Playing on Hard/Hard with Astragoth. I wiped out that minor ogre faction in the mountains to the east via razing his settlement immediately after completing my starting region. I did this on purpose to avoid meeting/being adjacent to Grimgor so early. It worked. I did not meet Grimgor until around turn 17 or 20 and by then he had already decided to pick a fight with Kholek + his Norscan vassals and Cathay. He has yet to declare war on me and appears to be losing ground at turn 40.

I found the way that works best for me was: Turn 1 recruited a taurus, then destroyed it's building to get magma cannons, I then conquered the 2 ogre settlements to the east whilst recruiting a second army, exchanged the settlements for military access and a defensive alliance with Kholek. Kholek starts fighting Grimgor. I go around via zhar Nagrund picking up hobgoblin and magma cannons from other army, then conquer Grimgor's settlements back to Kholek.

Honestly, I've noticed that astrogoth is somehow being underrated. I've played more than a few campaigns with him at legendary difficulty vh battles; and he's SO fucking strong on the battlefield. I've played as skarbrand and as vlad, and neither of them felt as oppressive as astrogoth has had after turn 5. Wherever you send this man the assignment will be completed.
@slimthug166
@slimthug166 Год назад
His starting army is astrogoth, a bull render hero, a bull render unit AND because of the building by turn 2 a great Taurus. Plus the starting blunderuss units; by turn 2 or 3 you already have a full province under control, a very strong army and no immediate enemies at war with you.
@Wrathful_Scythe

Astragoth, for me, was kind of a challenging start. Everyone around me declared on me and I had attacks coming from all cardinal directions. Astragoth himself was an unstoppable nightmare but a single army can't defend all sides and I didn't have enough money for more armies. Even Norsca wanted a piece of me in the beginning. The worst was Grimgor and Greasus joining forces to kill me, while keeping Azhag and Lamia at bay on the other side.

Something to note is that drazoath’s defeat trait is insanely strong to farm, 10% settlement income factionwide if the lord is on the map. Because the chorfs don’t have supply lines, you can end up making thousands upon thousands of gpt from this. So in my opinion, play astragoth, farm draz’s trait for like 100 turns (he should also eventually get 1 turn wound time), then confederate when you’re ready to spam out kdaii destroyers in the super late game.

@@redcrown5154 I find astragoth more fun as a LL than Draz tbh. That part is subjective. However, the bonuses to armaments will be capped by your raw material infrastructure which you need money to build up. Astragoth/Zhatan don’t have as much of this limitation, so even though Draz can make more armaments, he realistically does not. Also the -10% cost to upgrade is nice but again it’s even a 20% bonus to armament production (which is what draz’s bonuses kind of compound to), probably won’t overshadow the extra income.

@TheRewasder97
@TheRewasder97 Год назад
After a couple of campaigns with Astragoth, I fell like he has the best faction and starting area. That global extra public order just can't be overlooked in his faction, and while the other guy gets more research speed, I don't think it compares with the increased influence that Astragoth gets. Your objective is to reach the top of the tower ASAP to get the confederations rolling. His starting Area is also incredibly safe. At the north you have the tower in a choke point, which covers chaos marauders. You don't really need it as no one up there is going to mess with you unless Kislev starts Rocking and comes Knocking. To the south you have a province with the vampires in the capital, which isn't very hard to deal with, which makes you have another tower in the other chockepoint, this time covering against the winner between the Slayer King and the VampirORK. Both hate you, but they hate themselves more, so while one lives, you're safe. In fact, hope that the Slayer wins, as he hates the vampires more than you. So anyway, as long as you get a garrison building there, you're covered. The rest of the province is in the hands of a minor skaven faction iirc, anyway you can get those provinces easy, getting your south covered by another chorf faction. Now, your main threat, is Grimgor. I highly recommend you deal with him asap. You can either deal with him before going to the second province or free it having beeing recruiting another army. Anyway I recommend demolishing the bull ogre building on first turn and use those weapon materials to build yourself an artillery building. The magma cannon is a Godsent and probably your only chance at beating Grimgor. Anyway, don't be like me, who let him maximise his yellow skills, and then was incapable to stop him. Like seriously, he gets to the point of one man doomstacking gobbo armies. Gobbos buffed by the Legendary Hero. And two hit killing all heroes and lords. He gets obscene, don't let him grow. And allways bring blunderbusses to fight him. Also gobbo archers. They do lots of flame damage quickly, and can destroy, completely annihilate troll units with low armour. I vanguard deployed them in firing range, three units per troll unit, and they never reached melee, dying to the first salvo. I can agree that Drazoath's campaign is probably more interesting in how hard it is and all that, but Astragoth is simply stronger, in basically all the levels that matter. Not to mention he's completely busted as a warrior, in battle, being able to mop the floor with absolutely anything that faces him, except Grimgor.

