In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Church by Asterism.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Hal-Ca is a diamond in the world of guitar music, a real discovery. A creative gifted girl who created her own group at the age of 11. Emotional, expressive, technically unattainable for many accomplished guitarists. In my opinion, at the moment she is one of the strongest guitarists in the world at such a young age, 19 years old. I have high hopes for her.

Fantastic band, all three of them. Haruka can absolutely shred 1000 notes/second when she feels like.

As for me, I judge guitarists not from their speed, but when they bending strings, because bending must involving feeling and emotion, without it bending sound will be bland or maybe out of tune.... and this girl, Hal-Ca, doing it perfectly.

Not only is their talent off the map, but the thought they put behind their concept album, “Guernica + a”, is amazing too. They were inspired by Picasso’s famous painting, researched the whole sorry episode that inspired Picasso and then wrote the music for the album. There’s a 2 part video on YT where they discuss the album, first part has English subtitles. They’ve started to incorporate some vocals (all three doing some singing) and have done some covers with Maki Oyama.

She is a Yamaha artist. She is growing no doubt. All good prog, for me, takes you on a bit of a musical journey and usually ending up in a destination. I always struggled with Gentle Giant back in the day as it felt so quirky and didnt really have the flow that others did. I was being raised behind the iron curtain in the 60’s and 70’s as an american, and while in Poland in the late 70’s was introduced to a trio that had plenty of prog chops that could hold up with the best of them, a band called SBB. If you want a good time travel to something many have not heard try “Walkin around the stormy bay” album version from “Welcome”. Great album, world class keys. No Bass player if i remember correctly..

I've been listening to Asterism almost daily since I discovered them a couple of years back. They are about as talented as it's possible to get. And while it's easy to get impressed by their technical skill, it's the music they write that keep me coming back for more. You really should try a performance with a live audience though. Haruka is a different beast when there's a crowd in front of the stage. "Dawn" would be my recommended song. Perhaps not quite as progressive as some of their latest stuff, but very original, varied and passionate. Probably my favourite piece of music right now. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-buQPvINJcA0.html

Think about what this teenage Japanese girl is doing. She's taking the best of the 70s Guitar God emoting guitar and adding the 2010's era of shredding to it. She's combining the best of both worlds..... and it's about damn time for the era of the crying guitar to return. In this instance, she giving that custom Yamaha Pacifica such a beat down the strings are screaming for forgiveness.

You should check out the recordings/videos they made when the guitarist and bassist were twelve. They were just as good back then.

Mio the drummer and Miyu the bass guitarist are brothers. HAL-CA, the stage name for the guitarist, started playing at age ten. I believe she's playing a Yamaha Pacifica here, although if I remember correctly, she recently switched up to another Yamaha or to ESP. Miyu's favorite artists are listed on the website as Jaco Pastorius and Billy Sheehan, and I can hear both in his playing. My recommendation for your next stop with Asterism is the live version of "Blaze." Here's a link. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-51Pxkp8lGAs.html

They recently started singing as well, already quite promising for their first try with vocals: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c3rsGBIQfPk.html And I didn't see any Lisa-X videos on your channel on the first look, definitely also worth a try. Lisa-X is another guitar prodigy from Japan, currently about 17 years old. Their latest songs is an awesome prog-rock piece: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fFxdWRgBxMg.html

I knew guitarist Lisa-X but didn't know much about her band. Very good song. The band has a very good singer. And find Hazuki of Nemophila on guitar. Thank you.

I'm honestly disappointed to hear that they started having vocals on their music. I absolutely love instrumental bands and Asterism is one of my favourite Japanese bands that I discovered the last year together with Band-Maid and Nemophila. I really hope Amuse is not going to tell them to change too much and let them decide for themselves which direction they are taking their music. I don't mind vocals in music, but I just can't help to have the feeling they are pushed by their label and I absolutely would hate it if that's the case. That being said, I'm all for it if they decided they wanted to add vocals for themselves without pressure from outside. I still wish they would keep doing a lot of instrumentals, but it is what it is. They do deserve to be more well known and I noticed a lot of people prefer vocals/lyrics in their music for whatever reason, so i guess that might help. It's just that there are a bazillion bands that have vocalists and way less instrumental bands, so I loved to find a good instrumental band with all the technicallity a lot of the Japanese musicians have. Edit: Btw to be clear, I am very happy for them that they have a record deal, but I am somewhat afraid of Amuse because Asterism can use reactors reacting to their music to get their name out there and Amuse is somewhat notorious for blocking certain videos, so I hope they don't do that for Asterism. I just hope they can have all the creative freedom they deserve without too many restrictions, let that band grow naturally.

@@MaartenT There's is zero evidence that signing with Amuse two years ago has been anything but good for the group. 'GUERNICA' (2020) and 'GUERNICA + a' (2021) are their most experimental and progressive works so far.
@MaartenT

@@rickwagner- Great. I really hope it stays that way, the band deserves it. I am still worried about them blocking reaction videos, but let's hope it doesn't come to that. This band deserves as much exposure as they can get. I have no real problems with them going for vocals long as it is their own decision even though it might kill some of my joy I have for the band depending on what they are going to do with it. I am always trying to keep as much of an open mind with this as possible though. I am looking forward to their new album or EP to see how they evolve and will make a decision if I will keep buying their CD's or not depending on how that's going to turn out. GUERNICA/GUERNICA+a is for sure my favourite of their releases, so no complaints there from me. Edit: Apparently youtube ate Rick's comment, probably because of the period in the name between Amuse and inc. RU-vid is ridiculous sometimes.

@@MaartenT Their 'with vocal' song "Metal" is a great song, even though I'm not sure about "Risky" song, I think it's too cheesy for ASTERISM... but keep in mind those two songs haven't officially released, so we should wait for final release.

This hole CD is awesome! They have all those song played live in a studio.... the future is bright! They have started to sing but they need a singer that keeps this level.. Hal-Ca (Haruka) voice isn't on the level she plays the guitar....
