Confession time in my latest Marienburg Diary: not only has it been a little longer than planned since my last update, but I've also not made as much progress as I wanted!
Join me as I document my project to build a Marienburg inspired army for Warhammer Fantasy Battle and the upcoming Warhammer: The Old World. And not just that, I'm planning to use miniatures from every era of Citadel history!
This is L'Armee Trudot, the mercenary army recruited by Ponsard Trudot a young noble of a faded Imperial house.

Couldn’t agree more about not having a painting set up ready and waiting being an huge impediment- I quite enjoy painting (although am painfully slow!) but moved house last year and still haven’t got my paints all set up - every time I think about painting there is the barrier of having to get everything out and ready before I can get going- think I’ve only managed two painting sessions in the past year! Think you’re plan sounds great! Good luck and have fun! A good guy skaven is very awesome!

Painting has to become a ritual, fix yourself a tee/coffee, put on some music or audiobook, tidy up when done with the day. And as for painting a new army, start with a core unit to come to grips with the paint scheme. Then "reward" yourself with a charakter model. Take Turns with this through core, then elite, then rares. Hasn't failed me yet. Good luck and have fun painting ✌️

Great series! I had your same idea and started a few weeks ago my own conversion of a greenskin armies. The White Tuskers, a tribe of pale-skinned, nomadic orcs and goblins that inhabit the mountains of Mourn. They are famous for beast hunting and taming and are renown for their ambushes on caravans along the Ivory Road. For now I'm preparing a lot of kit bashing with ogre kits and random armaments from other factions. Loved the process so far! Looking forward to more episodes!

I have my paintstation set up next to my computer so i can watch paintint tutorials, battle reports or lets plays while i paint. Its always set up so i can paint 15 seconds just doing a single detail on a single model or 5 hours and finish a few of them.

I'm really enjoying your videos and believe me the struggle to get yourself to paint or create is real. What helps me is not thinking. I think a big thing holding you back is the pressure you've put on yourself with this project. The fact that it's your favourite faction, you're using all these old minis and theres a pressure to make that live up to your ideal fantasy of what the army would look like. The best way to break that fear and diminish it is to be specific in your painting diary. Don't just say "I'm going to paint for two hours on Wednesday" say "I'm going to prime my models on Wednesday." Then the next day can be base coats for pants or tunics etc. And honestly don't worry about colours and making everything work. Use as many shades of blue and white and gold and whatever else you want. A unifying wash colour be it oils or acrylic and the same basing can tie the army together. Even if each colour of mini is different they will still be tied together. Thinking about how you're gonna paint this army will be detrimental to getting started. Trust me. Don't think, just paint. And if you're not happy with something you painted, strip it and paint it again. Don't put pressure on yourself my dude. This army will look amazing when it's done regardless because it will be done. Not thinking in my art and my hobby has saved me because every session is fun and my Mish mashed mercenary army looks unified because they have the same wash colour and the same bases! Loved the video and good luck lahd!

I certainly recognize that mental barrier towards painting from a lack of a fixed setup. What has helped somewhat for me is investing in a (not very fancy) mobile painting station (specifically the Project Paint Station from Army Painter). It can hold a number of brushes, a water cup, and enough paint for most projects. This means I can prep a project by removing and adding paints to that station. And then I can pretty much just plop it down on a table and I'm ready to paint. And then stow it away on a shelf somewhere when it's not in use. Even then, a lot of the time, I find the first "painting" session of a new project is just simply prepping the station. Because it really is a barrrier for me to get started. So the first session is I think about what colours I want to use on the next model(s) I'm painting, put them on the painting station. And usually call it at that for the first day. Sometimes I'll touch up on the basecoat, because that's such a low bar I can usually force myself to do that at least :)

Having a dedicated space is definitely a huge help in actually getting stuff painted. When I first got into the hobby I never had such a space and as an early teen firing up a video game or grabbing a book or some LEGO was always way easier than getting all my stuff ready for painting. Having gotten back into it during COVID with not that much more desk space I decided to get a simple foldup table and it's been such a help to sit down and paint - most of the stuff I need I have ready, I just need to grab the actual paints and minis (that are always within reach anyway) and I can get going (and even then I still have evenings where I told myself I'd paint but still end up playing video games or something). Looking forward to see more of the project as it comes along, especially as a Dutchman, and I'd be lying if I said this series hasn't tempted me to try and pick up a unit of old empire models and paint them up in schemes inspired by Dutch cities.