Astragoth was my first Chorf campaign too, but I flowed a bit differently. I never actually went after Grimgor myself until way later - my first major ally was Kholek, and he took and vassalized all the norsca factions to my north and northeast pretty quickly, building up quite a power base to contest Grimgor, who mostly focused on the surrounding ogres instead of me. When he finally did try launching an invasion, I was at least defensive allies with all the other Chorf factions, and we dogpiled him from all directions right away (even Ghorst opportunistically tried invading from the south, but by the time my southern-sweeping army met him, I just continued my momentum and started taking his gains). I actually ended up focusing on the west and southwest, taking out Ahzog and the dwarfs. Funny hiccup is that Wargrove of Woe was in the middle of invading Ahzog at the same time, so I had to fight off Drycha to claim the province, and since she kept sending armies over, I had to march over and burn her forest down to put an end to them for a little peace (leaving her last settlement to Kislev to finish off). Another weird hiccup is running into a hostile rogue army called the Monstrosities, after I took Karaz-a-Karak, which is a pain in the ass, as it consists of 10 Beastlords and a ton of high-tier monsters, and is duplicating itself (now there are three of them!). Barely fended it off as I built an emergency army and rushed Karaz-a-Karak to tier 5 with a garrison building, and rushed a secondary army over just in time. Mors was barely holding his own, as I did ally with him too, but Kroq-gar has marched his way that far north now, so that's another impending threat... I will say, Astragoth's conclave influence gain is great, as I can take 2/3'ds of the conclave seats for great bonuses. Another thing not mentioned to note about Astragoth, is he has Wallbreaker, so he can punch holes in the side of settlement defenses and march an army through really quickly, and combined with the conclave tower bonus of starting any siege battle with broken wall sections and Gorduz's ability to make all Hobgoblins have stalk and vanguard, garrison walls have very little effect against you...

Definitely emphasize taking out Grimgor - during my Astragoth run I cleared first province and then smashed the vamps to the south quickly, but then ended up in wars with Skarsnik in the southwest, Imrik in the south, Grim in the southeast, and Kholek in the east. It made for a very tough campaign (VH/VH) - I personally found that defensive structures were pretty expensive for what you get for the chorfs too, and couldn't be relied on to hold a side long enough to knock out one of those enemies. That's actually the main benefit of the Backstabber - use him to create a cheap hob army that you can shore up a flank's defenses long enough to send Astra to burn out some enemies.

I guess it doesn't really matter once you're some turns in anyway, but I feel Astrogoth has a start with a lot of potential. His starting settlement has Iron, and getting to tier 3 is super easy. He starts with Renders and a Taur'ruk hero which is awesome, he starts with the Render building built, and since you can't recruit more units from it without getting more armaments you can demolish it on turn 1, and use the armaments you're refunded to build the artillery building, which means real early magma cannons. Then on the last building slot you add the Chaos Dwarf recruitment building, and a few turns later you got an army with Renders, Magma Cannons, a Castellan and more blunderbussy. Oh and Astrogoth himself, who's a beast. Of course all of this evens out as it progresses, but it's a great and fun start anyhow. Renders is sort of a mid-game unit I feel with the other Chaos Dwarf lords, one you can get either by focusing on it and missing out on other stuff, or get once you've got the wizards, artillery and so on going. Starting with 1 dual weapon variant means you can ignore ever getting another until its time for doomstack number 2, and instead get everything else sorted real quick. And getting the armaments flowing is easier with Astrogoth with the Iron in his capital, meaning you'll get to all the fun stuff quicker(-ish at least? Haven't played too much of the others I do admit, I'm at 1 trial run and 1 actual campaign with Drazhoath and 3 campaigns at turn 90-ish with Astrogoth) Drazhoath probably has a higher potential overall, but Astrogoths start and subsequent frequent power spikes makes it a really fun campaign. And the major settlement to the east and south both have gems, which is crucial to a healthy overflowing Chaos Dwarf economy. And his army paint scheme is black, which looks fuckin' amazing. Oh and he's so cute movin' his li'l ol' boots across the campaign map, especially when you speed up your factions movement to Fast specifically in the campaign map camera settings.

I don't know if it's because I just rushed getting seats in the tower and unlocking the next tiers or if his bonus helped a lot, but as Astrogoth on legendary I was able to reach the final tier of the tower without ever having a seat usurped because they seem to go for empty seats in the highest tier available. I was playing very aggressively and had a lot of towers too even if they were tier 2 or 3 there was a lot of value to doing that so the way I played might've also been why I had so much influence to throw around.

Best part of this campaign is the location. Little tip, turn 3 go east and take the ogre settlement. Sell it to kolek's vassal for quick gold and 2 new trade partners. From there deal with grimgore quickly before the southern vamps and orcs attack your province or go wipe out the south first.

Don't think this is the best CD faction, but Astragoth is my favourite LL. He has access to Ash Storm and Kindleflame for incredible amounts of flame weakness. A great combo that I used for the final battle was to have Astrogoth run around by himself, get the enemy blobbed up on him and cast Ash Storm on them which allowed my Dreadquakes (which had Flaming Attack from the Banner of Eternal Flame) to delete entire units in one shot while tanky Astrogoth took minimal damage.

