body guard compared to what they are going to make him in the game.
How is it that with Shogun, where a main character who's white, lands in Japan no one has anything to say about it, but when its Yasuke its a problem? I don't mind you wanting to play as a Japanese samurai. But when outrage only seems to hit a boiling point with this game specifically, it comes off as very suspect. Especially considering Shogun just aired to critical acclaim. Its just weird bro. The body guard bit you said, is what my whole video is about. This franchise is history mixed with fiction. It doesn't matter.
Being a social media person myself and having a reaction channel with 40k subs, I can say confidently that through out twitter AND our reaction videos, no one was talking about this. I only ever hear about shit like this when it has to do with a black character because of all the anti-DEI people. If this reached me but not the Shogun bit, thats off. In fact the only thing iv heard from people is that Shogun is based off a true story.
its not about representation man Assassin's Creed always had a fictional character interacting with historical characters and we always had protagonist native to the settings of the game. Heck we have two Balck Assassin's already. I would have very much liked to play with a male and female Japanese MC where one is stealth focused and other one is melee. Heck from the trailer my main would most probably be Naoe cus its a Assassin's Creed game meaning stealth.@@johncruz1780
@CelticCowboy2K Dude Edward was a welsh pirate, and there was Blackbeard too it was a pirate game what did you want with a pirate game. Pirates travelled all over the places
@CelticCowboy2K It mostly takes place in the sea where all races if people are present, and Edward is not a historical character but Yasuke is. They could have made Yasuke an ally to the MC like every other AC does
By the way, this is not a historical accurate game. It’s a fantasy game they’re just using the real life black guy from Japan to make a fantasy game. A lot of games of them that even call of duty
When "Nioh" came out and the main character was a White Irishman in Japan, no one criticized us having a White main character... (Mind, Irish people were never in feudal Japan) When we have a Black character in Japan, it's the end of the world... (Mind, there actually was a Black person in feudal Japan) In fact, Yasuke was in "Nioh" too... as a boss, still no one made a fuss about it... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ux-P4TzGIPU.html Ridiculous world we live in... By the way, Professor in Japanese Literature and Culture is involved in with Ubisoft in the game and this is what she had to say...ru-vid.comRbokgAGz-2A
First of all, Nioh is totally fantasy game, people wouldnt care even if it had a black female as main character, as the game doesnt even try to be anywhat realistic setting. Secondly, Assassins Creed is much bigger series and gains more attention from people. I am not saying its better, but its more popular and well known franchise and thus topic for conversations.
I am not the biggest fan of Assassin's Creed. I only ever liked Revelations, Origins, and Odyssey (Odyssey was the best Assassin's Creed game). The rest of the games were either disappointing like Assassin's Creed 2, or over rated like Black Flag, or straight up sucked like Valhalla. I hadn't played mirage yet because I don't have a PS5 and since it is not coming out on steam, I am not going out of my way to create an account on another platform just to play it. With that being said, I don't really have a problem with Yasuke. Because Yasuke was a historical figure who was black. This means that the black community is getting actual representation and not the fake representation that is race swapping. If this kick starts a trend where the entertainment industry stops the race swapping and puts in real effort to make original characters to represent the various peoples of this world, then I am all for this. As far as Ubisoft changing history by making Yasuke a samurai in the game, you all didn't have a problem with Ubisoft changing history to make Templars into villians and promoting the false idea that they were basically medieval nazis for nearly 20 years, so you all should not have a problem with Yasuke being made into a samurai.
@@FlameHAZE2010 he was never a Samurai. thats like calling every 15th century soldier on the battlefield a Knight also, the Game is made by Ubisoft Quebec, its a french canadian company, and the story was written by a white lady so... yeh, indeed, very japanese
@@TheRealSladeValentine Yet again, if the Japanese themselves portray him as a Samurai why can't we? If he's portrayed as a samurai in Japanese media, why can't the same be true for Western media?
@@FlameHAZE2010 again, he was NEVER a samurai. hard isnt it, english my goodness. even the japanese himself say he was most likely a Bushi (warrior) if anything. warrior's are NOT samurai. soldiers, mercenaries, bodyguards also could be Bushi.