Jordan, as a hobbyist with ADHD, what you described is one of many struggles with the hobby. I tried setting times and dates and getting everything ready etc but I found that I just moved the excuse over to failing to get ready, which meant that I had a fresh reason to not paint. The thing that really helped me, was getting my friends involved. Group painting sessions, or telling them via our WhatsApp group, what I wanted to work on that night, got them to motivate me, as they would ask to see my progress regularly. It's been many years now and our WhatsApp group is such a lovely place of friendly encouragement and pics of great looking miniatures. Best of luck!

I have ADD and my mind works the same. If stuff is not right in front of me I have immense trouble starting. This is why I have a dedicated painting desk and a dedicated desk for my modular synthesizers. Without it I just won't use them, even though I love it. Also, every thing has to have its place to live, else it'll float around wherever to great annoyance of me until I lose it, to even greater annoyance when I actually need it. Getting the chest with painting supplies is a great idea. Everything has it's place to live, planning your time and laying out your stuff before hand is great too. This way, the task is not "painting", which you cannot do because you haven't got your supplies out, but your task is: "getting painting supplies out". Removing barriers as much as you can really works.

I know the feeling to get started with painting a new army. The best thing I thingk is to start with one miniature, and after that one think what can you do to make the next one faster and more easy to paint. And contrast paint is the best thing that I have bought. Saves me so much time and it makes shades and highlights so much better than painting it by hand. Keep upp the good work!

I've done the same thing with resin minis in paint stripper - I just wasn't aware that it might happen. It was recoverable in my case, but it took a LONG time to dry out. Leave it on a shelf somewhere with good ventilation, with something underneath. You might be able to use silica gel (or rice) to accelerate the drying, but given enough time, it should be ok.

"Talent" is basically irrelevant once you get going. Painting is a skill you train. Whatever level you start from, developing that skill is all down to patience, study, experimentation and lots and lots and lots of practice. If you want to get good at painting the only way to do that is to paint. It helps to know how. It helps to understand art, it helps to have started practicing 20 years ago! But if you just keep at it, you'll be amazed how quickly you learn and improve! So just try it, and try not to give up!

I get the same with painting. Ive always found i procrastinate the most when i have most to do. So i now keep almost zero expectations on my painting and so whenever i do want to paint, i just pic a model, pic a small section or colour and thats it. If i paint all the red on a boltgun, im happy and i can either carry on or call it a day. If at some point during a model o want to paint something else, i paint something else. Maybe try just picking one model for your army and just have a goal to paint that one guy. Leave the army for later, it will come by itself.

As so many others have said in the comments; back when I painted the hardest part wasn't the painting, it was starting the painting. What got me past my block was doing it socially, going over to a friend's house and painting minis together. It helped, we could bounce color schemes off each other, figure out different techniques together and whatever else. But I think your way would work just as well, Jordan, just setting aside the time and having it marked in your calendar. You'll get past that block without question. And as always I love the lore updates on your army. The backstory to everything makes it extra special. And I'm very much in support of a good and honorable skaven!
@McFordWilliam

Great update, you have a phantastic lore for your army. The Warhammer world is huge, so much is possible, even a good skaven. I know the problem painting miniatures, so I have my paintstaion alwyas set up, I just need to fill in water for the brushes and I can start paintin immediately. I wrote a to do list for every unit, so I know when to paint which colour. That's great, you have the Marauder giant, thank you very much Jason. I'm also glad Martha didn't told us about the new project.
@BrendanSparrow

