The 1981 FA Charity Shield was the 59th FA Charity Shield, an annual football match played between the winners of the previous season's Football League and FA Cup competitions. The match was played on 22 August 1981 at Wembley Stadium and played between 1980--81 Football League champions Aston Villa and FA Cup winners Tottenham Hotspur. The match ended in a 2--2 draw and the sides shared the trophy for six months each.
Peter Withe scored twice for Villa, and Mark Falco twice for Tottenham, in front of a 92,500-strong crowd.

This looked like a good open game. I liked the comments made about Jimmy Rimmer and his goal keeping style / skill.

I was there. Slightly inebriated. We'd been the Swiss Cottage before the game playing "Musical Pints". Anyway... I thought we won 2-1 at the final whistle. No idea when Spurs scored their second. All a haze. We traveled to Wembley in a big van. Some of us drinking and peeing out the back door of the van on the motorway (not me). It was safe because someone held onto their belt when they were peeing. Sensible.

I parked up a short distance from the stadium and as I walked up I saw Spurs fan just like you - he was totally drunk - paralytic - his mate could not prevent him collapsing into a bush. He'd never remember the match let alone actually getting there.

I was there, sat at the foot of the stairs where the players go up at the end. I got Peter Withes sweat band at the end & my cousin got Ken Mc Naughts!, I look at this footage and think to myself, I have one of those in my loft! (still got it all these years on!). Happy days, a few months later & we’d be champions of Europe!, UTV.

Ray Clemence was going through a sticky patch then. First proper game for Spurs, he was struggling with England as well.

My sentiments exactly. I went to the League Cup Final against Norwich City in 1975. Never again, very poor viewing experience.

Ray Clemence played in eight Charity Shield matches,all but the first at Wembley.He was a winner in 1974( won on penalties),1976,1977(shared after draw),1979,1980,1981(shared after draw) and a runner up in 1971 and 1982.

That Villa team of Ron Saunders was superb but got pretty much unrecognised in England caps, too young too old was the problem & when he stupidly but understandably left a la Clough like, it then got dismembered & Shaw & other youngsters never reached that pinnacle again, as they just as a team all clicked together with a mercurial manager.
