In this video I'll explain naming conventions and astronomical catalogs. I'll tell you what all those Greek letters mean, how the stars were named, who discovered all those star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae, and what some of the most important of those references are in your star chart or star atlas.

Amazingly well researched piece, complete with a French monologue and costumes. This could be the basis for a college course.

HAHAHA! Fantastic! I loved the beginning. We ALL know what you mean. This is the absolute BEST, brief, and to the point, explanations of the star++ catalogs ever done. A precious resource. Congratulations to and thank you. Very impressed you even have the Interstellarium book. After a mere 40 years, and while having most you speak of, some of us still love and rely on the simplest, Wil Tirion, compilations. But again, muchas.

This video is so very timely for me. I was looking at ny star wheel the other night and besides the more prominent objects, I i couldn't make heads or tails of it. Now you've given me a good foundation to begin to understand what I'm looking at. Thanks again and Cheers 🎉💯🙏🏿✔️🙋🏿👍🏿🎯👋🏿😎

I have a few famous star charts. I invested much time and money printing my own down to magnitude 16 for my 10" although my telescope's magnitude limit is 14. I also printed a few finder charts. Of course I laminated them. These charts were and continue to be well worth the time and trouble to make them. I printed the entire northern hemisphere sky and approximately twenty percent of the southern hemisphere. They have served me well for over twenty years. Just thought I'd share that. I love all of your videos.

Yes. I love that and that it tells you what size telescope you need and provides simulations (I think that they are simulations) of what the objects might look like. It's a great two volume set.

"You have your work cut out for you..." I'll pass, thanks! 🙂 Stellar nomenclature gives the impression of a derailment - there must be a better way to run a railroad! (But you're clearly very knowledgeable about it.) By the way, Dr. Becky recently did a video about the imminent nova of - however it got its name - T Coronae Borealis. The video is, as usual, excellent in its research and presentation, but I'm afraid the good doctor put her foot in it when she announced her newest sponsor. You can read all about it in her comments section - even some of her most loyal fans are looking askance at her.
@tsulasbigadventures
@tsulasbigadventures 3 месяца назад
Walter: I looked at T Coronae last night and it still has not gone Nova. I'm ready to record this historic event when it happens. I had nothing to do with the weird naming. I don't know anything about Dr. Becky. I don't watch her.
@waltergold3457
@waltergold3457 3 месяца назад
@@tsulasbigadventures Dr. Becky is a legitimate astrophysicist - at Oxford, I believe - who has a huge channel and does an excellent job explaining the current research. Lately she's done some illuminating videos about the so-called "crisis in cosmology," the conflicting data from the rate of the universe's expansion. But apparently she doesn't follow the latest news of RU-vid itself - otherwise, she might've thought twice about her latest sponsor.
@waltergold3457
@waltergold3457 3 месяца назад
@@tsulasbigadventures Tsula, I forgot to mention one other tidbit of gossip from the world of RU-vid astronomy creators. You may remember me remarking on a huge channel called Astrum, run by a creator named Alex, which offers consistently credible, highly produced content but which had fallen, surprisingly, into the disreputable habit of clickbait titles and thumbnails. The upshot is that, a few weeks ago, Alex himself appeared on camera, for the first time, announcing some unspecified "change" in direction (and asking his viewers to support him and his not inconsiderable staff on Patreon). What struck me particularly was Alex's uncanny resemblance, in looks, voice and manner, to the actor Thomas Middleditch, who starred in HBO's SILICON VALLEY as a young tech entrepreneur beset by temptations and pitfalls. It's a wonderful, binge-worthy series and, I've heard it said, a completely accurate portrayal of the real Silicon Valley. I don't know what's afoot with Alex, but perhaps his enormous success gave him his own case of "RU-vid fever."
@tsulasbigadventures
@tsulasbigadventures 3 месяца назад
@@waltergold3457 Walter how do you have time to watch all these shows, movies, and RU-vid videos?
@waltergold3457
@waltergold3457 3 месяца назад
@@tsulasbigadventures You may not want to know. 🙂 Seriously, though, I've been between jobs since the late unpleasantness - more to the point, I've been trying for a new path, one more fulfilling than the drudgery of legal documents - and in the interim, I've become quite the RU-vid aficionado. In fact, I have a paid subscription. It's a wonderful platform, in many ways. But I still have a little time for myself - I'm currently waiting for the studio production of my latest song. Possibly, I've written another winner - likely not as good as my Hiawatha song, and in a completely different genre (and technique), but still pretty good, I hope. 🙂