I've been painting since 6th edition and can say the perfect setup is a model in one hand and a brush in the other. It's really that simple! The procrastination goblins in your brain telling you otherwise are wrong and need a stompin'. You have a great selection of minis, certainly enough to get the army started, and the lore behind them is excellent but just focus your attention on the act of painting them. You'll have plenty of time to think about everything else while your brush is moving. To get started, I like to pick a unit to batch paint and write a list of the general paint job I'm planning and the paints needed (skin, cloth, leather, fur, boots, cloaks, hair, wood, bone, metals etc). Usually, the exact paints, and even the order you use them, won't be finalised until you've actually started trying them out on a tester model or two. Once that's done, you'll have a step-by-step guide in front of you that can be crossed off as you paint, and it really is a good feeling.

I use a decent sized (18"x13") wooden tray to lay out all of my core paints, wet palette, brushes permanently. I can then move the tray out of the way at the drop of a hat or put it in different rooms even to just crack on whenever I get time. I do have to cycle paints sometimes, but 95% of the time everything I need fits.

As there are a lot of comments about the trepiditation of starting, I think you’ll see it is a feeling most of us share. Even the “there isn’t a dedicated space” thing. Super valid, super common. Great that you are getting positive toned help from friends, and trying solutions to overcome them. For me 15 years ago it was a chore as well, similar reasons (and also i was in high school). But when I came back this year, it is different. Even though many of the aspects stayed the same; I guess, I changed. And for me speed paints are a thing now. Still I paint slow, and it is not faster. It is a different game and all; but this time I truly enjoy painting them. Why I am saying this? If you are not enjoying that part of the hobby, just don’t do it. Do what you are inspired. Do more lore, do more kitbashing. No one cares if you get them painted by someone else. We don’t need gatekeepers, we need those gates to be opened. You might say “I care”; well, don’t. If you are not inspired, use your other resources to stay inspired. Who cares if you did it all by yourself, or just %80 of it. Who cares if you promised your patrons or yourself, things change. Did you sculpt the miniatures? Maybe you don’t need to paint either. Don’t worry you’ll paint your next one if you are inspired. If you are not maybe the third one. While the other Jordan is stuck in limbo with is partially painted unhappy army, this one will have more than one greatly painted ones.

The reason why I do this hobby is the painting. I don't play the games (apart from Heroquest, Warhammer Quest, Mordheim and Full Tilt!), I collect to paint and I take a long time over each mini I do. That said, even I get this psychological blockage too! I'm in work all day, looking forward to getting home and doing some painting. Then when I sit down to do it, sometimes I just can't start. It happens! Part of the problem here might be that you are doing this publically. But remember - you don't have to show us everything you paint! If you aren't happy with something, strip it and try again. You are already a RU-vid legend in my books, you can do it!

This sounds very familiar to me. I have ADHD and it can be a real struggle to get started on a painting project if it's not what my mind is hyper-focused on at the time. What you have suggested (setting up a dedicated painting space) sounds like a really good idea and I can see that working out very well. Just the knowledge that the space is there can be a motivating factor and you'll probably find that you've got far into a paint scheme without realising it, ready for table-top. I know that I often need that motivating factor, whatever it might be. I painted a Cawdor gang in two nights, ready for an event the next day and I've had a Dark Elf Blood Bowl team sitting unpainted since they were first released about 6-7 years ago that I just couldn't get started on. I decided to give them to a friend (who plays but doesn't paint) as a present and got them painted within a week. Good luck with the painting station! 💜

I have found what helped me: some sort of permanent painting setup. Some place I just have to sit down to paint, everything laid out already. The next closest thing would be some tray with everything on it: you could store it in easy reach and put it on your table when needed, then take it back when done. The "psychological struggle" of painting itself will stillbe there, but this way you at least make it as easy as possible. Another thing that got me into regular painting was the goal of "paint SOMETHING each day, no matter what". Could be as easy as a wash on some goblin coat, or the metal on five dudes swords - or three hours of painting while listening to podcasts and whatnot. Again: make it as easy as possible, just make it a regular habit. And of course, as always... yeah, this sounds oh-so-easy, you "just have to do it". The sad - but also actually good! - thing is it really is nothing more than that.

