Slightly remixed version of AOP13, the Vox Humana chords are (I think) now more faithful to the original and I've upped the Moog basses and panned them to give (hopefully) a beefier sound..
This is for Dad....RIP..28/08/35-12/08/10. I remember us so well watching this landmark film together and being blown away by both film and the music.....
Also thanks to Joeri Peters for his superb work in sampling the Polymoog's most famous preset, Vox Humana, and so generously donating it on his website...
Equipment used, Minimoog Model D, Nord Lead 3, Cubase 5, Recycle.

So simple of a song but I think it's one of the best themes out of any movie. Great job!

Hi, Thanks for your compliments! Yes, I have the original soundtrack on CD but the only thing I sampled were the first 4 bars of the drum machine...The rest I played myself, all bass sounds are from the Minimoog, the strings sound is sampled from the Polymoog, Vox Humana preset (but played manually, and also a Nord Lead 3 is playing the sustained high pitch note. Everything was then recorded into Cubase.

This is a truly amazing cover. You just don't get anything like that analogue fatness any more. Hats off my friend.

Thanks for your comments, I wouldn't like to guess on the drum machine used, it could even have been percussion sounds generated from a synth and driven by an old step-sequencer. I did read somewhere that JC used a Moog Modular which he rented and not a Minimoog for AOP13. I reckon he also used a Fender Rhodes for one of the tracks. Sorry, not done any other JC covers so far...

Watched AOP13 last night and I wasn't wrong with my assumption your versison is spot on. Do you know what synth, drum machine JC used on the original soundtrack? Also It would be very interesting to hear any othe JC covers you may have done maybe The Fog, EFNY or Halloween.

damn this is awesome. Did you sample the film soundtrack at all? that rthymn track sounds very, very close to the original!

Man this sounds so darn identical to the original. Magnificent!! I myself just might get me a mini model d. But I wonder if it's possible to achieve identical sounds on the mini heard in Carpenter's other soundtracks too like The Fog & Halloween. Interestingly enough, this soundtrack & the other two I mentioned actually used a Moog modular IIIp for the most part. Don't know if there's much or any Minimoog on them soundtracks. Hope there is a way to make a mini sound just like the modular, but in this demo, it sounds just like it. Keep it up :).

Necro-Bump: I know Halloween used a Moog Modular like Precinct 13, however I can't really say for The Fog...

@philbluntuk Thanks very much indeed, bud. Glad you liked it! To be honest, the drum machine is lifted straight from the original by John Carpenter (=sampled into Recycle, looped then copied into Cubase as a REX file) and the chord part is also a sample of the preset "Vox Humana" from the Polymoog. And the high pitched bit at the beginning with the glissando effect is actually a Nord Lead III :-) The Minimoog is the real deal though and I tried to layer it as Mr. Carpenter did in his orginal.

@GNeuman I actually wondered about the drumtrack, well, at least the percussive part that plays from the very onset. The tip-tap part. Listening to this for the 40th time today, you really HAVE done well here. Apart from Gary Numan, could you recommend any other popular or obscure artists/tracks that do this kind of electronica?? I'm new to it (at 28). I come from a background of early 90s rave, and I'm really interested to go back in time and learn about electronica roots!

Hi mate, amazing video man. Im doing a project at uni for animation, and need to get something thats sounds like this the assault on precinct theme/john carpenter style music, but i cant use it as its copyrighted, would there be a way you could do one just a bit different so i could get a way with using it? Thanks
@GNeuman
@GNeuman 13 лет назад
@philbluntuk Uh oh, Phil...difficult question, that one, as I'm not really that well-listened musically..I don't really know of any really obscure early electronica artists that do this kind of music...Maybe have you heard of Alan Vega in his two-piece band, Suicide? Has vocals though, but full of cheap beat-boxes and wacky keyboards :-) Ghost Rider by them is a great track, but this is all personal taste of course and the album (also called Suicide) with that track on is well worth a listen.

Exactly what settings did you have when you made this cover for the Moog synth?
@GNeuman
@GNeuman 7 лет назад
Hello, The Minimoog actually has two parts..The first part is just one oscillator set to sawtooth @ 32'. The second part which comes in later is all three oscillators, I can't remember which waveforms, I think there were two set to 32' and one set to 16'

Thank you, great cover btw ;3
@GNeuman
@GNeuman 7 лет назад
Thank you! I'm sorry I can't be more accurate with the Settings on the Minimoog......It's a while since I did this.....The drum machine is a direct sample from the Assault on Precinct 13 soundtrack CD and the string sounds are samples of the Vox Humana preset on the Polymoog as well as a Nord Lead 3. So, it's quite a mix of analogue/digital/sampling...Considering the Technology that John Carpenter had to work with at the time plus the time pressure to record something was immense due to the high rental and studio costs, the man is a Genius, all I have done is try to slavishly copy his tune...
