Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
The Astra 300 was introduced in 1923, copying the layout, mechanics, and handling of the Astra 400 military pistol in a much more convenient pocket size. It was made in both .32 ACP (7.65mm Browning) and .380 (9mm Kurz), with a magazine capacity of 7 and 6 rounds respectively. More than 150,000 were made in total, as the gun was quite popular with various military and security agencies in Spain. The majority of production, however, went to Germany between 1941 and 1944. They purchased 63,000 Astra 300s in .380 caliber and another 22,390 of then in .32 caliber. Most of the .380s did receive waffenamt markings (WaA251), although not all of them. Production ended in 1945, with the gun being replaced by the improved Model 3000 in 1946.

In Spain there's not a huge gun culture (mostly fear). I love that there are channels like this that take the time and make the effort to research and teach us our own history

Agreed, i don't even own any guns nor even support unnecessary conflict. Sadly there's times when some people just don't even want to understand others and aggressive intervention is the only way left. I do however appreciate the engineering and technology of firearms, and now thanks to Ian i can appreciate their history too!
@rokorokero
@rokorokero 6 лет назад
Yes, absolutely. I don't believe in this idea of firearms (or any other thing, in fact) as "killing machines". Sometimes they are, saldy, used for that, but so are hammers, cars, ropes... Even the human body. To me firearms are beautiful pieces of engineering and, usually, historical artifacts that tell us about how the world has come to be the way it is nowadays. It's always sad to see how some people try to sweep under the carpet part of the history of a country out of shame, fear, political interest, ignorance... In any case, fortunately, here's Ian to save the day

I've still got one of these. I've got an Astra collection of sorts... A 400, a 600, the 300, and one that's a convertible 300 between .32 ACP and .380 ACP. Forget what they called that one... but they are pretty rare. Got several Astra revolvers and an Astra 900. Always felt Spanish guns and gun designs were under appreciated by the masses along with French designs and such. A fair bit of modern classic gun concepts and designs can easily be traced back to Spanish and/or French work.

Worth mentioning is the way the slide and frame are made from solid all forged and machined steel, just like the model 400 and 600. The time it must have taken to machine these parts is amazing by today's standards.

The Astra 300 & 600 pistols were not that rare in the 80s, 90s and early 2000s between thiefs, drug dealers and such; the 300 was common between old retired members of the Guardia Civil as was a small and light enough pistol in comparison with their Star B, or Star BM that later on became their service weapon replacing this much older ones, Some Star B and BM are still in service on the Guardia Civil and even, in small number, on the Policía Nacional.

During 1960’s up to the late 1980’s they were commonly found in gun shops In the eastern US, in some cases they were labeled as one of the “Saturday Night Specials” as an inexpensive alternative (as they weren’t a high status pocket pistol such as a Walther or Mauser or Colt) and far more common than something like an FN or other pistol) as not all Saturday Night Specials were cheap revolvers. In recent years, it seems as the supply of these and the Astra 400 have dried up. I wonder where they all are?

Andre Krumins, yeah, well maybe, but in the US, collections especially for somewhat odd handguns tend to have a LOT of change. In over 40 years of collecting and seeing how firearms change hands it’s just strange how thing come and go. For example! I’ve been looking for a real good Mauser HSC for over 25 years at a good price. Checking web auctions and watching gun shops in 4 states, they’ve been rare up until the last 18 months - now I’ve seen like 15-16 in the SE US, of course prices are pretty high. I wonder how things like Forgotten Weapons prompt people to go get Grandpop’s old pistol he brought back from WWII and sell that old Astra?

If you look alongside the right side of the frame and slide you will find two small vertical notches. It just so happens when these notches are lined up the slide will be in the perfect position to rotate the barrel. Yeah, I have an Astra 300 my father brought back from WWII. He also brought back 2 Lugers but traded them off in the New York Harbor while still waiting to disembark because he wasn't comfortable with the "Hair Trigger" on the Lugers. BTW, the Astra features a clean breaking single action trigger with a weight at break of 11.0 lbs and that was just peachy for my father.

As always, a very well researched and informative video. However, in this particular instance, I must point out a historical inaccuracy: regarding the Spanish Civil War, the loyalists were, in fact, the Republicans, and not the Nationalists. Indeed, the war started precisely with a military uprising by some army units, which were reinforced by the Franco-led colonial units brought to continental Spain from Morocco (by no other than German-operated planes). Hope you don't mind my well-intended correction, Ian. Hope you keep up the excellent work.

Alerta...
@montimuros2837
@montimuros2837 6 лет назад
Marina Pino Los republicanos eran fervientemente anticomunistas.