You should look at the Japanese RU-vid trailer it also has as more dislikes than likes, even Japanese people are puzzled by having yasuke as the main character. I feel people are more mad for as to why all of a sudden Ubisoft decided to make this change, like for the past assassin creed games such as odyssey, origins, Valhalla they all used people from their time period and events, but for some reason the first assassin creed game set in Japan and they decided have yasuke as one of the main characts. It makes me question as to why they did this. plus if u look up the writer for the game it all makes sense and makes me worried about how the story is gonna be. I feel like there wouldn’t be as much hate if they made yasuke like a side character that we get to encounter in the story or some dlc.
The black samurai was a real person. Came to Japan during the time frame of the game as a slave to a Christian missionary. The lord of the land liked him and kept him, bonding with him until he granted him the rank of samurai.
@Netrunner1337 16 months is a long time. It was probably the only black man they ever saw and possibly the biggest man they ever saw. He was likely seen as an asset of war because of his appearance.
People are just mad because they didn't go the route of a Japanese samurai but he was real don't matter if he was there for 16 months you can still become a samurai especially for someone of his size and strength it would be stupid not to make him a warrior
@@3OverhausBecoming a samurai also means being born into it in feudal Japanese society. Inclusivity in gaming went full circle and became cannibalistic. Wokeism is a cult.
What most people seem to care about isn't the fact that the character is black, we're scared of the way they'll use the character. Ubisoft seems to only be wanting to include this character for political messaging of "white people bad, black people good." Along with that people are scared that people will try to say the fact the character was this over-the-top samurai was true. And frankly people are tired of it. Now if they don't do that which so far seems the case at least with the single trailer they've put out, but no one would be surprised if they did use this as some political messaging.
@@dylanopdeweegh2285 I did and they treat the fact that since he was a retainer to mean that he was a full samurai which isn't the case. That would be like an intern at Goldman Sachs was a full buisness man selling bonds
“Ubisoft wants to give the political message of white people bad”. Did you missed the last major Assassins Creed game (Valhalla) You people are so dumb, is comical
Dude it's like a white guy playing Muhammed Ali. If you gonna make a game based on true historical event then make it so. Egypt wasn't happy when they had Black female playing Cleopatra
Assassins Creed the franchise, by definition is a series that mixes history, and fiction. Its not trying to represent a 1 to 1 "true historical event". Yasuke is a real historical figure that is obviously taking liberties with its source material
Yasuke was a black male hiding in japan, he was never ever a legend figure. To Japenese people he is a nobody. Yasuke should of been used differently in the game, not as a Samurai, not a main character, maybe a side character in a stealth mission.
I have been following the story and literally never seen a single person complain that the issue is lack of historical accuracy. The issue is shoehorning in DEI in the most cackhanded way. It take you out the story, it makes the agenda clear, it makes you feel like you're being lectured to and not being sold an honest product. But, good job, err, arguing against a point nobody is making.

@@TheRealSladeValentine It’s undeniable obvious that the “bad reaction” isn’t at all largely form the Japanese people. But westerners being offended on behalf of them. The pre-order slaws for AC Shadows in Japan are really strong.
The same people that are defending this also defended a black Cleopatra, black Queen Charlotte, black Jarl Hakkon, black Little Mermaid, black Heimdall, black Juliet, black Alexander Hamilton, and black Little Mermaid. The list goes on and on. Meanwhile, the lead writer for Assassin's Creed Shadows describes herself as a "slampig" who servers "Black Kings". Btw, this is coming from someone who recently edited together a mini TV series out of his Mafia 3 gameplay to show my sister because Lincoln Clay is one of my favorite protagonists of all time.
