The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter is the U.S. Army’s primary medium-lift utility transport and air assault aircraft. The UH-60 Black Hawk is a twin-engined medium lift utility helicopter. It is equipped with a single 4-bladed rotor and a single 4-bladed tail rotor. The basic crew compliment for the UH-60A is three; pilot, co-pilot, and crew chief. The titanium cored rotor blades are resistant to AAA (anti-aircraft artillery) fire up to 23mm and are equipped with pressurized sensors capable of detecting loss of rotor pressurization (damage). #Helicopter #BlackHawk #UH60
The A model was designed to carry 11 combat troops in addition to a crew of three (pilot, co-pilot, crew chief) and was intended to serve in utility, air assault, medivac, command and control, and reconnaissance roles. The Army began converting Black Hawks to the medivac role in 1981.
The UH-60A utilizes a dragging tailwheel landing gear system, with two non-movable main gear struts, and a rotating lockable tail wheel assembly. For operations in arctic environments, the Black Hawk can be fitted with landing skis.
The UH-60A is equipped with troop accommodations for eight, which can be removed to accommodate four full-sized medical litters. The Black Hawk can transport 11 fully equipped combat soldiers in an assault ready configuration, or 14 in a maximum capacity situation. Maximum troop carrying capacity is 20 lightly equipped personnel. The dedicated medivac variant of the Black Hawk can accommodate 6 litters.
The UH-60A is equipped with a reward sliding and lockable door on each side of the cargo compartment. The external cargo hook is rated to 8,000 pounds (3,630 kg.)
The ESSS (External Stores Support System) consists of two external wing-like assemblies attached to the airframe above the cargo compartment doors. Each ESSS wing is equipped with 2 removable pylons. The wings are rated to 5,000 pounds each and can accommodate a single 230 gal. the fuel tank as well as a single 450 gal. fuel tank (this gives the UH-60A an unrefueled self-deployment range of 1,200 nautical miles. Up to 16 Hellfire missiles can be mounted on the ESSS, and, when coupled with the capability to carry an additional 16 missiles internally, gives an armed Black Hawk the ability to re-arm itself mid-mission.
The UH-60A is equipped with two General Electric T700-GE-701 turboshaft engines rated at 1,560 shaft horsepower each. Internal fuel is stored in two crashworthy fuel tanks and totals 360 gallons. If ESSS equipped, the Black Hawk can carry two 230-gallon external tanks and can carry up to two additional auxiliary 185-gal. internally in the cargo compartment. The Black Hawk is capable of flying on one engine.
The UH-60A is equipped with VHF-FM, UHF-FM, and VHF-AM/FM radios, as well as encrypted IFF recognition system. For self-defense, the Black Hawk is equipped with AN/APR-39 (v) 1 radar warning receiver, as well as AN/ALQ-144 infrared countermeasures system and chaff/flare dispenser.
While not equipped with any dedicated weapon systems, the UH-60A is equipped with two pintle mounts (one each located on either side of the airframe aft of the flight deck.) These pintles are capable of accepting a variety of weapons, to include the M-60 GP 7.62mm machine gun, the M-240 7.62mm machine gun, the .50 caliber GAU-19/A machine gun, as well as the General Electric M134 7.62mm 6-barreled minigun. Utilizing the ESSS system, the UH-60A can equip up to 16 Hellfire missiles, as well as 2.75" FFAR (folding fin aerial rocket) rocket pods, FIM-92 Stinger anti-air missiles, as well as aerial mine delivery systems, such as the volcano and the M56 mine delivery system.
The UH-60L Blackhawk represents an upgrade to the original UH-60A Blackhawk, which entered service with the US Army in 1978. Production of the UH-60L began in 1989 with the conversion of existing UH-60A aircraft to the "L" standard as well as the production of new airframes. The First UH-60L was delivered in November of 1989. Over 600 have been delivered since 2006, and production is expected to continue until the UH-60L line is replaced by new production UH-60M aircraft.
Externally, the UH-60L is very similar to the UH-60A. Major improvements include the incorporation of a hover IR suppression system (HIRSS) that is designed to cool engine exhaust gasses while hovering and in forwarding flight. As with the UH-60A, the "L" variant is ESSS capable and rated for all of the same weapon systems. The external cargo hook limit has been improved on the UH-60L, which has a maximum lift rating of 9,000 pounds. Internal troop carrying capacity remains unchanged at 11 fully loaded, 14 high-density, and 20 lightly equipped.
The UH-60L is equipped with two General Electric T700-GE-401C turboshaft engines, each rated to 1,880 shaft horsepower. The "L" model retains the same internal fuel arrangements as in the "A" model.