After a long day at work if your low on enthusiasm its difficult to motivate your self to unbox!! My best piece of advice for getting painting is not to put any expectations on yourself. In my experience if you start thinking in terms of "having" to make a certain amount of progress in a painting session then it's dangerously easy to persuade yourself that you'll fail to achieve your goals, and that leads to you not even trying. Instead try to think in terms of "I'll do just this one simple task", such as painting the base coat for a model's boots, or sword. Anything that gets you sitting at your painting desk. Once you're there you'll be much more inclined to stay there and do one more thing once your first goal is achieved, then another, then another... I am fortunate enough to have a permanently set up painting desk and that too is very useful in reducing the psychological feeling that doing some painting will be a lot of effort. Reducing that perception of effort is probably an important piece of making painting easier to approach. Your painting toolbox looks like it'll help a lot with that too!

My painting situation is very similar, the one place i have that is acceptable, spacious enough and usable ofr painting is my dining table in the kitchen. I don't have a permanent place tucked away to paint at, and this means that when im painting i usually have my little girl also wanting to paint too, which involves a small logistics programme of getting out her bits, and spreading a giant sheet everywhere to protect the table, the floor and her clothes from her own painting skills. One day i might get a space, but at least for now im never on my lonesome when painting. Unless i was peace and quiet, in which ill paint when everyone has gone to bed. But i think very few people have dedicated painting stations. Painting is something that can be fun and enjoyable, the trick is finding a style that suites you.

There is a barrier to painting I agree, but once you start it's not that hard to keep it going from one day to the next. And once you see your progress over time you'll become more confident in your ability. I've found it useful to leave all the necessary paints and objects left out in the open. It's one less step to think about in order to push myself to do it. Just leaving all the things lying around is a good way to mentally slide in and out of the "painting" mindset. You don't even need to paint your models, you can paint pictures or do some drawings to begin with. Just the related activity will help

Dude, I live on a boat. My “dedicated hobby space” is the Frontier Paint case. You just need a system that lets you set up and pack away quick. The one thing I will advise is to try to put paint on your brush every day. Even if you just basecoat one colour on one mini, do some every day. I did that earlier and it’s now 4 hours later and I’ve finished the mini.

Having a dedicated space to paint, or the ability to quickly set up; is a real boon to getting stuff done. Little and often is key. Try to paint for 30mins even if you don't feel like it. You'll often find once you get to 30mins you carry on. And even if you don't, you still got 30mins in. I love painting, but I didn't always. Painting was very much an obstacle to gaming when I was young. But now it pretty much is the hobby for me. You'll get there.

I've painted model cars and planes before, hoping painting minis isn't too different from that. I was looking at AoS and 40K but I figure I can afford to support one game, and I love the Bretonnian classic knight aesthetic. I've liked the art and style of all Warhammer games but I think this is gonna be the winner for me. Not that I might not buy some Orks in the meantime to practice painting on...

Beating inertia is one of the biggest factor to achieve things, especially if it is something that is not particularly attractive or something that it feels like a chore. Having a dedicated painting space is a huge deal to make thing get done. It was a big topic in the panting community some years ago. It was hindering me and I love to paint, but the barrier of taking all out, cleaning my regular desk, setting up the panting station, and the at the end reversing everything... is desmotivational at best.

Sturdy tray, with miniatures and paints etc needed for those miniatures. This can be conveyed to any table. I had a friend with the issue, changed his painting life. Watch boots on the table another gamer and non painter who may have good advice. Good luck with a great project.

