I try to make notes of the eye piece and camera settings used that had good results. Viewing Saturn and Jupiter with a 10mm and certain camera will look over or under exposed when using a different eyepiece or Barlow lens or camera setting. Or figure which eye pieces seem to match closest to the FOV for the type of camera you’re about swap in. When the default 16mm lens looks great and then your camera mimics 8mm, it’s easy to lose that bugger.

It's much easier if you use a flip mirror instead of changing from eyepiece to camera after I did that about a million times I brought my flip mirror and it made keeping my object in my field of view Nice. And taking pictures or videos of Jupiter or Saturn became More precise keeping my frustration intact.

Love this video. I have a Celestron 8 inch Edge HD on the CGEM II mount and good to see I'm not the only one with problems finding planets. I also have a little Orion Starseeker III reflector scope on an alt-az mount for times when I want a quick setup for planet viewing. I have a much easier time with that.

This video gave me relief, because when I use the barlow I can no longer find the star. So I don't need to be sad about my telescope. Thanks for sharing 🥰

I am glad that you left in all the alignment, focus challenges in your video. I go through this and get frustrated as I don't know what I am doing wrong. Looks like this is a typical experience and I shouldn't be so hard on myself. One thing I did do was purchase a motorized focuser. I primarily did it to avoid shake when I tried to focus, but an added benefit is that the software provides a number indicating the focuser position. When I focus on an object, i record what that number is and what lens I am using so the next time I go to that object I am pretty close to focus. Did you use an eyepiece (besides the barlow) for this session?

Hey Mike. I've looked a many videos and tutorials online, and your videos are the best I've found so far for what I'm looking for. I'm looking at purchasing the Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 EdgeHD with StarSense for some night gazing and photography (I haven't committed just yet), and I also want something to photograph and/or video the April 2024 eclipse. I photographed the 2017 eclipse using a Sigma 150-600mm lens using my Canon t3i, and it turned out OK. I'd like to video it in HD but preferably 4K, and also get some good photos. I've since bought a used Canon 70D, and would like to buy a telescope. Was curious whether you were planning on capturing the eclipse, whether I should try to use my smartphone for video with a Celestron vs a DSLR vs whatever thing that is that connects to the telescope and a computer via USB, and what all you recommend I should purchase. This particular telescope looks like it will auto-align and stay on the sun for me, but I'm not sure what to do. Any advice? And do you have Discord or do you have a way to chat? (I'm also in Texas and plan to travel westward to view the Eclipse.)

Doesn't the 8se Celestron doesn't it track

Hello MIke, Before you tried a Barlow, you just used an ordinary lens. Do you recall what lens you used? Was it a 25mm, 15mm or 10mm? And being a rookie in astronomy, I have noticed when mounting a Barlow, for what ever reason, lots of difficulty retaining a good focus on an object. So mostly I don't use a Barlow. I even have a Televue Barlow think an expensive one would do it and make focusing easier. But for me right now as a rookie, I don't rely on a Barlow. I do have a wealth of many lenses, so I really don't use a Barlow to achieve the lens I need.

when you get saturn centered in the eyepiece, does the 8se begin to automatically track it, or do you have to do something to get it to track?
