You should try some night time recording. My astigmatism gets real bad when looking at something bright at night. Some light sources can appear as multiple. Especially some light strips, like at the edge of some steps/stairs that go against direction of astigmatism. Instead of one it can look like a barcode. Not to mention bus line numbers, literally unreadable. Or the full moon can look weird. When i look at specific angle i can even see chromatic aberration, even with glasses on. Different colours of traffic lights being affected to different degree is also interesting. Red being mostly fine, but blue from ambulance creates huge starburst and streaks.

That's my "normal" vision, so I think you've done a good job here. I have astigmatism as well. I wear glasses, but my prescription numbers are very far apart (difference) that my vision is blurry even with glasses. I have to close one eye to see things more clearly, especially text. I was told that contacts are the solution but I'm right under the threshold for my vision plan to cover those. Years ago, I saved up some money to get the contacts lens exam and contacts, but the lenses I was given made my eyes hurt. I kept trying, but it just got worse. I didn't go back to try another because I was so disheartened. A friend who once worked as an optician told me that there's a method for getting used to contacts: start for an hour or two one day, and gradually work your way up (and if one kind doesn't work, you should be able to go back and see what's up with the fit/scrip or try another brand). Anyway, I have astigmatism, blurry vision, randomly "very brief" shaky vision (nystagmus, I believe), headaches, dizziness, and sensitivity to bright light. And, oddly, both of my eyes can drift (never at the same time though - thank goodness). The drift happens most often when I'm tired. But I can also intentionally or unintentionally drift whichever one I need to(!) if I'm trying to read something that my astigmatism renders blurry. I most often catch myself unintentionally doing this while watching watching tv or reading. I frequently close/cover an eye to check myself. I try not to let the drift happen because, 1) I don't want my brain to get in the habit of using drifting to get a clearer picture, and 2) I don't want my eye muscles to get any more screwed up than they already are. They're supposed to move synchronously. I've been told that there's surgery for this (to resynch the eyes?) but I haven't looked into it. Kinda scares me bc it's gotta be more invasive and risky than LASIK (which I'm already wary about..). Anyway, I know there's some kind of connection between drifting/wandering eyes and astigmatism. From what I've read, "lazy eye" technically is one eye being weaker than the other (not necessarily drifting). But it stands to reason that a "lazy"(i.e. weak) eye will drift so that the better eye can provide the brain with a clear (or "clear as possible") picture.

a big difference between the two eyes can pose a big challenge when trying to correct it, sounds like you have a tricky situation. I would agree with the fact that the first option I would have considered was contact lenses given that CLs induce less relative magnification compared to glasses, although if the eyes (and/or brain) are not used to having such corrections in the first place may not accept it easily.

The bird at 5:00 is a common gallinule, which can easily be confused for a swamphen. Gallinules tend to be the dusky grey in color, while the swamphen is more purples, blues, and greens. Their beaks are also noticeably different in shape. I can see where it might be difficult to tell them apart since they seem to have a similar body shape and size.

Does the blurriness you get from astigmatism look significantly different than what you'd see with regular old nearsightedness? I'm mildly myopic and have astigmatism, have no trouble seeing small text/objects up close, but objects more than a couple feet away start getting blurry. How do I know if this is from my astigmatism or nearsightedness (and does it even matter)?? Also, light sources (like the headlights of oncoming cars) often have these long rays coming out of them and intersecting with the rays from other light sources, this makes driving at night really weird and stressful because it's hard to see properly. Is this an astigmatism thing?
@AntonioTheOptom
@AntonioTheOptom День назад
Yes a different type of blur if you are myopic. If you have both then I guess it’ll be a mixture of both. I made a video comparing myopic blur vs astigmatic blur on my channel in case you were interested! 👍

Thank you for raising awareness about astigmatism. I’ve had it for several years and going outside familiar places (without glasses or contacts) is truly a daunting experience and I can no longer venture outdoors without some kind of vision correction. I have relatively mild nearsightedness coupled with against the rule astigmatism and yet, the distortion is out of this world. My eyes look asymmetrical too - my left eye has the poorest vision of the two yet is the one that works hardest and for my right eye, it feels like there’s always something covering it and it looks distanced (out of focus) from the countenance. Not expecting a diagnosis in the comments section but was wondering if this might be a common experience for fellow astigmatism sufferers…

The bird at 5:00 is an Australasian swamphen, or over here in New Zealand, we call them pūkeko. I think they have an interesting social approach to raising their young, and I like how the adults will hold food with their foot for their chicks. In short, some people consider them pests, but I think they're interesting. Shame they'll dine on other bird species, though.

It actually looks more like a dusky moorhen, but they look very similar to swamphens! One difference I look out for is the swamphens' beaks form more of a smoother curve, while the moorhens' beaks have more of a 'dint' in them.

interesting to see, my vision is bad to begin with on top of having astigmatism and as it's always been corrected (well when ever i got them) i didn't know the impact it was having (that was being corrected). all i know is i can't make out text if it's more then 1 foot in front of my eyes. one of my eyes tends to drift and i notice that i'm not even really looking out one of them. pretty annoying. really wanted to get lasik or whatever else is out there now. sadly the world sucks as a whole and so can't have nice things.

Why specifically astigmatism? Isn't it the same for any dioptry?
@Beading_Kate
@Beading_Kate 10 часов назад
No, it’s not the same. Myopia (near sight) and presbyopia (long sight) are different from astigmatism. Although it may look similarly blurry picture, it really is not the same. Myopia, for example, will make everything in the distance look blurry in general, but near objects will be fine, crisp and clear (may be very near objects depending on the level). Astigmatism, on the other hand, makes everything blurry, no matter the distance, and the blur is usually very specific kind of blur… as if someone “smeared” the picture in one direction. For example, horizontal lines look good, but verticals are smeared or doubled, tripled etc. Or vice versa. Sometimes an angle isn’t as simple, could be blurred in diagonal direction. This is what people refer to when they talk about the angle in astigmatism. So, it’s not the same 😊

Do you only need CYL, or does this distortion have any SPH involved? I've got low astigmatism (0.5D on both eyes), but -3.00D SPH which makes things pretty difficult. Granted, those 2.00D CYL do seem hard to deal with as well, I'm not sure which I'd rather have (excluding the obvious, none), I'm imagining myself with that distortion as opposed to mine, and it feels like it wouldn't be as bad, but I can't say for sure. Perhaps you could make a video from the perspective of that amount of correction? I feel like it's common enough to warrant it! Great video regardless though! By the way Antonio, not related to the video, what is your opinion on plus lenses/reduced prescription for up close work such as staring at a monitor, when you're nearsighted? (imagine minus contacts with plus glasses, for example, or just a reduced prescription), would love to know your input on this.
@AntonioTheOptom
@AntonioTheOptom День назад
thanks for the comment! firstly, the distortion I've shown here is just purely cylindrical (+2.00 cyl x 180) but you definitely can include SPH as well. For seeing in the distance a +ve SPH power would make things more blurry (inducing myopia on top of the astigmatism). My prescription is +ve SPH with -ve CYL (hyperopic astigmatism) so technically it would be slightly less blurry than what is shown here - given that my eyes still have the ability to accommodate the hyperopia. To simulate this I would put a -ve SPH and +ve CYL although getting the accommodation to be as good as a human eye would still be a challenge. If you are myopic then you most definitely can use a reduced +ve SPH for near tasks (if you are not a progressing myope) because the myopia will take away the need for extra +ve SPH power. hope this helps!
