Some new and some old parts combined to make a high end commercial pressure washer for half the price.
Honda 13hp with 4gpm 4000psi 66DX Cat Pump.
CAT pump: amzn.to/2gRc4CA
50' Hose: amzn.to/2FJ2GMh
Wand 4000psi : amzn.to/2pd7of0
Quick Connect Adapters: amzn.to/2FEViW3
WINTERIZER: amzn.to/2gQoAlI
Ideally a belt drive will give longer life. Belt drive units are the ultimate professional pressure washers and they will get the benefit from being able to gravity feed out of a water tank, lower pump temps after hours and hours of straight running and ideally more longevity. Personally I will never run this for hours on end nor do I need to gravity feed out of a tank. If you plan on running it for a business, 25+ hours a week, for years, go belt drive. But personally I didn't want to source pulleys, belts, make guards or spend the extra for a belt drive pump. The cat pump I used has an average lifespan of over 3000hours, so I could use it for 3 hours a week for the next 20years before I need to do a major service.
CAT spec sheets show the only longevity difference is bearing life due to rpm differences in direct(3600rpm 6k-10k hours) vs belt(below 1200rpm/1/3 engine speed 12k-18k hours).
Direct Drive Pump
Pros: Compact design, lower cost, more efficient
Cons: More vibration and heat from motor transferred to pump, higher rpm
Belt Driven Pump
Pros: Longer life from lower RPM, belt absorbs vibration, won’t overheat.
Cons: More maintenance, higher cost, less efficient.

Just recently bought a hurricane 4300psi 4gpm but I will say that keeping the trigger squeezed is the number one thing that helps longevity. I bought a CH back in 01' and it still works after 17 years of personal use.

I'm retired but work part time for a Cub dealer. Most of the pressure washers we see in the shop are simply no maintenance. They get used once then sit for a year in freezing temps. I bought a new cub cadet with a Honda GX motor. It's a CC3600. I ran it for a couple of hours then I changed the oil in the pump to a good pump oil. After I use it I run water through the pump without a nozzle on the wand. This runs a larger volume of water without creating heat. I also use pump saver in the pump if it's going to be setting for more than a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can get a lot of use out of it. Great video and nice pressure washer.

UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust ru-vid.comUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Yeah, I've never seen a pump outlast a pressure washer engine either. I know this business owner that has a lot of pressure washers and for the past 7 years I've been servicing all of his machines. For the first 15 or so years those things never even had an oil change until I started servicing his equipment, all have Honda GX engines, some GX200, 270, 340, 390 engines. A GX200 and GX340 being his original and most used machines. The guy had used them all enough to wear the original sparkplugs center electrodes down to a round nub and the ground strap almost completely worn away, and almost did the same thing on the second plug in 5 years on the GX340 machine. All had original pumps, actually the last two original pumps are getting replaced right now. All of these had Cat, old style AR pumps and an older Comet pump. No telling how many thousands of hours are on those engines, and they still run like a champ, every single one of them. I am very surprised how long his pumps have lasted for having no care to them whatsoever other than the unloader valves giving issues in later years from being packed full of silt and debris and sitting over the off season. I will say the newer AR and Cat pumps I've replaced some of the old ones with haven't been nowhere near as good. I had to put a check valve kit in a 2 year old AR pump a few years back, one of the discs randomly broke.

Revisited this video because I won a Excell Devilbiss ( I think ) ZR3600 with a 13hp Honda motor on Govdeals. $100 ( $106 total ). It'll take me a minute or too to save up for the CAT pump. I won't even look at the pump that's on there as it was sold as non-running. Thanks for the maintenance tips too as this will be an occasional tool in the arsenal but I want it to be a bedrock item that I won't have to worry about crapping out so long as I take care of it.

Great job. I have a similar power washer set up...Honda motor/cat pump, with issues: after using the power washer for 30 sec, the engine starts to sputter and dies, unless I stop spraying. Good gas flow, clean carb, clean air filter, new plug...thoughts? Researched replacing unloader valve??
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
Unloader valve only if the engine stalls when the trigger isn't pulled. If stalling while the trigger is depressed/spraying water it's going to be lack of fuel or the oil level sensor with a Honda. To test lack of fuel get a pair of vice grips to pinch the fuel line. Run the machine and immediately when it stalls pinch the fuel line. Release the fuel bowl nut and measure the amount of fuel that drains out. To test the oil level sensor simply unplug it and run the machine.

I was washing the sidewalk and notice leaves were scattering even where the water wasn't touching. It pushes a cushion of air in front of the water and pushes leaves effortlessly. That would probably pay for itself pretty quick doing commercial work.