Do you have any inclination to go back and redo some of the earlier reviews in this series? I think about 10 videos in, you got the format nailed on these videos. If I go back and want to see the Ku’gath for example, all you really had to say was it’s a slow defensive campaign. I’d be interested to see how you tackle the start, especially with the chords next door now and Imrik West and Cathay to the East.
@cosmicowl42069
@cosmicowl42069 Год назад
Just a protip, on turn 5 there are a shitton of Cathay convoys that all cluster near the Silver Pinnacle. You can defeat all of them on the same turn and get 20k+ gold as well as a bunch of xp. This is way easier than taking on Grimgor - and honestly there's a good chance that Kholek will deal with Grimgor for you. Azhag is more of a threat to Astragoth than Grimgor is.

@RandomIdiotGS
@RandomIdiotGS Год назад
What I recommend is almost exactly what Legend says, although it may slightly differ on your difficulty: Rush Grimgor, it MIGHT be fine to just leave him at one settlement (depending on difficulty), especially if you get an Non-aggression pact/Defensive alliance with Kholek's faction to see if they expand south. This gives you an opportunity to let Kholek and Grimgor fight one another while you can keep raiding with weak armies. Any outside threat is just going to run into Grimgor and/or Kholek. Reason I say this is because an occassional goblin army from Grimgor and even an XP-starved Grimgor who has fallen behind because you razed most of his early settlements isn't going to give you much trouble, but his frequent attacks might make him a good source of XP for you. That said, this is a bit of an ideal situation and the Kholek situation might play out differently, so, getting rid of Grimgor entirely might be a better option on higher difficulties. It's up to you. In the mean time you could resolve issues near the Volary (you might end up taking out Vilitch and he might be somewhat easy to scare into a peace treaty). Use your weak armies to keep raiding enemies on that side of the map. Then focus your main army/armies with good units towards Azhag. Claiming Silver Pinnacle helps because you may funnel Azhag/Dwarfs enemy on that side. Make sure to make it a tower and try to build it up with reasonable priority., so you can start pushing south. You really don't have a need to rush South and can just take your time defending your own lands and slowly expanding, making sure you prioritize building up cheap raiding armies early on so you can keep up Labour intake. Midgame is when you can start expanding more aggressively and snowball powerful armies that the AI is just not going to be able to deal with due to all the buffs you're going to be able to stack on it as CD. I don't consider Astragoth's spells much of a priority. The diplomacy one and the blue/red lines are definitely good to get early to get that extra manageability in diplomacy as well as get the most out of your unit performance. After that I would prioritise his spells.

For his item which provides 30% physical resistance. I have used the item that gives him barrier and regen and wiped out 40 units of dwarves. You have to be careful with calvary but he is the perfect one man doomstack to dwarves and you don't even need him to be that strong. The damage that reduces the barrier affects the passive ability.

@Rakshiir
@Rakshiir Год назад
One thing you have to be really careful about with Astragoth in my opinion is that he is a melee lord without a mount, so his mass isn`t great but he is WAY faster compared to Chaos Dwarfen infantery. You need to be careful not to get him ahead of the army to much and getting caught. He is tanky and can do alot of dmg as well, but getting out of a fight isn`t always easy depending on what spells you might have for example. I agree on your ranking. I think Astragoth has very good traits and a very good skilltree that makes him unique, and he is propably the fastest to confederate other factions in the conclave mechanic. His starting position also isn`t bad. While playing him I rarely had to fight multiple fronts unless I wanted to, because not that many actually declared war on me, the north is kind of secured if you don´t attack them, you have one chaos dwarf faction below you after killing your starting enemy. Killing Grimgor after that does secure you a position where you can more or less decide where to attack then. However, in comparison I also think that the Ashen is stronger overall. His traits and skills are really damn strong. But then again, confederating the other legendary lord in both cases is pretty good since they both have very good skilltrees even outside their faction bonuses. Besides the Black... he is really way worse then these two

I still think Astragoth is better as a LL, but I agree on the faction being weaker (actually, 5% per tower is huge) The biggest advantage of Astragoth is something I think Legend glossed over, that is, he has both the Lore of Fire Passive and the Ash Storm spell from Lore of Hashut. This is the Chaos Dwarf wombo combo that absolutely deletes anything that dares stand in that Ash Storm, as they suddenly take like 45% extra damage from everything, which is huge. Then Astragoth smacks them in the face, making them flammable, we are now at 70% fire weakness on whatever he fights in the storm. At that point, 2 Blunderbusses will delete a Dread Saurian in like 3 volleys (actual number(I think)). And while he's spamming Hell Hammer, HIS ENTIRE ARMY IS DEALING EXTRA DAMAGE (except for Bull Centaurs, sadly). The fact he brings the Chorf combo, Kindling (or whatever the lore of fire passive is called), and the storm in a compact package with 5000 mass and 60 speed with insane resistances makes him absolutely insane. Most importantly, you save on characters, not requiring any other spellcasters in his army, further amplified by the Greater Arcane Conduit.
