I was told I had astigmatism when I was 8 years old but I had 20/20 vision until I was in my mid 30’s. I got glasses when I was 37 and it was mind blowing. I could see blades of grass and single leaves on a tree. I thought I could see until I put those glasses on.

This is the best I've seen at showing examples of what Astigmatism looks like in the real world. The ghosting of letters (especially on a digital screen) is spot on!

I wish I had known this about ten years ago. They gave me glasses with a high axis, and I could not wear the glasses due to the severe ghosting, but they told me the glasses were fine, that the axis shouldn't make a difference. And I paid a lot for the glasses. In later prescriptions the axis was lower, and I could see well out of them.

So many times I have had eye doctors suggest that I have blurry vision, astigmatism. The ghosting is much more like my vision. It is not blurred but multiple images vertically in each eye. Ghosts yes but the 2nd image is 90% as dark, so hardly a "ghost" the 3rd and 4th are fainter. Oh and the different images spread out, "vertically" the more tired I am, or the more tired my eyes are. Never got a proper DX as optometrists seem panicked when I have multi images in each eye.

Try reading glasses! I just finished making a hand sewn 1183 style dress ( the hem was 13 feet around), using my reading glasses. No eye strain at all. I have worn progressive lenses, but hated having to move my head to keep things in focus, so I went back to my trifocals.

I went from both eyes being slightly far nearsighted to suddenly having Astigmatism . My friend had that for as long as I knew him but I never thought anyone with pretty normal eyes would suddenly get that without any injury or anything causing it. Obviously I knew nothing about Astigmatism . I first noticed something was wrong when I could not read my pill bottles. So I went to see the eye doctor and found out that I now have Astigmatism . Mine is side by side but also a little angle. Driving at night and during rain is hell for me and bright lights on cars.

Thank you! I appreciate that. Peripheral defocus is not a new concept. There are some very fascinating ideas around different levels of defocus hitting on the superior retina vs the inferior and how that influences eye growth. I hope to have several videos this fall on Myopia and the theories. As far as TBI rehab, part of my residency at the VA included TBI rehab, so I have some experience with it. I was able to see many patients improve with vision therapy protocols.

Are you more likely to develop strabismus with astigmatism? I feel like one of my eyes wanders outwards but I can’t tell if it’s visible or if it just feels that way since that’s the eye with more astigmatism? I only feel it without my contacts in and when looking far away.

Can astigmatism develop from squinting your eyes ? I had not corrected myopia for most od my life, i didnt wear glasses or contacts, I was squinting my eyes 24/7. My doctor says thats likely why my astigmatism developed cause the angle of astigmatism matches eyelids or something like that. Is it really possible ?
@R3cce
@R3cce Год назад
Astigmatism can develop due to several reasons. I will name a few of them: 1) It can simply be due to genetics. If a family member has astigmatism, then there is a chance that you will have it aswell. 2) Frequently rubbing your eyes can put pressure on the cornea and cause astigmatism to develop. It is therefore not recommended to rub your eyes too often. 3) Like you already mentioned, pressure from the eyelids like squinting can cause astigmatism to develop

The genetic component is interesting. I recently got diagnosed with an astigmatism at age 26. I have Native American ancestry on both sides of my family. I’ve always said that my dad’s side had strong Native genes as my eyes will squint a lot when I smile or laugh to the point that they almost disappeared. I’ve even been asked if I have Asian ancestry because of my eyes. So it kinda makes sense to me. Although no one has told me what type of an astigmatism I got. I do need to visit the optometrist soon.

I definitely have the "ghosting" effect (up and down), I don't notice long streaks of light though. Usually light sources are multiple round fuzzy balls (I also have myopia) that can be slightly oval shaped. One of my oldest prescription from when I was a kid only had -0.50D of cylinder but today it's -2.00D CYL. I wore contacts from ~2005-2008 and they were of the soft type. There was no dash on them so I assume they only were spherical ones. They were pretty small too and was monthly contacts (so I just put them back into the plastic container with the solution and the next morning I cleaned them off with a new solution from the bottle). It was pretty pricy iirc, ~$100 a month or so (my memory might be failing me, unsure if they came with one or multiple packages). Sometimes after extended periods of use it was difficult to take them out and occasionally I accidentally touched my eyeball directly thinking I had contacts in when I didn't. My speculation why my astigmatism got worse is I might have caused "wear and tear" of my cornea. If I continued to exclusively using glasses instead it might have not gone that much worse. I haven't worn contacts since 2008.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Год назад
That is an interesting idea. Although I have not seen any published evidence of soft contact lens wear leading to worse astigmatism. I could imagine RGP lenses maybe having an influence in the cornea.