@sixtyfiveford

Yes, bypass. When you release the trigger the pump will circulate water from the high pressure side through the hose to the low pressure side. This is to help cool the pump and slow the overheating process.

The two biggest things to take away is making sure to get a quality pump and to keep the water flowing. The only other thing is to get the highest GPM possible...a lot of pressure without much volume doesn't cut it. Thanks, Moe...you always have the low-down on the good stuff!!

@sixtyfiveford

No, I wish there was. The water in the pump will just continually circulate and heat up. You can let off for a minute or so, but then press the trigger for 5 seconds and let it sit again.

The set up that I have (Honda 13hp and General Pump pump) has a “header tank/reservoir tank” whatever you want to call it.. this tank is what your garden hose connects to and it has a float valve shut off. This tank supplies water to your pump inlet. When the pump is in bypass (when the gun trigger is not being pressed), the bypassed water flows to this reservoir tank and mixes with cold water in the tank before it will feed the pump again and continues this cycle. This eliminates the water getting too hot and damaging pump when in bypass. I would highly recommend this set up for pump longevity. Had this set up for many years and no issues at all even during times when I’m not on the trigger and engine is still running at operating speed. Only thing is you will need a different unloaded/pressure regulator valve. My valve is a three way valve. One port connects to the pumps high pressure outlet, another to the gun hose, and the last port connects to the bypass hose which goes to the reservoir tank.

I'm thinking about cannibalizing a sonjo 2000 PSI electric pressure washer to reduce it down to its smallest package to mount somewhere on where on my Van just to use as a just to use as a cleaning tool when I'm on the road to wash out the engine or anything that I need to clean. Wondering if you could possibly build one maybe with a small square frame of its bare essentials because it looks like the sun Joe could be broken down to just the input and output like I said it was electric and there shouldn't be much more to it than that other than mounting it onto some kind of a frame which I can then bolt somewhere onto the cargo Van.

@@sixtyfiveford I have the Sun Joe SPX3000-RM 2030 PSI 1.76 GPM Electric Pressure Washer. The upright design is just not needed for my intended use. Ill look through your videos if you did one on the teardown of the unit, and other take apart vids on YT so I can see what components ill be dealling with. There are "low profile" units for sale such as the Ryobi system, but I think it might be fun to build one from the Sun Joe I already have. It will see limit use, maybe once a month or so to maintain and keep clean components on my vehicle. The low GPM is sufficient to conserve on board water supply and the pressure is decent. Last time I used it was to clean off the brakes before replacing them on the vehicle. I also use it to keep the engine compartment clean. I'll make a video of the process and post it when I do it.

I wouldn't know what I was missing if I hadn't owned a few huge machines. My first(still have it) pressure washer was a $30-50 broken pump 2600psi 2.2gpm unit. I rebuilt the pump for $40 and used it for years until the pump wore out again(30ish hours). Another $40 and it has gone another 30ish hours and still works. Every-time I get a big pressure washer in I'm in heaven with how fast and well it cleans, but I always sell them off and regret it. I should have no problem keeping this one around for the next ten years and selling it off for $1000-1200.

Whats your opinion on AR pumps? I scored a 3000 psi M-I-TM commercial pressure washer that just had a broken kill switch and it has an AR pump. Also, do the regulator springs weaken after alot of use? Ive used other 3000 psi washers and this one feels just a tad bit weaker.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
AR makes decent pumps and M-i-TM puts together some nice units. PSI really doesn't make much of a difference in feel. 3000psi can be obtained by the wimpiest pressure washer. What you will notice is the flow rate/GPM coupled to PSI. The AR pump more than likely has an adjustable unloader valve and the pressure can be turned up/down.

Ok the question is: how to know what size of pump (psi) do I need depending on the engine horse power? For a 6.5hp engine, what pump do I need?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
A 6.5hp engine is going to give you a pump around 3000psi and 3gpm max. You can go lower in psi 2500 and get 3.5gpm or just the opposite to 3500psi and get 2.5gpm. These are ballpark numbers. If you plan on cleaning things like cement, decks, ect you'll want to go with a higher GPM so you can do more work faster. Gallons Per Minute is a measure of how much water is pushed out. The more water the more debris will be carried away. If you want to blast small things like heavy grime off an engine then higher PSI will benefit vs GPM.
@phatrides222000
@phatrides222000 6 лет назад
what about a triple A pump or AAA as on the pump?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
There are a handful of top pump brands. It pretty much boils down to you get what you pay for. Super cheap pumps have a life of less than 60 total hours. This is fine for a homeowner that washes their car 5 times a summer at 1hr a time as it will give them 5-10years of use. These pumps are sold with PSI being the only selling point and no real claim for GPM which is far more important. I know Simpson likes to use AAA as a cheaper alternative(It's their Chinese house brand). Based on the price point I wouldn't expect more than 150hours of use on a AAA. This is acceptable depending on how much you are going to use it. Compare that to a commercial brand that will run 3000+hours.

