The only reason you probably don’t hear about BMO as often as Vanguard or iShares is because … well, investors just don’t ask us about them as often.
Today, let’s turn this popularity contest into a proper review. To keep things simple, we’ll compare BMO’s asset allocation ETFs to the iShares Core ETF portfolios.
Please feel free to download the model portfolios from my blog before getting started:

ZEQT has started adding small cap stocks, but are holding them separately. So instead of having a total US market ETF, they have the S&P500 etf, a US mid cap etf, and a US small cap ETF.

Very helpful, Justin. This video was an important part of the research I used to decide to use BMO etfs for my portfolio.

Good video, Justin! I've always been inclined to favour the BMO asset allocation ETFs, both in terms of portfolio composition but also because I tend to favour the underdog in AUM (although, yes, I realize BMO is larger than Vanguard Canada in total AUM). I didn't know VGRO had its own sub-reddit, though!

@Doug Mehus - Thanks, Doug! I'm glad to hear you've been enjoying the videos :) BMO's asset allocation ETFs were certainly outshined by the Vanguard and iShares products, but there weren't many good reasons for this.

Great video, ZEQT looks interesting. You said not to worry about the low volume because of the underlying holdings

Thanks, if possible can you please review HCON and HBAL and try to compare with Vanguard series. I learned Horizons offerings are tax efficient for non-registered investment. Any quick comments on HBAL are highly appreciated. Happy new year🎇

@Ray Making - Happy new year! I plan to review some of the Horizon's tax-efficient ETFs at some point in the future. As a quick comment, I prefer the plain-vanilla index ETFs from iShares, BMO and Vanguard over ETFs that have counterparty risk (like those from Horizons).

Love your video and detailed explanation. I do have a question. When looking at your model portfolios.. The iShared model lists funds which inder CAD hedged, yet the stock symbols are for US funds. Example: USIG, GOVT, ITOT. What are the CAD Hedged versions? Trying to mapby names is not always working. THanks
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 6 месяцев назад
@tonydibratto5333 - Great question! The iShares Core ETF Portfolios hold the unhedged U.S.-listed bond ETFs (i.e., USIG and GOVT), but then hedge away their USD exposure behind the scenes. So there isn't technically a CAD-hedged version of USIG or GOVT. ITOT is a U.S.-based ETF, and iShares does not hedge away its USD exposure within the iShares Core ETF Portfolios.

With regards to these BMO ETFs like ZEQT, I noticed that it has lower volume such as XEQT. In that case, would it make it difficult to liquidate ZEQT when required to do so? Otherwise I am a fan of a ZEQT but I have this concern. Thank you for creating these videos and channel. Very informative and well explained in a clear easy to understand manner.
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM Год назад
@Anwaar S - Low trading volume isn't a concern for diversified ETFs (like ZEQT) - just stick with limit orders when buying or selling. I would also suggest reading this article: Understanding ETF liquidity and trading: www.vanguard.ca/documents/understanding-etf-liquidity-and-trading-en.pdf

Two quick questions for you Justin, you'll be happy to know neither are about ETF's. (1) how do you fine the time to produce such well written and produced videos? (2) who do you use to produce your videos? Is Dustin behind the camera? ;-) db

@David Bateson - I don't think I've ever had non-ETF related questions! 1) I find time daily between 5 am to 7:30 am, 7 pm to 9 pm, and weekends/”vacations” 😉 2) There are many individuals involved in the video production from start to finish: - Research: Justin Bender - Script writing: Justin Bender - Script editing: Wendy Cook (www.wendyjcook.com/plain-speak-blog/) or Dan Bortolotti (canadiancouchpotato.com/) - Video recording: Justin Bender (I control the video with my iPhone, so Dustin is not required 😉) - Video and audio editing: Justin Bender - Animation concept planning: Justin Bender - Video animator: Ryan Conlin (5side.tv/author/5side/) - RU-vid thumbnail design: Abejane Alvarez (www.pwlcapital.com/profile/abejane-lou-alvarez/) - Project manager: Angelica Montagano (www.pwlcapital.com/profile/angelica-montagano/)

Thank you for sharing Justin. Quick question for you. I understand the market-cap weighting of these funds, but are all of these asset allocation funds (including Vanguard) capped in terms of a maximum limit on the weight given to an asset in an index. XIC is a capped fund for example. Also, is it worth comparing the dividend yield for these funds? Thank you and Happy New Year!
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 3 года назад
@Jeff Silver - Happy new year, Jeff! XIC and ZCN are the only two ETFs within the iShares Core ETF Portfolios, Vanguard Asset Allocation ETFs and BMO Asset Allocation ETFs that follow an index that caps specific company weights. XIC and ZCN both follow the S&P/TSX Capped Composite Index, which caps all companies at a 10% maximum weight. The dividend yields on all comparable ETFs are similar, so a comparison adds little to the decision-making process.
@jeffsilver5762
@jeffsilver5762 3 года назад
@@JustinBenderCPM Great thank you so much Justin! I guess if capped is not included in the name then I can assume a fund is not capped.Thanks again Justin!

You are discussing funds of funds without ever mentionning the sub fund MER. Don't they add up and increase the total fees being paid or am I missing something?
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 3 года назад
@Robert Poitras - The ETF companies don't double-dip on the underlying fund MERs (the MER quoted for the asset allocation ETFs is the total MER).

@bedfil 3 года назад
Hi Justin, Looking at the BMO ETFs the volume are relatively low than the ishare or vanguard ETFs. Would you see that as a major downside? I'm holding ishare XCNS and looking to diversify with ZCON but the daily volume is about 500 and 3 month average only 2K.
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 3 года назад
@bedfil - I don't consider a low trading volume as a reason to avoid the BMO AA ETFs (as long as you are using limit orders to place your trades). Remember, the liquidity of an ETF depends on the liquidity of the underlying holdings (which are arguably even more liquid than the Vanguard or iShares AA ETFs, which include less liquid foreign small cap stocks).

Hi Justin, I have a similar question to the one I asked on your Vanguard vs iShares video. Do you know if BMO reviews/changes their strategic asset mix more often?
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 3 года назад
@Eri Gjoka - They're not expected to make significant changes to their strategic asset mix either (all three AA ETF providers are relatively passive in this regard).

Hi thank you for your videos. Do you have any information about the new Fidelity all in ETF's? (FBAL& FGRO) They are listed on Neo exchange so there is very little information on them. Thank you.
@JustinBenderCPM

@Andre L - They are just another actively managed ETF solution that index investors can safely ignore.

HI Justin, can you recommend another ETF that would be more tax efficient for a non-registered account? I have found HBAL and HGRO but would like another option as well.
@JustinBenderCPM
@JustinBenderCPM 2 года назад
@G B - You need to first determine what market exposure you want, and then determine appropriate ETFs for that exposure. Just buying random "tax-efficient" ETFs is not a solid investment process. What are you trying to accomplish in terms of the overall portfolio?
