One of the greatest Argentine artists and a vanguardist, no doubt about it. Extraordinary, magnificent composer. But, he was no virtuoso (neither as bandoneonist nor pianist) and his music, since the 1960s, was as much Jazz and Classic inspired as it was Tango or Milonga. They used to call that Fusion by the neologism "Buenos Aires contemporary music", back then.

Astor Piazzzola was already a bandoneon virtuoso since he was a child. At the age of 13, Carlos Gardel asked him to go on tour with him, but Astor's father refused because he was still very young. Unfortunately, on that tour, Carlos Gardel and his musicians died when the plane crashed in Colombia and Astor saved his life thanks to the decision of his father.

Hi Rob. Im gonna tell you a story about Piazzolla. In some time he was so hated by the conservative listeners of tango, that he ended several concerts in a fist fight, because he was a incomprehended genius and he believed so much in that he did that he wasnt afraid to punch anyone whos trying to bother him in hus shows. Still today some people critized him for his music. For the rest of us, with a good hearing, we love him. Im named my second son Astor for him

Piazzolla is one of my favorite musicians. He was one of the best bandoneon players (there are a few that were as good or better than him) but his greatest accomplishment was in music composition and orchestral arrangement. He took classical tango into a totally new direction, what he called “Nuevo tango” His body of work is immense, besides tangos which amount for the bulk of his music, he did soundtracks, and classical music such as the opera Maria de Buenos Aires and the Concerto for bandoneon and orchestra which I never get tired of listening (I even had it as my ringtone)

The bandoneon is a musical instrument (accordion) used in tango orchestras. The word derives from the first accordions of this model that arrived in Buenos Aires at the end of the 1800s from Austria and Switzerland, whose trademark was "Band Union", from where it was Argentinized into "bandoneon".

HI ROB ! ! The bandoneon is a wind musical instrument, free (or free reeds) with bellows from the concertina family (Konzertina in German), with a rectangular shape, square section and a particular timbre. Its original name in German is bandonion, but its Spanishization in the Río de la Plata established the word "bandoneón" to refer to the instrument in Spanish. It was initially designed in Germany as an evolution of previous free-reed instruments, such as the concertina or others. It is said that its use was initially as a portable organ to play religious music; hence its unique sacred and melancholic sound. When he arrived at the Río de la Plata at the hands of sailors and immigrants, he was adopted by musicians of the time and that is how he collaborated in the formation of the particular sound of the Rio de la Plata tango, becoming a true symbol of it. -WIKIPEDIA-

The "squeeze box guy" in the middle is Piazzola himself. He took tango to newer territories, perhaps closer to prog rock and jazz, since originally tango had a different kind of melancholy and was more oriented to dance in specific parties (milongas) and had a certain reputation, although it's always heavy on urban imagery. Piazzola changed the themes that ussually are refered on tango, very famous for it´s "hurt masculinity" subjects on its lyrics, while Astor, very focused on instrumentals, gave a different fly on the concepts that are found on his work. His instrument is the bandoneon, similar to an accordion but lacking the "piano" on one side. The accordion is an instrument more akin to "happier" styles of music, (you can find it in polkas, waltzes, south american popular "tropical" music, chamamé etc.) while bandoneon has a different sound and the majority of the development of its use happened in Argentina.

"Tango?" You asked....Well, that´s exactly what all Argentinians have been argueing about for the last 40 years! Disruptive Piazzola was like an outcast for the Classical Tango Movement, the traditional line so to speak. He was very sad, upset , half of his life because he couldn´t belive how his music could divide the movement he loved so much. Later on, he was recognized all over the world, hope that broght some light to his heart.

This is a Bandoneón. This is the typical instrument for Tango. It is a very difficult instrument to play, it is tuned one way when you pull, and in a different way when you push, so you must adapt your digitation differently. Astor Piazzolla was the best author of Tango and Jazz of Argentina, and one of the best bandoneón players. His hands was deformed for playing, his fingers were longer to reach every button of his bandoneón. He composed Tango in a very unique way, very Classical, and very Jazzy. Adiós Nonino, a tune composed for his Grampa gives me goosebumps. Violentango, Balada para un loco, and many many orhers are outstanding music and very profound poetry.

Hi Rob !! Astor Piazzola it's a great musician and maybe the most influencer composer for the musicians !! I recomended react to Concierto en la luna or Lluvia de estrellas del master Osmar Maderna , a great pianist !!
