Buy your own virus testing kit! Either use the company we found or search online. But here is the exact test we used. The detection rate is equivalent to a laboratory test. Viruses included in the test can be found in the TECHNICAL INFORMATION tab.
Easy peasy!
Remember - this doesn't technically mean that a plant passing this test is not viral, it simply means we can rule out all of the viruses listed in this technical spec.

THANK YOU for sharing this and not only that....thank you for stating that just because it tests negative for the common ones doesn't mean that it is 100% in the clear. Just means that what is typically tested for doesn't show up. I guess maybe one good thing with COVID is people are more familiar with rapid tests now. I'm a scientist and for an entire year of my career I ran ELISAs testing for tomato spotted wilt virus and it just drives me nuts when people have no idea how these things work. Lol. Thanks for sharing this video!

This is fantastic. Also, in the US, many state universities will test samples for free. Pennsylvania state university does, I know that for sure. They’ll even test your plants to determine pests. All for free. So the fact that people don’t do this is just shady on their part. Thank you for doing this to show how easy it is.

Definitely! Any school that has a biology program especially one with a subsection of botany would be able to help either test or guide you into getting a good test. My friend uses Penn state for her plant business

As both a molecular biologist and a Philodendron nerd, I appreciate this video. To be certain this has worked however, you would ideally also apply to a plant with a known virus (positive control) and a plant known not to have any virus (Negative control). That way you would be certain that the assay worked.

Thank you Kaylee! Loved this video! I have some orchids that went through the heat dome event at my house, where it reached 118F (47.7C) . I'm not sure if they are damaged by the extreme heat, or if they have a virus. I'll be looking into some test kits.

How freaking cool, I had no idea that they had at home tests available! I actually work for the University of Florida and I know we’re one of the top places in the US to send plants to test for mosaic (and others), but it’s $100+ to test a sample. Might have to look into these because I suspect I have a sodiroi with mosaic 😅 gorgeous plant and I’m glad it’s healthy!

Hey Kaylee, thanks for posting this! If you do this again at some point and you wanted to be even more careful, you can always do it in the laminar flow hood that you used for your cell culture video to limit any airborne contaminants. This looks like a type of ELISA kit, that works in almost the exact same way as a pregnancy test. Congrats on the not pregnant plant!

Something you said when talking about the "mint" varieties is happening here and is twisting the leaf. I'm sure you were worried about the deformities but I seem to remember reading or hearing that because of the lacking chlorophyll in the white parts they don't grow as much or as well so cause this twisting in a lot of Variegated plants. Tyler Thrasher had it happen very obviously with one of his creations

I dare them to do a similar video on the adansonii mint 👀👀👀. But surely they dont have the balls for it haha. I love that theres actually these simple test kits! That makes it so accessible to everybody! But i have to say.. as a lab-geek I was hoping to see you and Ben swear at the process of performing an ELISA or PCR test yourself 😂😂 because those for sure are more tedious than this haha. And not that it really matters but just fyi; but as far as im aware an ELISA test is referred to as the name Elisa worldwide, not the spelling as Ben did. But the important part is that we knew what you meant ☺️☺️. Great video and keep up the sass!