They're better at everything pressure washing wise. I've often thought of using an old oil burner furriness motor to build one. Thought I'd use a 25 gallon steel drum and some copper tubing, make it a separate unit with it's own kart/wheels, and just plug the pressure washer into it (and the hose n wand out of it). The hardest part would be the temp control I think...

yes they do I have used their heated pressure washers, amazing build quality and performance. With Hotsy though to get the level of performance he has here you're looking at $2500, this is a great option for someone starting off in pressure washing perhaps they could mount this on a trailer with a small pump running to it and have a good trailer for relatively lower cost then a brand new Hotsy trailer unit.

@@jhomrich89you can get a 4000psi belt driven cold pressure washer for $1700 most homeowners/small business need about 2300-3300 psi. Its closer to a General pump now. Hotsy/Landa/Mosmatic/Pressure Pro/Karcher are all one company now. Karcher bought them all up. Alkota and Hydrotek are one company now. Aladdin is its own company(wouldn't recommend). The CAT pump you are seeing is essentially a private labeled pumps for whatever distributor is throwing together the chassis so they can charge more for the CAT name and parts. These are not equivalent to the commercial/ industrial CAT pumps that CAT built its name on. my 0.02 most of the guys i see starting out take the handles/wheels off the cold units and just mount the chassis to their trailer. i wouldnt advise a guy starting out to buy a CAT pump. i would recommend something that has cheaper service ability and rebuild ability. #1 choice -HOTSY #2 choice - Comet pump. need them and are not buying commercial/industrial versions. I agree with you about CAT pumps! My one AAA pump was shot after two years and my previous two (four and five years old) with General pumps have practically no pressure. They all had pressure gauges, unloaders and inlet filters with rarely being run longer than 60 seconds without the trigger or flow relieved. I find that ball valves are a necessity when switching between the surface cleaner and gun and letting the pump cool down after use with a low idle run and no restrictions on the line. It didn't matter on the first three for they just didn't last. I now have a CAT 4200 psi @ 4.0 gpm and so far after eight months and close to 300 hours of use it's been great. I did change my methods and now run 50 feet of hose and position the pressure washer where I can continuously work without having to stop and move, this lessens my operating time and it's worth spending the money on a longer line. Granted pressure is reduced but with a high quality hose it's minimal. Awesome video..

The problem with that is that the bearings in the pump are not designed to take a side load. The side load from the belt tension would ruin the pump. You would need to use a couplepillow blocks and a jack shaft to have any service life at all.

All the high quality pumps I've come across with "issues" almost always needed only a valve kit (which is a simple and cheap fix) and then were back up and working as original. People leave water in the pump and it rots the valves. IMO the AR pumps made in Italy and the cat pumps are both really good high quality made units!
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
I've serviced and resold a fair amount of pressure washers with AR pumps, I think they're good. Cat, AR and General are the most known commercial pumps and all last, but I think Cat has the best reputation for themselves.
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 7 лет назад
That's my experience as well. People either leave water in them and it freezes or trash is sent into the pump because they don't flush the low pressure line before connecting to the pump. Few pulls on the cord with the high pressure side open clears any pump I've had.

Just make sure all the fittings before the pump and up to the bypass valve are stainless or brass (preferably brass). I'm having to replace the pump on my pressure washer, an Annovi Rebevari 2200psi 3gpm because someone had originally installed a galvanized T where the bypass line attaches to the input, and it rusted on the inside. There was also what looks like a stainless 90 degree elbow coming out of the pump, going to the regulator, but inside it's all full of rust. I'm replacing it with the same pump as of course the Honda engine has tons of life left (the original pump lasted 23 years). It would've lasted longer if it weren't for the rust getting into it. One of the ceramic pistons cracked (either from rust build up, or possibly from freezing- hard to say for sure), and once a piston is cracked, it doesn't make sense to rebuild. A new pump is cheaper at that point.

