Aston Martin V8 Vantage S vs Lotus Evora 400 - A Quick Comparison

After filming my V8 Vantage review, we had the two cars together and it seemed criminal not to do a quick assessment of the two. So here are some very brief thoughts for those considering one or two of these superb British beasties.

For me the Lotus is a better choice as its a new car if the requirement is a daily driver. Couple of friends have had horrific bills with Astons out of warranty. As a second car I may choose the Aston or even a 2012 Evora S and save a bunch.

Read recently that the guy who tuned the chassis in the evora moved to Aston Martin in 2015, the next gen vantage is going to be one to look at. Kind of a pitty though, lotuses are lighter and lotus often gets contracted to tune other company's cars.

Evora has one big PRO for me - and that is the possibility of manual gearbox.

I know just there are some newer Astons with an option of 7-speed manual, but... Evora 400 has all I would dream for a car, but I heard it's quite unreliable, is it true?

I think if you were buying either of these cars, you would likely have a second car as a "daily" or something to be abused for lugging the dogs etc around. On that basis I think I would go for the Lotus which seems more track / driver orientated.

Interesting thoughts on the matter, perhaps it's a bit of a grey area? I know some people with 911 4S models and they daily those, the same for the Evora, that said I think personally I would do a bit of both. If I had the option I would have an Evora 400 to run as a daily car, going to work etc, but I would then also have something that could do more "daily" jobs like a Nissan Xtrail/Navara, Ford S-Max etc. I couldn't imagine taking my dogs out into the moors in an Evora, but I could imagine taking an Evora out into the moors for a good pelt if you see what I mean? I think while the Evora is a capable car and you can daily it in terms of going to work, getting the shopping and so on, it wouldn't be used for the dirtier tasks in life. Would you take rubbish to the tip in it for example?

James Martin ...One of my main reason NOT to buy the Aston is the position of the Handbrake!! It's next to the door.. and is a huge NOGO!!! James Martin ...You're right. Anyways... my vote still goes to Evora 400. You can compare any kind a car with Evora...I will always choose the Lotus!!! 👍👽 (...the next level after the Evora would be definitely the Huracan...and later on the Aventador roadster)

interesting, can you describe what it is about the lotus that makes you smile more? I have always loved the look of the vantage, my dream car indeed aesthetically, but when I drove various examples back to back with my 981 Cayman S, I didn't find it made me smile as much, it wasn't as fun, bigger, less visibility, less precise (more clumsy), it left me disappointed

Doing the EVO start up and rev inside a garage is an unfair comparison. Makes it sound better than vantage when it just doesnt

Hah you cheated by putting the Lotus in a garage so it would echo. The lotus sounds better anyway so I don't know why you did that.

Curry and chips vs Steak pie. Edit, the sporty Mondeo looks better. I have a Lotus but its less comfortable than a homeless cardboard box sporting a reclaimed blow up bed. Personally I'd take the Aston, but really do I need depreciation in my life? I'll stick with the blow up bed. I have more cars but it all comes down to the carboard box theory.

i do agree as the db9 is more of a gt car. however the seating configuration and the more lotus ish position in the db9 does make it quiet comparable. that beeing said, the db9 has a v12. ( i haven't been in any of those cars by the way) but in the end very interesting video. thanks for spreading the word of how good lotus cars wherer and still are

Not even on the same breath. A simile would be to compare a giggling and genetically gorgeous Essex girl fresh from the tanning saloon wearing her fuck me shoes and having a bunch of rubbers in her handbag. Standing beside her we have a similarly gorgeous temptress boasting a doctorate in fine arts, draped in haute couture and wearing a well practiced come hither demure smile. The only thing you'd be sure of is that one of 'em is gonna swallow.

The way I would compare the cars is to say that the Evora is more fun to drive on a short 400k of 4 hours trip, while the Vantage, would be more comfortable on an American superhighway driving 1200k in 12 hours. The Evora should cost less to maintain . The Vantage has an incredibly beautiful interior, leathered and stitched. As a not so ugly 6'-5" American, (there are 2.5 million Americans 6'- 4" and taller) ... I would prefer more legroom and headroom on both. Also, I would pay a premium for more gauges .... fluid temp ... oil temp ... transmission temp .... oil pressure .... water pressure .... voltmeter ... turbo/boost This A.M. branch called "Q" are you listening and reading. Why is it that .... Lambo .... Ferrari ..., McLaren .... Porche ... have ignored these gauges is beyond me ... Perhaps these manufactures want us to burn our engine or transmission right after our warranty expires,

James Martin I owned a Mercury villager & Honda Odyssey ... I was a soccer mom .... no gauges for oil, water, transmission ... I maintained both vans very well ... motor oil 100% synthetic ... filters ...and transmission oil .... air pressures ... coolant ... wheel alignments ... I used oils exceeding vehicle requirement .... I changed the motor oil twice a year especially before a long trip of say 4000k one way .... America is a YUUGE country. ... one year the yellow idiot light came on in my Villager .... engine was dead .... the next year ... transmission light came on in the Honda. ....Transmission gone ....both vehicles had just exceeded warranty limits ..... Had I had more gauges I would have been forwarded/signalled to stop NOW not tomorrow but now. ... and go to the nearest garage. ... maybe I've been a bit unlucky with cars but ... when your idiot light or warning comes on ... bye bye engine ... its too late