I remember in 1975 watching bits of the "runoff" between the Sikorsky and the Boeing versions of what was then called the UTTAS while I was at Ft Rucker going to IERW (and, as we all NOW know, the Sikorsky won and became what we know as the UH-60 Blackhawk). A few (well, almost 10) years later the Blackhawk was my Primary aircraft and I was an Operations Officer and then a Platoon Leader in a Blackhawk outfit based at Wiesbaden Air Base in Germany, The Blackhawk was fun to fly..pretty fast and a bunch of power....My Platoon was the NVG Platoon so we did a lot of night work. So, the thing has now been around in one form or another for, what?....45 years and is still going strong! AMAZING to me...especially since I retired from the Army in 1991, having first joined in 1965. Note the UH-1 series of helicopters were active in the US Army from about 1959 and then phased out only a few years go! Oh....and it is STILL in service in many countries around the world in some form or another...ANOTHER AMAZING bird!!

I retired from The Washington ARMY National guard in June 1986. Nd the Blackhawks had not made it to our unit by that time. We were pretty happy with what we had, (I think only because we did not know any better). The Blackhawks are light years ahead of what we had back then. Wonderful birds.

aaaahh... very nice video. I miss those days as a 67T/Black hawk crew chief. My relationship started when I was stationed in Korea with the 2nd I.D. at Camp Stanley. 2nd/2nd Aviation Battalion. I got moved up from a "Phase" Mechanic to a Flight Company. Alpha Co. 2nd/2nd Avn Btn. Then spent the rest of my career at Ft. Bragg with a short gig with the 82nd Airborne division and then with Task Force 118 (18th Airborne Corp.) My bird was nicknamed "Ol Triple Nickel" because of her tail number. She got shot up pretty bad during Desert Storm but she was able to to be flown back to garrison with the help of the most talented pilots in the Army. Patched her up and still flew till we were told that the campaign was done. She got shipped back home and we took her apart and was analyzed by Lockheed Martin and put her back together and flew till I left the Army. She was retired 2 months later. I miss the comradery with the Infantry and Artillery units. These are the best machines ever built by man.

Ha! I flew the "triple 6" a.k.a. "demon" It was an EH-60 in Fulda Germany in 1989, back when there was a wall and fence and we wanted to kill commies. Years later, 2012ish it turned up in the Illinois National Guard, with all the EH stuff stripped off of it.

I too miss my time in the 2ID as a 68B. I was with 1/2 Attack Helicopter Battalion back in 1993/94. We moved from Camp Laguardia (closed and gone now) in Uijongbu to Camp Mobile in Dongducheon (TDC) across from Camp Casey. Many a Blackhawk T700 turbine engine had my hands inside it to bring it back to life! They were great times! After there I went on to finish my Army career at Ft Campbell 8/101st AVN Battalion 101ST ABN DIV AIR ASSAULT. Hooah! Army Strong!!!

I love Black Hawks. Probably one of the best helicopters. One of my favourites. I always knew Black Hawks can carry more than 11 troops. I also wonder why for rappelling, each side can have 2 ropes, while for fast-roping, each side only has 1?

@maddog2557 4 года назад
There are four rings in the ceiling, two on each side that the rappel ropes attach to. Hence 4 ropes, 2 each side. The fast rope uses a bar mounted to the ceiling with only two ends for attaching the fast rope. Hence only 2 ropes, 1 each side. The fast rope is 1 5/8 inch or 44mm in diameter. It is big and weights a lot so only two are used, and besides it is "fast" enough for government work.

@dallasyap3064 4 года назад
@@maddog2557 oh I see, thanks a lot.
@skyking2202
@skyking2202 Год назад
Old comment, but the difference is speed. Rappelling requires only one person on each rope for it to work, so getting 10 soldiers to the ground rappelling could take a full minute even with 4 ropes. In ranger units we stacked on the fast rope tightly spaced and could have the same 10 soldiers on the ground in seconds, leaving much less benefit to more ropes. Watch this video and imagine all these soldiers had rucksacks and weapons, and you'll see that finding space for the two ropes is hard enough, 4 just seems impossible. In my unit we always sat in weight order so the heaviest loaded guys were on the rope first. In Chinooks we used 4 ropes and it was just a human wave coming out the back.

You know, I've never understood troops jumping out of the back of a helicopter into the water. Why doesn't the helicopter just fly to the shoreline and drop them off there?
@chaosagent_0106
@chaosagent_0106 3 года назад
Not a military unit or anything but I could give simple deductions. One, there might Anti Air Units or placements that can take the chopper down so to ensure the chance of troops to getting out the chopper, because water can broke a fall, and to swiftly get the chopper out. Or two, so that the troops get out as possible and as close to the drop off
@dallasyap3064
@dallasyap3064 2 года назад
That's bcoz to avoid any possible hot zone or areas where they are anti-aircraft artillery (including RPGs etc) that can take down the helicopter. Secondly, it would allow more silent infiltration by the troops, bcoz the helicopter is away from any garrison or patrol areas. This jumping from helicopter into water is called helicasting, usually down by special operations or reconnaissance forces.