How do I make a hot water pressure washer like this? 150 degrees and up?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
There is a lot of work that goes into wanting to make a hot pressure washer. Ideally you have the cold water enter the pump and basically where you would have the pressure washer hose you have steel pipe coiled over/around a burner. There will need to be a pressure blow off valve as you are essentially making a pressure bomb. A high temp hose after that burner will need to be used along with a few other items. Hotsy is one of the top manufactures and I suggest you look at them online and in person. I had plans to build one but after looking for a while I found a cheap used Hotsy.

good idea to get pressure gauge & adjust not to exceed pumps rating , say 3300 you want gauge to read that or less when ' not ' pulling the trigger otherwise pump will burn up prematurely. I've had mine for years, they're simple ^ easy to repair relatively cheap.

I have a zr2700 that's probably 12 years old. Just now having pressure issues, so am replacing the unloader. Hopefully that's the problem. Thought about a new pump and in future I may, but for now it's the unloader. Hell that was a hundred for that. It's a 3 gal per minute with a 6.5 Honda engine. Do you really think you need 13 for a 4gpm,or just have it so using it? Never had pump off. Does shaft have splines, or a keyway? I can't fathom a small set screw not shearing. Anyway thanks for the video. Nice to see how easy it is to replace pump if mines seen better days. Only shows 1100 psi on the gauge. Hoping new unloader puts it back to 2700 or at least close. ✌️

Kranzle has the best pump. Period. You can run it idle without water flow, you can’t do that with a Cat. For everyone else, the Honda motor costs $3-400. So $100 + $580 + $400 = the cost of one already put together making your video useless.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
The 5CP3120 is the closest CAT pump for Belt Drive(4.5gpm 3500psi) You just need pulleys that are half of each other. The engine will spin at 3400-3600 at full throttle and the pump is rated to 1600-1800rpm. So for example put a 3 inch pulley on the engine and 6 inch on the pump. So what ever size pulley you already have on the engine just find one exactly 2x as big for the CAT pump.

@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews 7 лет назад
Pressure ratings on all pumps is the pressure the unloader is set at. The better the pump the closer it will maintain that pressure with the trigger pulled. Never seen a pump with anything melted. Only way I see that happening is if the thermal bypass is malfunctioning, or if the low pressure water is turned off while the pump is in operation. I don't see many people changing the pump oil. Change it bi-annually, don't let water freeze in them, and flush the low pressure hose before connecting it to the pump and they will last much longer than the hours you were claiming.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 7 лет назад
Homeowners don't do any of this. Most of the spare $25-50 motors I pick up are off sub $500 pressure washers. On average the people are irritated by the brand and only claim to have used it a dozen times at the most before it crapped out. With proper maintenance 50hours is quit a while for the average homeowner. That lets you use it 5-10 times a summer for 5-10 years. The claimed lifespan of a high quality wobble plate pump is 200hours, but sub $500 pressure washers generally have cheaply made Chinese pumps that never get maintenance. The worst seam to be the vertical shaft mounted units, running standard lawn mower engines.

Worst advice. Bending the shaft will cause more stress on the arms. Instead of pushing straight back it will push opposite direction of the bend. If you bend it downward then it'll be pushing back and up. Then your fighting to keep it forward and down.

You could, but I think it would nickle and dime you with fittings, pulleys, bearings etc. You would need a male stub shaft for each one and maybe a pillow block bearing for the end of each stub shaft. You would also need around 25hp to run it. You can get a 4.5gpm(needs around 13hp) which will do pressure washer sand blasting for around $250 amzn.to/2KovjSA

I was thinking about putting a pressure washer to gether using an old mighty mac sprayer frame, kind like a wagon frame. My question: Pros and cons of directly bolting the pump to the engine vs belt drive?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
Direct Drive Pump Pros: Compact design, lower cost, more efficient Cons: More vibration and heat from motor transferred to pump, higher rpm Belt Driven PumpPros: Longer life from lower RPM, belt absorbs vibration, won’t overheat.Cons: More maintenance, higher cost, less efficient.

Is there any rigs that you are unable to change the pump on? I have a Powerstroke 3100 psi (not that it matters, just you can know the exact rig) 2.5 gpm that I bought used. Started a pressure washing business 3 weeks ago and now I think my pump is bad. To be fair, I’m pretty sure I was the one that messed it up. I always run water through it for two-3 mins until all the air is out. But until this occurred I didn’t know about keeping the handle engaged... I have a bunch of jobs to do in the next couple of days so I figure I’ll just buy a new one worse case, but I wanted to look into cheaper options like pump replacement or something. I’d rather save up for a 4.0 that I’ve been looking at. At the same time though... I have to have a rig to make the money. Suggestions??

You can change the pump on it easily. It going to be held on by 4 bolts and maybe an allen bolt to the crankshaft. It's about a 15 minute job. Your horsepower is going to limit you to around 2.5gpms and 3000ish PSI. A new replacement pump should cost you around $100-125 which may not be worth it?
