The most essential question for farmers and gardeners to ask about their soil is, "Is it alive?" We will explore the diverse microorganism communities present in soil and why it is so important to keep them thriving and in balance. Meredith Leigh will explain the importance of a dynamic soil food web. View multiple different local participant samples and apply that information on your own farm or garden to build your own soil enriching strategies.

Truly excellent. I am a beginner with compost tea, microbiology and sustainable agriculture. Having read books, articles and watched about 30 hours of videos (including Dr Elaine Ingham), you can believe me when I say this is, by far, the best education on the subject to date. It is informative, thorough, simple, and covers all the first time requirement and beyond that will be encountered and need to be understood. Sorry to go on, but the filming and sound are also very well put together. The slides are especially illuminating too. Thanks, for your efforts and sharing. Very, very much appreciated. My interest in this is that I am trying a new approach for for my roses, in pots, in the tropics, on my roof garden, in one of the most polluted capital cities in the world, (so a few challenges to overcome). Im a reasonably experienced gardener, (in UK), but roses here (in the entire city) are rare (i have seen zero, anywhere). My 2 attempts, with intensive (traditional) care have resulted in decaying health and slow dying of all of my 90, then 70 rose plants, after their initial flourish for 3-6 months. I still have high hopes of another bash, re-invigorated, with the compost tea/microbes approach, and armed with my new microscope.

Except she does not have the qualifications to be a high-level instructor in universities. Taking an online course does not make one a professor. That requires an actual doctorates degree. How did you find a good microscope? I've been looking and i can't really find exactly what Mrs. Ingham said. She said it had to be "Shadowing or Diferencial Interference Contrast as opposed to Phase Contrast" Dic is hard to find and when i do find it, it's really expensive. Do you know what she means when she sais "shadowing"? Is it darkfield? I dont think it is

I'm absolutely enthused by this approach to agriculture - what an outstanding paradigm shift in understanding. But, although I'm familiar with microscopes (micropetrology - rock mineralogy studies) the cost of a suitable microscope does give me something to think on. So, I'm wondering if there are any reliable macroscopic indicators that will help navigate compost management? Now I'm going to read the other comments and responses 🙂

Regarding turning compost too much- The Johnson-Su Composting Bioreactor may be a solution. To do it properly, worms are added to finish. The compost tends to be fungi dominated. Of course if you choose to then make compost extract for tea, the bubbling will shred fungal strands. There must be a happy medium in terms of bubble size which allows you to extract biology without shredding it to bits. Seems most tea makers prefer vigorous bubbling to extract as much biology as possible. I suspect that might not be the best approach. Anyone have any insight on bubble size & the time factor for extraction?

If you are raising your worms in a bedding with a mix of local leaf mould for example, you can be faily well assured you have captured funi indigenous to your area that will easily thrive & be beneficial.

I cannot get my local Master Gardeners from my Extension office to understand this. They kept dismissing compost tea as a hoax and insisted on soil samples sent to the state university that does not address these things. I care more about the life in soil than some arbitrary NPK numbers. We need more science being taught at that level. When I mentioned Dr Elaine Ingham they never heard of her and could care less. They regurgitated their pamphlet literature and cited their own failed field studies which they wouldn't admit had no controls nor examination of compost or compost tea or soil under the microscope.

That is typical in cult groups where any dissent is seen as a personal slight and grave threat to their identity. Mostly found in extremist groups, such as progressives and socialist camps. Primarily what drove the chaos and destruction we saw in America in 2020. A very concerning trend among young people venturing into management positions who's delusions fuel their outrage and abbhorent behavior. Take what fruits their information provides and leave the chaff of their politics on the ground, where they belong.