Just paint your goddamn minis, man!!! In the time it took you to make this video... You could have painted a horde! ;) It's very hard to get a lot of painting done if you don't have a permanent painting spot. Setting up and packing everything away each time slows everything thing down. After 6 years of working this way I now have a permanent spot. My wife left me, I lost my job and I'm back home with my folks:( Nah, we just moved to a bigger place and now I'm really excited to see how much more I can get done:) love your channel:)

Thanks for the vid! It's good to be honest about our hobby, and we've all got our hangups. Personally, I'm bad for starting a whole bunch of minis and just not finishing them. My necron army is a mix of fully painted models, down to barely assembled ones. I'm real excited to see how your army progresses though! Have you reached out at all to Midwinter Minis? I know he's mostly a 40k Guy ;) but it would be sick to see you both on a video. Do you prefer the 7th edition rules over 6th? At first 7th appealed more to me, but it seems the general zeitgeist of oldhammer is that 6th is superior, though I have yet to play a game of either. I'd be interested to hear your opinion. I've also found it easier to get a hold of the 7th edition army books, so that's also influencing my preference, I admit.

Spray models brown, drybrush khaki, fine drybrush white, drybrush two primary colours on tunics, paint skin and cap feathers, drybrush metal bits, give it a brown wash, you're done.

So, after revisiting this video again, I am actually starting to like the idea of making a short story related to L'Armee, but taking place inside my roleplay campaign. Any chance I could get the names so that I can spell them correctly? Not sure Zebestrin Voban is the correct spelling.

I'm hoping to release a bit of a themed army list document at some point, but for now: Zebastrin Vohhban the dwarf engineer, Corbel Raton his Skaven apprentice, Ponsard Trudot the young noble, Reinauld the loyal retainer and captain of the Trudot Vinekeepers, Flint Barracrackk the Dwarf mercenary, Glug Haffkut the ogre leader of the Five Sided Coin, Amelia Latchkey the captain of the Sabre Salit, Betrand Von Micklestien the shady wizard, and Marionna Liste the Kislevite vodka smuggler.

You’re issue is exactly the same as my own and many of the people in my hobby group, we have a WhatsApp group where we share progress and try and motivate each other. Not having a bespoke painting space is a big hurdle but can be overcome and there are some great suggestions here to help. But rest assured you are not the only one with this issue, we’ve all been there 😏

Most of warhammer players have a dream, they buy buy, and then nothing really happens… At most, it gets assembled, coated, but ends as such on ebay or else. They had a dream, and remained a dream :) i hope your investment in the hobby will take you in the very few that turn this into reality, and a game one day with a fully painted army. But that’s 1 in a 1000 ! Where will you be 😊 Besides, TOW will most probably get released in February 2024 and as i see it, you won’t be able to play your army unless going back to V6.. at best it will be a nice collection to contemplate but no chance to play

I would make 1 suggestion and it's what I tend to. Do not purchase anymore models and probably do not assemble anymore models you already have. It's nice to buy models and add them but when you clearly have big procrastinating issues around painting them and adding more and more to the pile would only make it worse. Just start painting, pick your colour scheme and start. There is no "wrong" way to paint a model. Your first models will be what they are but you will learn and get better and you will see the progress with each model. It will become quicker as you go too. We all start somewhere and it takes practice.

I must confess… painting is my least favorite part of the hobby as well. I love building, collecting, reading lore and playing games. But painting feels like work and is daunting. I feel your pain.

Most people build their personal space around their hobby bench, especially considering it's a miniatures game that requires model building and painting. Nothing wrong with being passionate about other aspects of the hobby, and it shouldn't be a chore to get set up with brush in hand. Maybe you just need to give yourself a break and accept you're just not into the hobby side of miniatures gaming. Nothing wrong with it, I have friends who purchase their armies painted...