Please read the comment I just posted. I propaply am one of "those people".... but I am also an Assassins Creed fan And he is the perfekt protagonist, because he was REAL (or at least inspired by a real person) And I am actually surprised how few people know that... even the ones defending him 😂😂😂 I dont like race-swap in media, no matter the "direction" And I swear, I have been praying for him ever since an Assassins Creed game in japan was only a fan concept in my head. He is the first protagonist to have a real life inspirarion. A african man, who MYSTERIOUSLY just showed up in japanese historyic record at some point, having the rights to bear arms and even lead some troops into battle, later in his life, for his Lord. This dude is REAL and also an absolute mystery. P.E.R.F.E.C.T There are multiple videos out there, going over the few records we have on him, and he is an enigma, but he was definatly real. How exactly he came to be in Japan, and how he even earned the rights to carry a Katana or if he was an actuall Samurai by definition and title, we dont know. But we know he existed. How is that not the perfect AC protagonist?
You both sound young, so let me put this into perspective for you guys. Context matters A LOT in these cases. If your series or game is trying to be a 1 to 1 historical documentary, then yes changing the race of a historical figure could be problematic. If your series in question is a mix of history and fiction, none of the "controversy" is real cause fiction will always play a role when reality and fiction are mixed. Assassins Creed literally has alien shit in its series. Yasuke in this case, just being featured as 1 of the 2 main characters, is hardly the most fictional thing this series has written in. Idc what the lead writer does on her free time lol
Assassin's creed has always slightly changed how events happened during history to fit the narrative they are trying to tell, so the point of Yasuke being a samurai, slave, retainer or whatever angle they are saying is just pointless. I do think Yasuke being a protagonist to play as is a little odd. He's the first playable character from history to be chosen, which is odd because they have never done it before. I feel he would would of been best suited for a side character role a key one because his story is quite interesting from what we know. If anyone has a right to pissed at Yasuke being the protagonist, its Japanese people because they haven't had many Asian male representations or at least thats the argument I've seen online.
There is a firestorm of backlash because of the choice of Yasuke as one of the protagonists. For some, it's clearly because Yasuke is not an ethnic Japanese character in Japan. This argument is strange, because Naoe is a Japanese main protagonist. The devs said that they wanted to have a foreigner act as an avatar for people discovering Japan, and settled on Yasuke. If they had chosen the Englishman, William Adam, some of these some criticisms would apply, but there would be no "DEI choice" criticism. You might get actually get "White savior trope" criticisms. With all that said: suck on it LONG and hard "DEI sucks" crowd. You're mad because he's Black. Not to be confused with people who wanted BOTH characters to be Japanese, or people nit-picking the historicity. No, you're not them. You're e angry because of Yasuke, who is Black. It's the Blackness. LOL.
I get where the whining is coming from I guess because it seems to happen so much and There's certain situations where I think the swapping is stupid like having an old black dude play Alexander the Great....but this one? This is fine!. This is totally legit as a game and Yasuke is a cool character anyway. It's fiction. Who cares if there's a badass black samurai? And how many white boys play Madden? So why is it an issue playing a tough black dude in Japan? I think it's just become a knee jerk reaction to get annoyed at race swap stuff even though this isn't what they think it is.
@@gaalattila829 but he was... just google it He was real, and over many years of service to his Lord, he earned the right to carry the Katana (nobody knows how exactly he did it, there are no records unfortunalty, but I put my money on : he safed the Lords life at some point, somehow..? Maybe he foiled an assassination attempt on him by sheer luck, who knows) If he was an actual samurai BY TITLE is debated by historians. But he had some prestige to his name in the end and even led troops into battle. Google: real african samurai. You will find tons of articles and books about him, read up
He was a samurai for a while stop complaining because you didn't get your Japanese samurai so your disclaiming this one of ever being one maybe not his whole life but he was one and it not the same as black panther he is a king of an African country this is just a black man who was a samurai some point in his life maybe not an important one but still
Just Yasuke wasn't made a samurai in the game. Yasuke was a warrior of the highest rank for a lord (oda). A samurai is a warrior that works under rule of a lord and when the lord dies the samurai become ronin. So even tho everybody calls him a "bodyguard" Yasuke was a samurai.