I went to USZ - Universitätsspital Zürich: Zurich hospital which is a university hospital with severe eye blurriness. I demanded lasik and the very elderly professor refused to do any work on my eye- he said vision problems were the result of neurological issues of the brain not adjusting to the change in image and reforming the image no matter the deformity of cornea. At age 80 he wore no glasses and was still an ophthalmologist surgeon. I had one exercise to do daily every day- hold a pin, or sharp pencil, or a hair as close to my eyes as possible (in front of nose) where I could still focus well on it - then slowly moving the small object away, always maintaining focus. Then return the object to in front of nose as close as still in focus. Do this for ten minutes. The other contraption was 500-20000mL soda bottle cap with a pin-hole made in It (by a heated up unbent paper-clip- the surgeon still smoked a pipe). I had to use this pinhole bottle-cap monocle all day: a piece of cardboard with a pin-hole punched in- I had to "wear" that single hole spectacle all day. My vision is now 20-20 from hypermy tropia and astigmatism- I also suffered trauma to eyes from chemical burns and strikes with wood and metal. Never had retina damage, thank God, and always wore safety welding glasses (no the safety "squint" and turn away as you spot in a tacking weld). People forget the brain interprets what the eye sees- sometimes part of vision correction si- i.e. corneal input and tomogrpahy.t

That is a very wise thing to point out. I apologize for any misrepresentation of the published data. Perhaps the phrasing was my own wrongdoing. I may be ignorant of the differences so I appreciate you pointing this out. I think, perhaps my own confusion of the terms stems from my training, in that in school they teach/present patient cases such as " a 39 year old Hispanic male presents to your office...", which I ignorantly may have just adopted as a term to describe a group of people. I will educate myself more on this. thank you for bringing it to my attention.

@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Год назад
Glasses are more likely to induce a sort of "fish eye effect" due to the prismatic movements sometimes observed when looking through glasses with a higher prescription. Because contact lenses rest on the eye, they move with the eyes and so you don't see the same swim movements you can sometimes see with spectacle lenses.

@@DoctorEyeHealth wow, thanks a lot for the answer, I actually did not expect it! The problem is that the distortions are constant. Local doctors say I should get used to them, but it's been years and I can still see them at all times. For example, my curved monitor seems flat with my glasses. And flat things are warped towards me. I wonder if the problem is with prescription or the glasses production. Or it's just the reality people with astigmatism have to live with. 🙄

As a consequence I am constantly feeling sick and falling...Unfortunately I have been to a neuroophtamologist because of this, but so far everything seems to be fine. Could you or could you give me some advice? ( I have been wearing glasses for a very long time,but there has been no improvement and I can't feel the ground either - rising,sloping). The whole lens is bulging not just at the edges.It's like a big fat belly. I'm 35 now and I've had glasses since I was 12, I didn't have this problem before until 3 years ago. 😢

Hello Doctor! A problem to which I get no answer! I have astigmatism and I recently had a check-up, after which I opted for new glasses. The problem is that when I use the new glasses, the left eye (SPH-0; CYL-3,5; AX 15) does not have detailed distance vision! But it is corrected if I tilt my head towards the right shoulder, or turn the glasses clockwise! The Ophthalmological Cabinet says that the left lens is fitted according to the prescription (Ax-15°)!!! The old glasses have the same prescription, nothing different. The left lens from the old glasses has the same dioptre, the same Axis, but I don't have this problem with them, so much so that they are worn.... What is the mystery?!!! Thank you!

I don't mind having to wear glasses after surgery, if I have to, I just want my eye to come out of the surgery as healthy as possible & don't want to spend money on a lens to correct astigmatism "if" the lens really does not benefit me at all. If a specialized lens will benefit me, & I still have to wear glasses, then I am okay with that. I just want to know all the "ifs," "ands," or "buts," so I can make the most informed decision. `i can't be the only person in baby boomer generation facing with this decision.