On all Astra pistols with the design like the 400 you have here, if you cock the gun, then take the mag out and set the safety on, the barrel is in the perfect position to remove the slide and replace the slide. No need to hold the slide back on re-assembly and try and find the exact point where the barrel can be rotated back into the proper position for the slide to work and close the slide. And yes I am a Master Gunsmith and have been one for 52 years. Love your channel.

Like many others, I have one of the 300s in 7.65mm Browning. Not only is it reliable and well made, but is heavy enough to be deployed as brass knuckles or a club. As you said, after the war (2) the pistol was revised as the 3000 and I am fascinated by the Falcon (4000). But only in 7.65mm. Good video as usual.

EAsy way to reassemble and get it aligned, there are two hash marks on the right hand side on the frame and slide, if you line those up and twist the barrel while doing so, it slides right back together easy.

Nice. As far as i know, most of these (and probably other small pistols) went to the Luftwaffe. Maybe they thought they needed smaller guns in the cramped confines of a fighter cockpit. The Germans seemed enamored of small pistols, possibly because every party official who had a uniform was entitled to wear a pistol. I think they had FN 1922's and others made for them in occupied Belgium as well, along with Hi-Powers of course (and Polish VIS 35's and other things in other places). Great video as always.

You can actually tell it was made by the nationals, because the republicas marked it using the basque name for the town: GERNIKA, wheeras the nationals marked it with the spanish name: GUERNICA. And a bit of history, I just visited Gernika and originally the objectives of the bombing where in fact the weapons factories and a bridge in the northern side (which could have been used by the republicans to flee into france), but instead colonel Richtoffen (commander of the air wing of the condor legion) decided to change the objective to target the population in order to demoralize the republicans, and also, precision is not the issue because the condor legion used the very precise junkers ju 87 ''Stuka'' to carry out the bombing. Also keep it up love the videos, Hope this reaches you well (given that this is an old video).
@ramjb
@ramjb 4 года назад
There were stukas involved in the bombing of Gernika. A handful of them. The larger number were level bombers though. And those couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from inside unless used for area saturation bombing. Keeping in mind that the Kondor Legion used even Ju52s as bombers, accuracy is not an excuse - it was a real consideration, because those planes had taken part in bombing raids before aimed at pinpoint targets and they knew all too well that, other than the stukas (which again, were a handful only), those weren't easy to hit with level bombers.

m I'd say more like 2.5. I'm from Santiago de Compostela, so I speak 3 languages, but most people from Madrid, Paris or Lisbon probably speak only 1 or 2.

1 or 2?

Unfortunately, it died back in 1999, but in 2008 an italian entrepeneur called Massimo Garbarino revived the company under the name "Armas Astra S.A" and bought all of the old Astra's patents.

Is that a grip safety in the backstrap? Also, it appears to have witness marks to line up to rotate the barrel during dis/assembly.

It is, it works the same as the 400 and 600.

Thanks! It seems obvious, but the unexpected is part of what makes these older guns so interesting.

Who hits dislike on one of Ian's videos? Legit question... Actively disliking Ian is like downvoting the sunrise. Or friendship and kittens.

I have one astra 300 from the 1st models wich I found about 20 years ago refurbishing a house. It's fully working and I have it stored in a safe in Spain as actually I live abroad. It has some engraving as 1923, fabricada en Guernica..so I assume that it's one of the early models (right now I can't check the serial number). How I could check the actual value of the gun? I also have the original leather sleeve

Of course being once chambered in 9mm Largo (9x23) reminds us of the fictional James Bond character, Emille Largo, so called to imply he had a large chopper. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x7hgPwyQUTc.html

At the time, Astra's products were very well made. Bordering on overbuilt. that aside- Germany could not produce sufficient arms for all it's military/police, and bought and impressed a large variety of foreign arms and material. E/g, the Polish Vis ("Radom") was known as the P645(p) in German service.

The Axis forces were allied with the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, and when the Nationalists won in 1939, it would make sense to buy weapons from Spain, as they themselves were already operating at full capacity during a war. Not a lot of countries would trade with the Axis because the US was on the Allied side, and getting in trouble with the US on trade wouldn't be great. So Germany buys from wherever they can during WWII, as long as the equipment works.

Well... In the early XX century Spain was making top quality shotguns, pistols and revolvers, mostly overbuild due to the high standars of Spanish troops at the time and the civil market, after the civil war with the autarchy the quality dropped to "well, at least it shoots and doesn't explode" (except our beloved CETME), and now... well, Santa Barbara builds cheap quality G36 and the rest is imported mostly

Did I understand correctly that this will NOT fire unless it has a magazine in? Nice safety feature to keep someone from firing off an "empty" weapon. Are there any other weapons with this safety?