I don't mind them having Yasuke as a MC, I'd just prefer it be someone else, with him making an appearance. Also I think people want this to be like Ghosts of Tsushima because of the Sengoku era being a more popular period.
ok let's get this straight people are criticizing AC shadows because the MC is Black and even if they deny it, it's true though but still imma buy the game😁
Yasuke got milked out that's what I can see on this matter. I dunno with others why would they hate yasuke himself. Meanwhile me i hate the fact that Yasuke got milked out for the company's social agenda. Yasuke deserves better. Standalone Yasuke game is better than him existing on AC just for the sake of having him there plus it can create confusion coz historically, yasuke's record got blur after honnoji incident coz Yasuke is very loyal to nobunaga. AC memories nobunaga was assassinated by the brotherhood due to possession of sword of eden. To add on that, Nobunaga is an ally of Assassin's he just got power hungry with sword of eden that's why he got targeted. On this case, Yasuke didn't deserve the idea of being there coz he'll be treated as either accomplice for the assassins since he got involve on the trailer or he will betray the assassins which doesnt help the idea for AC Shadows. To people out there who think samurais are the templars, AC memories and the comics tagged these clans who supports templars: Takeda, Uesugi, Mori, Shimazu. Even Edward Kenway crossed paths with the shimazu clan against the Fuma. One of the arguments stated that, why would a bodyguard leave their master's unit? Samurai bodyguard does not and should not leave their masters would be a strong argument here but, yes this is only a game. If Ubisoft will narrate that Yasuke will be granted as a "bushi" (bushi is the term for warriors one who were fighting on the frontlines or fighting on the battlefield equivalent term is a soldier in modern day.) there is no contest as long as a supporting details about it would be included. Last is I hope yasuke will be at nobunaga's side as much possible than a betrayer in honnoji. I don't want yasuke to be there on the game as ubisoft's milking machine that's why he does not deserve to be an MC if they treat him this way. Yasuke as a Key NPC is also good and he will help the protag always is much better like Niccolo Machiaveli type of narrative would suit best for him tbh. Again, I like Yasuke but Yasuke in AC shadows? He got milked and that's not good. Yasuke on other games are chad. For example, Nioh 2 he retrieved nobunaga's body away from the demons and looters, next is Samurai Warriors 5 makes him playable. Hell, Yasuke has also a Nobunaga's ambition treatment; You can make him literally a shogun with few game editor tweaks and he has a futuristic samurai design on Nobunaga's Ambition 201X. (yes these games are not historically accurate on what's happening at least they are not trying to shove on everyone's throat that "COME ON PREORDER NOW COZ YASUKE IS HERE" ) (english is my secondary language forgive me of my grammar and sentence construction.)
Its like you didnt hear the next part were i talk about shogun getting a season 2, which by default makes further content fictional Lol. They are going passed the sourced material. Watch the whole video first b4 you judge anyones ability to research

I you are correct, that this could be an interesting angle and they are allowed to change history as this series is just inspired by history and not a documentary. On the other hand. i kind of understand the outrage. People are oversensitive at the moment because of all the stupid things that are happening around. They believe that they forced the character in not because of the story, but because of politics and honestly i believe they are correct. 1. we already had 2 black african characters in Assassins Creed or did you forget Adewale and Aveline de Granpré? if so, thats on you then 2. all Assassins Creed games featured characters native to their home country, up till the latest Valhalla. Altair was Arabic from Jeruzalem, Ezio was Italian, Conner being Native American in America, Jacob and Evie Frye being Britshish in the UK and ect 3. Yasuke was never a real Samurai to begin with, but more akin to a squire/retainer or bodyguard 4. you can call it entitled but after numerous BS about blackwashing shit it becomes extremely tiresome (not only in video games but also in tv shows and movies. From a black Anne boleyn, and a black Mac Bethaid Macfinláech and a Black female Håkon Jarl and a Black Joan D'Arc and a black Cleopatra) 5. call it entitled, and bs all you want but, it is highly sus that now all of the sudden we need a black character all of the sudden for a game set in japan whereas every other AC games got a character from their native countries. including your own Italy, with Ezio. funny that when it is Japan its suddenly BS and Entitlement? says a lot about you then 6. also, no worries with people not getting it. considering from what i have seen about their trailers, its a flop already.