What is your thought on holistic eye care? Repairing one's eyes by exercising them. Miller Schieder wrote a book about it.

Before doing the exercises I saw blobs, but tracing edges of things really changed my vision! Still "blind as a bat" / 20/500 but it's amazing how much better sight without glasses got quickly

Will rubbing your eyes cause you to have astigmatism? If so if you reduce will your stigmatize improve? If you reduce rubbing your eyes will it reduce your astigmatism?

I had an infection of the retina where my vision has been impaired and what I see is like looking through a glass with light tea or coffee. Things are darker and oftentimes straight edges look crooked.

If you want a good visual representation of what vertical ('against the rule') astigmatism looks like, find a movie filmed with an anamorphic lens. Apocalypse Now is the first movie in which I happened to notice this. For instance, look at the out-of-focus lights in the bridge scene: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tvTIdU_Gvyk.html Of course the camera only has one "eye". Personally, I don't have much binocular vision, so I don't really know what the binocular view of astigmatism looks like, but I have vertical astigmatism in my left eye and this is exactly what it looks like in that eye. There's no discernible effect for things that are in focus, but as things go out of focus the blur is vertically stretched and this is most obvious for point sources of light, which become vertically elongated ovals. Of course, the experience is going to vary for different people, but that's what I get and it matches the output of an anamorpic lens. I also have horizontal ('with the rule') astigmatism in my right eye, and it's the same thing rotated by about 90 degrees.

My ghosting was on a diagonal, it was only .2 but it was distracting, especially with new reflective road signs and street safety markings, I don't understand why the DOT would approve these signs.

Is it possible to get glasses just for astigmatism? I am near sighted, but wearing my glasses for reading and using the PC makes my eyes feel tired despite letting me see quite clear up close.

What causes astigmatism: What causes astigmatism? Astigmatism happens when your cornea or lens has a different shape than normal. The shape makes light bend differently as it enters your eye, causing a refractive error. Doctors don't know what causes astigmatism, and there's no way to prevent it

I have fairly low astigmatism (.50 both sides), when I read from a screen the letters seem like they’re dancing, now I know it’s the shadow from the ghosting. When I watch ballet in the front row seat I have a hard time having a clear mental picture of their faces. I can make out their facial features but the edges are all fuzzy. It’s quite annoying, I have a fairly flat nose bridge so I have a hard time wearing glasses and wish there would be more choices in contact lenses.

lazer barrage to treat retinal vein occlusion changes the shape of the eyeball and causes a form of astigmatism -- manifests as double vision because each eye shows a different point of focus.

i was thinking, my perscription from 10 years ago was quite different to my new one. could that be due to new more precise tec or can they really go from say 1.7 to 3.5 in 10 years

If there was a way for glasses to not distort the actual size of the eyes and face that would be great, because I think most people are simply not comfortable with them for this reason and not all of us can wear contact lenses for various reasons. So many technological advances and there are still no glasses with which you feel like yourself (I mean high diopters, of course).

I am cutrently testing contact lenses and none of them Works. They always unfocus or my vision is never good. My optician says it is because I have quarter pts of astigm.and lenses cannot be precise enough. I am testing lenses but so many are always moving on my eye I cannot see focus. He tried to compensate the astigmatism by over correcting myopia causing fatigue pain... I tried 3 pairs and all of them were bad.

Useless from my viewpoint, because you constantly say “high level” or other GENERALIZED “level” without SPECIFICS for your viewers like the darned EXACT DIOPTER NUMBERS SO VIEWERS CAN RELATE their request for standard lens, toric specialty lens! Please, use diopter numbers that viewers can relate to their eyes!

Yet another question coming your way! I have pronounced astigmatism in my left eye. The last perscription I got is perfect for the right eye, but the left is still blurry. I was told that "the eyes are supposed to work together" and that the blurriness was acceptable. I worry that I wouldn't pass a driving vision test if made to cover my right eye and read tiny letters -- my state allows for only one mistake when they make you re-take the eye exam. Do I have any recourse? Should I go to a different eye clinic?

Ive seen people with dry eyes even before the invention of computer. Therefore to diagnose each case in 1 great big excessive screen use bubble is negligent at least. How about genetics or work environment or bad air quality in home etc. etc.
