Join us on the journey this week, as we see if our RV will survive freezing up. Also, as we hit the road again in freezing temps, we take some steps to prevent freezing again. Angela gets resolution on the broken fridge shelf, but not without some issues along the way. Enjoy!

Whats not to love about a steel guitar, twin fiddles and a walking bass? Got the chance a couple of years ago to catch the Bob Wills museum in the old high school in Turkey Texas. Quite the history. His old tour bus is next to the oldest Phillips 66 station in Texas. That whole area has a ton of Texas History. Hotel Turkey has an amazing Sunday brunch/lunch. The Cap Rock State park has a herd of bison descendants of the Charles Goodnight herd. Then there is the Bob Wills Days the end of April.

I would like to see the RV industry move to LEXAN shelving for all RV fridges. That stuff just doesn't break. It can scratch but you could always use 2,000 grit sandpaper to polish out the scratches if that happens. Our aluminum cookware has glass lids, and we use those bubble wrap envelopes that Amazon ships products to us to wrap them in when traveling. We also wrap the microwave turntable in one as well. So far, we have not had anything glass break.
@RVUntethered
@RVUntethered 7 месяцев назад
Bubble wrap is a great idea! That lexan was super expensive! If it’s that hardy though, it’s a nice thought throughout the rig!

Glad you enjoyed FTW and survived the cold. We are at Silver Creek RV just about 15 minutes from where you stayed. I recommend this park, they have live music and food at the bar and it’s on a quiet dead end road. Easy access for big rigs, we are 42’. Let us know if you are back through the area, we’d love to have a beer together at the bar!

I have the same problem with going down the road. We have a fifth wheel and a residential fridge in the rear. First long trip down the road, even though i thought i secured everything in the fridge, it looked like everything in there went through a hurricane. Most glass stuff was shattered and a couple the plastic shelves cracked. What a mess.

Right at the end of your video the clue for why broken glass, fridge and dish, became evident. It is because those items are located at the very back of your 5th wheel. Going down the road is MUCH bumpier back there than from the axles forward. And for sure the very back feels more bumps than the cab of your truck. Maybe move breakables forward into a different cabinet. ???
@RVUntethered
@RVUntethered 7 месяцев назад
I have heard others say that their rear fridges take a lot of damage. I’m hoping my plastic insert shelves add a little buffer and hold that stuff in place. 😬 Moving the glass is a good idea though! My cabinets in the center of the rig, really don’t move.

You should move that apple cider vinegar into that plastic container or lower down because when you travel it will bounce up and down on your other shelf. Of course you know where to get a new one if it breaks.

Yes, I’m afraid that could have been the culprit. I think the plastic shelving inserts will help a little. In theory, it should give it a buffer. 😬

We may not drop it until we get into warmer weather and in an area where we can work on our RV. There isn’t much too it, aside from unbolting some things. The problem is that often times, it doesn’t go back up the way the came down (or at least in our previous experience), so we want to put it off as long as possible. 😆 We did cut a hole in it (in an upcoming video and we aren’t seeing any leaks, nor do we see any insulation on the backside. 🤷‍♀️ Who knows!

That’s a tough question! Charlie was so easy as a puppy and has always traveled well. He is a bit clingy, so for us all to be together, he’s happy. Ha! Eris, has been a tough one. She was beating up on her siblings before we got her. Ha! She barks a LOT! She has come a long ways, but she is a VERY strong personality. She’s very loving, but outsiders wouldn’t know it. We shut windows so she doesn’t see something to cause her to bark, when we are away from the camper. They do pretty good by themselves. I keep hearing that the color makes a big difference on their personalities. Black and tan..so I’ve heard a few times..is a stronger personality. Red and blonde are supposedly easier. Good luck on your hunt! I’m sorry to hear that you lost your dog. That’s hard!

More than likely your fresh water tank did not freeze up, especially the fact your bathroom faucets worked. We have had 3 experiences where our kitchen did not have water. Apparently there is a location that is exposed to freezing. We also have a reflection. Did have one occasion where for 3 days nothing worked. Never resulted in damage. I do think there is a concer of freezing leaving the island cabinet doors open helps.

I believe you are correct. We cut a small hole in the under belly (upcoming video) and didn’t see any leaks or issues. In fact it was dusty, so it was a good sign. However, we didn’t have insulation on that end of the rig, which we found odd. I am wondering if that is normal?

We are on the cusp of purchasing a 2024 Reflection 337RLS and are pervious about the frame issues and the fact you froze up when you shouldn't of. Have you any any issues your willing to share? We are not full-time and will use it 10-15 trips per year. We would love to use in late fall when the nights are cold and Grand Design advertises their Arctic 4-Seasons Protection Package that appears isn't very good.

We have camped in negative temps before, with no issues. We really feel that it was either the fierce, cold wind, or something wrong under the underbelly. We won’t drop the underbelly right now, but we did cut a hole in it (in an upcoming video) and saw that there wasn’t any insulation on the back end. I’m not sure if that was the culprit, but it may have helped, since we only froze on one side.

We were just North of you in Denton, TX for that cold snap. I think we freeze up the island due to the lines are literally laying on the trailer chloroplast, no amout of furnace heat will keep it from freezing. Supposed you froze the tank, I wonder if you only froze the line from the fresh tank. It would take a LONG cold snap to freeze the contents of a full tank.
@RVUntethered

@RVUntethered
@RVUntethered 7 месяцев назад
Texas isn’t as safe from winter weather as the more Southern states (excluding the most Southern portion of Texas of course). But we had an ice storm in Austin last year, during February, which I think is rare. The weather we saw in Fort Worth in Jan, is not uncommon, according to the locals. It may not be long-lived, but I would be prepared for it. The livestock show is worth every penny, which runs about three weeks in January, so we of course would recommend that time period. You just may need to pack warm clothes!

It’s not a bad idea. I know there is a definite correlation to the weather and the efficiency of the tanks. We look at those “winter prep” items and say we won’t be in the cold..but we know we will. It has been more of being cheap than anything.

Yes, the tank heaters were on the entire time. Now, we’re assuming that they are still working, so that gets tricky. But we have camped in cooler temps. It sounds like it may be a different style. Ours doesn’t have high or low options. Just an up and down arrow and a small range of temps to choose from. I would be careful with that in freezing temps, where it may trick your propane furnace into not kicking on.
