I’m so glad you did this video. I was planning on using these on the new layout and I definitely would have screwed some part of it up without your tutorial. Thank you.
Thanks for another interesting and informative video. Whether I decide to go this route or not, your videos are always chock-full of useful information, and well worth watching.
Love the trivia. I convert all my HO scale trains to Kadee and my N scale trains to Micro-Trains Line couplers. I like keeping all a standard brand to make sure everything works together.
Hi Larry, I watch every episode of what you do. I really enjoy it. I so hope, that when I can, I will build my own layout and if I can, I will strive to do it as well as you do. I am looking forward to do it as I have a fabulous encyclopaedia of how to do it at my hands. Thank you so much, all the best from the UK. great Video BTW.
Thanks for being a loyal viewer. You also might want to take a look at the uncoupler system offered by Peco. I need to check it out myself as I am not sure what couplers it works with.
Excellent video, thank you. I am looking forward to the next one on wiring but I would like to request yet another video. Would you be interested in explaining how you decide where to place the uncouplers? Maybe include an short operations example on where and why you select the locations for the uncouplers...
Was anyone else shouting "Mind your fingers, Larry" when he was cutting out the cork? 😀 Larry, I was struck by how many items you put back in the bag as you don't use them, and that you also mentioned that these Kadee electromagnets weren't cheap. I wondered if there were any alternative suppliers that weren't quite so bountiful (perhaps the word is wasteful) when it comes to bits you don't need, or whether you have ever tried to make your own electromagnetic uncoupler. Obviously the Kadee ones are nice and straightforward, and most layouts aren't going to need dozens of them, but is there something in particular about how the Kadee ones work that would be difficult to replicate?
Thanks again Larry, This is really great video, as it helps clears up the installation of the electromagnetic uncoupler. Just wondering, do you think this produces a more powerful magnetic field than the Kadee standard permanent uncoupler magnet, Kadee sells?
It seems to. However I suspect the strength of the magnetic field would be proportional to the voltage and amperage. I need to experiment sometime with installing the capacitors they include to see if they strengthen the field or merely help stabilize it.
@@TheDCCGuy I'm just wondering, if a strong enough magnetic field can be created, up to about 3/4" below the track. I'm probably pushing it here, but, in theory, the uncoupler, being mounted on the underside of the plywood, directly under the assigned uncoupling track. Perhaps we can use those capacitors in a voltage doubling ckt., Or another use of those super capacitors, ha..
You to a great service to the Model Railroading population. I have a question. I have seen several references to "TVS" diodes - on decoder Moter solder-pads, or at the DC side of the decoder rectifier, or other DC devices. My question: which Voltage rating should I use, same voltage or some voltage higher than the circuit voltage ?; Should I use Bidirectional or Unidirectional for DCC, my Quess would be Bidirectional ?; Also for DCC what voltage, same or some voltage higher? Thank you in advance, Bfm
Ben-there was a good article on these in the April 2022 MRH available free at their website. There also was an extensive discussion on the MRH forum at forum.mrhmag.com/post/shortproofing-dcc-decoders-12330253?highlight=protecting%20decoders&trail=25 which discussed this subject in considerable detail. These would be your best sources-Larry
Hi Larry, Are you handling those storms hitting the East Coast weather? I grew up in the D.C. area, Maryland suburbs, and I can’t ever remember the kind of weather that’s been hitting you. Didn’t you do an earlier video on magnets, on the British modular you built a couple years ago? How will this differ from that one? I plan to use these on the yard in my layout. Should these be used on industrial tracks?
I too grew up in Quantico which is on the Potomac River south of DC and most of my adult life I lived in Manassas. It was hot and hazy in the summers to be sure. Here in Western North Carolina our summers are moderated by the mountains. For example yesterday we got up to about 70 degrees and will only hit 84 today. We still haven’t gotten out of the 80s this summer. My daughter on the other hand moved ti Texas this year and is sweating out temps over 100 every day-I think she’s ready to move back! So far we have been lucky.
it sucks i am disabled now speeding gravel truck never stopped at his stop sign and t-bome my vehicle he was on his cell phone and had his seat laying down so he could not see the road that well my layer requested his cell bill he was on his phone at that time he denied it i have a dashcam to i did pick him not stopping at the stop sign too he was overweight to with his load the towtruck operator sized too they police did found drugs in his truck too he cry he was being Discrimination against but the judge did not see it his way he got 10 years with the other charges he had it was not his first accident too what i got from him i build a larger shop on a friend's farm that where the layout is at
