I would love to hear Chris’s take if the coach who made this call was not called Kyle Shanahan. As an analyst you need to be blind to personalities and focused on situations. He seems to always have a problem here with the Niners/Kyle. I’m a Niners fan but this was inexcusable on Kyle. If Andy and Spags are drilling OT rules into the Chiefs players heads there’s probably a good bet that it’s important.

At the same time, the players not all knowing wasn't a difference maker. The decision was. And I'll defend Shanahan, because there's an alternate universe where he gives KC the ball first and they rapidly score on an exhausted 49ers defense, then a rested Chiefs defense pins their ears back and stops the 49ers. Then everyone is hating on Shanahan for not resting his defense. And there's another world where the chiefs are held to a field goal and the 49ers get the ball third and Kyle looks like a genius. Everyone is more sure of their opinion a week later with the benefit of hindsight. Kyle had to make that choice in the moment. And of course, Andy Reid deserves credit for having prepared for this situation all year, but he also went to overtime in the AFC championship 3 years in a row, so maybe it's less that he's a genius and more that he too has the benefit of hindsight

I'm pretty sure the analytics thing was just a cop out. I'm gonna struggle to believe analytics would tell you to take the ball first, unless the sample size includes all of the overtimes before the rule change. Also, analytics shouldn't make all of your decisions for you, it's a tool, that you as a NFL head football coach, should be able to discern whether or not the result of analytics makes logical sense in the moment.

I don't understand all the angst about analytics or taking the ball first or not. The real mistake was having the ball inside the Chiefs 9 yard line on 4th and 4 and not going for it. Andy Reid hammered the ot rules into his players for a reason. And Shanahan told the players to take the ball first , so even if the players did know the rules it doesn't matter. It was Kyle's decision & he told the players to receive . Hardman didn't even realize they won the game when he caught the touchdown. Your a casual fan so of course you would know the ot rules because your sitting on your phone & can look them up. The game was lost at the 2min warning when it was 3rd an 5. Even 2nd and 5....team is running the ball, chiefs are gassing and instead of running the ball you try two basic pass plays. At that point in the game, you need that first down as if it's the game, because it is! A first equals a last second FG (or close enough) and thus Mahones has no time to get anymore points. SF's Defense did great for 3.5 Qtr, but at the point the game they are not stopping KC, few if any teams do. Andy reed has great plays when it comes down to must have and apparently Kyle doesn't.

KC said they would've gone for 2 if it were a tied game at the end of their OT possession. Also, what if you're playing the Detroit Lions? You know 100% Dan Campbell would go for 2. Do you just ignore that and go with analytics? But the real question is this: did Kyle even know the rules? Some of his players thought a TD won the game. Did he know that to be false? Or did he maybe know the rule but forgot in the moment and told Warner to take the ball if they win the toss out of confusion or instinct from past years?

I've been waiting to put this out there I've been a niners fan from the 80s so I'm a little biased so bare with me I've been hearing everybody's opinions and nobody is right or wrong so here's my take!! It's a long one😂 I think the coach should take a lot of the blame if they lose but the problem is he blames Jimmy g, but he's gone, he blames trey lance well he's gone he blamed Steve Wilkes well he is now gone!! Wilkes wasn't my favorite dc I liked demeco, but here's what I saw in the Superbowl the first was the fumble by CMC, can't make any mistakes in the Superbowl, but it didn't cost them, the defense played good for most of the game but at the end that prevent zone defense had a lot of holes and people were left open, there should maybe have been a spy on mahones on D, the next the offense sputtering in basically a lot of the game was do to shanahan bad play calling and not using his playmakers when it mattered most!! He seems to throw instead of run at the biggest games at the wrong time!! He's made this mistake over and over but thinks he's never wrong big flaw in his character!! And yes he can win games in regular season and he's won a couple NFC championships but in Superbowls he's never won once!! He has an all star team or some say the avengers😂 yet can't seem to manage a game properly specifically a Superbowl game the last 4 years and if you want to add OC with falcons in that Superbowl!!, I think he's probably an OC but they need a coach who knows how to win the big one and maybe demote him to OC!!! He hasn't really learned from his mistakes thus he doesn't think he makes mistakes so there is in lies the problem he will never improve because he never looks in the mirror and says it was on him!!!! Sorry back to the Superbowl they didn't get any points on those turnovers but shanny blames the defense but no that is on his offense!! It looks like some of the players are sick of his antics (aiyuk) and maybe others in that locker room, sadly this might be the last shot with such talent but under achieve!! The 49ers make changes in players and yet still haven't won but the coach is still there making the same mistakes in the Superbowl, and yes I know it's hard to win the Superbowl but when we used to win 5 and score 55 points in 2 different Superbowls and now we've lost 3 bill Walsh was way better at controlling the whole team and shanahan is not and when will the special teams learn to block a field goal or punt I can't remember seeing that lately!! And others say well they went up against mahones and Reid, but they've been beaten in a Superbowl before if I'm not mistaken just checked and it was the Patriots with Brady who we should have gotten when we had the chance yet another blunder by the niners😢 anyway I've ranted enough hopefully you enjoyed my rant if not sorry I can't make everyone happy😂 C YA and go niners!!

