The Rossum-Electro Music Assimil8or is a multi-timbral phase modulation eurorack sampler module and is the jewel of Dave Rossum’s decades-long pioneering of affordable professional sampling technology.
In this video, I will take you on a little workflow journey and a creative way to modulate a few parameters. Spoiler alert: Ambient jam at the end of the video.
The full playlist for this Deep Dive Series with the Rossum-Electro Music Assimil8or can be found here:

I love this module, and want to show my appreciation for it, and also for the eurorack community who has helped me so generously and patiently.

thanks for showing this! totally amazing. I want to start my first modular with this sampler (for ambient) and im impressed what came out of those 2 samples! also this fader is great, can basically work as a cheaper mixer module as well.

What a great investment to start with---and probably something harder to buy once you've been in for a while. Good idea--swallow the bitter pill (of the pricetag) and get on with it. LOL. BTW I did the same thing.

@@JohnoWells Yep - I basically replicated the Dune chants with pitched down vocals (like -40) and modulation.

god this video series is so insanely good you are truly a good instructor (I'm a teacher too, so I recognize) Something about the way you've clearly blocked out what you're teaching in each segment, plus an easy voice to listen to Anyway, still can't believe you sold your Assimil8or 😆

Thank you so much for the kind words - making this series was a lot of fun. And yeah--selling my Assimil8or felt super weird, but at the same time--working in 7U/104 for live, I just can't justify the HP of the giant sampler. The BitBox micro does stuff I really needed, and missed with the Assimil8or (clockable, great slicer, works well with loops and keeping them in time with BPM, etc), and for the price and size - it was the choice for me. The BitBox Micro isn't the "mercedes benz-class" experience of the Assimil8or, but it works perfectly for my use.

@@JohnoWells which would be best in your opinion at fucking up vocal samples. so far what ive heard with the small grain size on the assim is not so good. heard a diff vid of the bit box, and it seemed pretty good with the smaller grain sizes. but you've had hands on both, and would like to know your thoughts. how do both sound, and how's navigation on each. oh can bit box share cv with different destinations? I think the assim, if I recall correctly in your other vids. good vids 👍🏾 thanks in advance

@@TRaddcliff Well, it sounds like you want granular here---and the Assimil8or is just not that machine. And the granular stuff on the BitBox is passable at best. Tell me more about what you want to do. And also--for granular--check out Arbhar, Nebulae, and Morphagene.
@TRaddcliff
@TRaddcliff Год назад
@@JohnoWells I’ve got a Morphagene. I’ll check those others out. Dunno if you ever heard the old Ae interview. It’s all cut up. Their interview is all granulated out in an interesting way. I try stuff like that, but it doesn’t come out as well. I’ll see if I can find that and add that link. Got it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SJM8K73RofU.html Wanna set a micro loop, and scrub thru the sample, slowing down or speeding the dialog, with out it sounding shitty.

Which reverb is patched in here? Sounds beautiful! Clouds or clouds variant perhaps? Also is there any way to set looping to zigzag playback back and forth like on other samplers?
@JohnoWells
@JohnoWells Год назад
I'm not positive, but I bet the reverb was FXAid. And the looping could be CV'd to have the playback move, no? I forget, but I think I'm doing that in this video.

Hello i erase the sd card my assimil8tor dint charge the file system you know where i can download the sd contents? Thanks

If you're talking about the original SD card content that the assimil8or shipped with...I bet you could contact Rossum and they'd send you those samples in a zip file. Maybe? They should. LOL. I found their support form for you: www.rossum-electro.com/support/support-request-form/

Does this work in a similar way with the Bitbox? Im trying to decide which sampler to add to by rack.

I believe it's better on the Bitbox Micro (the only one I've used of that series) - read my response to @NICU below.

Amazing! Although it's more expensive, one has to wonder if it would be better to replace a 1010 Music Bitbox with this. Seems far more user friendly, and (more important) creative or just as a utility, like triggering drum samples. BTW, you mention the ES301, so I'd be interested to know what are some of the pro/cons comparisons between these two modules. After all, if you're buying one or the other, the prices are fairly similar, so how can one make a choice (without buying both) .... if you had to advise us? Thanks in advance.

As for the BitBox---I've actually sold my Assimil8or because I was favoring the BitBox Micro so much that I was never using the Assimil8or. It just comes down to abilities and size. The slice functions in the BBM are amazing. You can send clock to it and tempo-sync loops. Assimil8or will never do that. But you're right, the mercedes-benz experience of Rossum stuff is no joke. It's solid and well made. As for the ER301 compared to the Assimil8or--they can't be compared in almost any way. Or shouldn't be, The Assimil8or is a meat-and-potatoes sampler. It does what it does really well. It's super simple. The ER301 is called a "sound computer" for good reason. It's incredibly deep---you can build full on modules inside the environment. It can really be anything you want it to be. If you got it, and used it as a sample playback module, you should have gotten the BitBox Micro and call this done. LOL

@@JohnoWells Point taken, and, you've inspired me to really take a deeper look at the BBM. Actually, one thing that seem to be on youtube is some interesting tutorials on using the BBM. I have one which I use in various situations. However, one of the frustrations is the inability to route channels where you wish. This means you can be quickly limited if you wish to control the pitch of a sample since you also need to trigger it. If 1010 would simply change the use of the OUTs on the module so that they could also be routed (as gates or CV or ..), you'd have an even more powerful module. Thanks for your reply, very useful.

@@wilshire1200 ya, it's really no shade on the ass8. I just really wanted the slice and dice capabilities of the BBM, and the price/size is a sweet spot in eurorack samplers, IMO. But...the touch screen is goofy, the OS isn't as elegant as the ass8..less capable in so many ways...but.....more capable in other ways. Again--size and price wins with BBM for me.

I appreciate the reply Johno. It's a testament to how personal this stuff is, and at the end of the day the UI is so critical. Ive had the BB for awhile and have been continually curious about the A8. I just got a 'good' deal on the A8 and will be curious how they shake out. I will say, the A8 does in fact sound incredible, its very logically laid out, and DC coupled nature of it makes a unique case for using samples as raw material. Anyhow, happy wiggles to you! ;) @@JohnoWells
