We are receiving a lot of questions this summer about coneflowers (Echinacea spp.) having green, deformed flower heads. Aster Yellows is a disease that causes a reduction of the flower size, greening of the flowers, and even sometimes green growths out of the center of the flowers. The disease is caused by a bacterium-like organism that's spread by leafhopper insects that fly from plant to plant. The disease is systemic (runs throughout the whole plant) and there is no cure for it. To manage this disease, remove symptomatic plants quickly from your garden so that the disease does not spread to your healthy plants. - Presented by University of Maryland Extension Principal Agent Dr. David Clement (July 2023)