AND Greenlaw was out. You expect your defense to win the game against Mahomes without arguably your best defender. You lose that battle 10/10 times.

Bottom line.. the game was lost after halftime... Chiefs start with the ball. Mahomes throws a pick . Brock gets the next 8 out of 9 plays to pass . 3 and out all 3 series.. usher left him the stage just to lay an egg..

Who’s fault?.. AWS is the analytics service for the NFL, Bezos owns Amazon, Amazon is in Seattle, Seattle Seahawks, Marshawn Lynch, also born, raised, and played in Oakland, Oakland Raiders, both teams rival 49ers, Las Vegas Raiders, host of SuperBowl 58. Marshawn cussing out 49er fans in casino, casino always wins..

Shanahan is the most overrated coach in the game. His blocking schemes kill him in every big game. Last years NFC Championship Game, he got Purdy killed. This year, he didn’t block Chris Jones on 3rd down. Dude sucks.

Dude that makes no sense Look at the Falcons back in 2016 Super Bowl, they got completely gassed out in the end and then having to go straight back in when OT came. They had absolutely nothing left in the tank when overtime came. Yes they should have ran the bowl and Shannahan blew it but saying players can “step to the challenge” when you’ve been out there all game, take a shower, hit the weights and get a clue my dude.

Shanahan has said multiple times that he makes all the decisions on the field himself. Florio tries so hard to campaign that they wormed their way into all football operations / made coaches retarded when its the coaches like shanahan that suck at making the decisions or game planning the big games. Or the regular games if its like a staley kinduva coach. Kind of telling when he seems more angry at a department than the head guy making all the decisions

@tylerholt6828 no because according to Shanahan they were already expecting the chiefs to score, expecting a third possession. So how would they be crushed if the chiefs scored if it was expected? Bottom line Shanahan is an idiot and you never give Mahomes the second possession lmao.

@tylerholt6828 no, no, no Tyler! Wth are you not getting?!. Kyle is a choke artist did you not hear the kelce's talk about this same situation on their podcast? 9ers were gassed chiefs were gased to. But they was prepared goddammit Tyler knock it off. Do not give Mahomes the second possession!!!! Play to win, run the ball twice since you took the ball first to do what??? WIN!

Analytics works. Every successful modern company uses analytics. Obviously it has worked for him to an extent. And that extent is human nature. Take all the babbling out of this conversation and that is what it boils down to. Your analytics will only take you so far till you run into a Patrick Mahomes and you throw out your "analytics" and you go with your gut.

😂 Every tight game, little mistakes, become critical later. The blocked extra point n fumbles all change the game. Missed block, bad decisions by player or coaches in hindsight. Hard to blame one thing. Its really a combination of mistakes. Bills QB went for TD instead of first down, missed, had to kick, missed, gave ball back to Mahomes. Ravens gave up running, had Lamar pocket pass when he's best at run or pass option. Missed opportunities, makes the game what it is. Its much more enjoyable to watch a close game, than to see a blowout. Though, wished for a Niner blow out. Mahomes wasn't great in game, but did enough at critical moments. Heartbreaking loss for Niners fans. 3 SB losses. 2 SB losses under Kyle. Another Levy (Bills Levy/Kelly), 4 SB losses. Its hard to climb the mountain again Niners SB window might be closing?

This really is being made a bigger deal than it truly is. Kyle’s thinking is correct that if you both score you have the first sudden death possession. If he elected the other way he would’ve been killed for allowing mahomes to have that possession. The problem the 49ers had was they didn’t score a td. I will say though his team not knowing the rules is an absolute embarrassment on not only him but the players too. While he shouldve told the players in a meeting during the week and went over for sure, idk how the players didn’t know it already. Everyone watching from their couch knew and it’s been a thing for a few years now so they clearly haven’t been paying attention. And mike is making a ton of assumptions and accusations without any evidence to really back them up. He has no idea what goes on in their building. Also chris is too close to this to give any sort of sober analysis.

Classic Monday morning quarterbacking. You’re making this OT decision more than it deserves. Because if they kicked the ball and it went to a third possession, you would be screaming about how SF allowed Mahomes to have the ball twice in OT.
