May I suggest for your city location that you add some dew shields to the end of the main scope and the guide scope. Stray light can reflect off some surfaces and cause artifacts and gradients. Keeping your lenses and mirrors more in the dark could only help. Thanks for sharing and congrats on your new home!

I have a 1600MC pro cooled which, thankfully, doesn't have any dew issues. I use this in conjuction with an optolong L Pro filter. It does a reasonable job in Bortle 5. My friend has a narrowband setup which is MASSIVE ballache.. Each filter requires a slight refocus, each filter requires a minimum of 2 hours on a typical target, then almost a whole day of stressful processing... I was always expecting my OSC to be a stepping stone to NB. Now, after seeing your results and considering my friend's woes I might just take the plunge... This filter seems to get some of the NB benefits from OSC.... Whilst I appreciate that one has little control over the colour from each emmision line, I would be interested to see how it performs on more colourful subjects

Great before/after comparison. Had no idea this filter cost that much. But the difference it made was remarkable. I concur with others that the initial images were affected by ice/condensation on the camera sensor. Even though your humidity is low, rapid, deep cooling will cause even minute amounts of moisture to condense then freeze. Love your videos and the quality of the images keeps getting better and better.

The “creepy crawlers” with 2 legs are the kind I worry about when at a remote site. But that’s where the sky is darker and bigger.

I don’t know your system but this past winter at 8,000’ in New Mexico (where the humidity is low) I found my guiding was decreasing in quality one night, also the imaging began to develop a haze . I went to check the two scopes and both had the first hints of frost appearing on then. In addition to humidity one needs to be aware of falling temperatures. So it’s good to know the dew-point for night in addition to humidity to help anticipate whether dew or frost may be an issue. My cmos and dslr cameras are sealed enough that I think OTA dew is a problem first, but I don’t know your equipment. This is just a thought. Nice videos

I recommend using a xiaomi 360 security(infrared) camera to monitor your scope during the night, that's what I do and all movements in the yard will send you a notification :) When I watch TV or anything else when I'm imaging I have it open on my iPad so I see everything that happens 👌

Great video and experiments. I have the ASI1600 and have not had that foggy dew problem yet - knock on wood - even living in CT. Someone mentioned in your comments about the rate of cooling, that might make some sense, I have my scopes stored in my astronomy shed so they are at outside temps already also I use APT which does take a while to cool the sensor. - Cheers Kurt

Good morning and happy New Years. I have a question. Yesterday I ordered the Radian Triad Ultra filter for fast telescopes. My telescope is a F4 instrument. Is this filter the right chose? Or does the filter only work with fast telescopes that are F3 and below? Thanks

Nice video! Thanks. But a tip for polar aligning, don’t buy a Polemaster. Completely unnecessary. Just use NINA’s 3 point polar alignment plug-in with your regular imaging camera. Works perfectly and costs nothing!

Nice result in the end! Did you find out what was the problem that caused the artifacts? I am wondering if -20 degrees was too much and it could have been the reason for those artifacts. I am interested in this filter but it will have to wait, i recently bought the Altair 26c (a.k.a. 2600pro) i am waiting for the camera to arrive. Wish you health and clear sky!

Looks like ice on the sensor itself. I have the ASI071MC Pro as well and have had exactly the same thing, especially when taking the camera from a warm environment (house) to cold (back yard) and then cooling quite rapidly. I have solved by removing the desiccant tablets and heating in a microwave to dry them out before replacing while still warm. I have also found that the ASIAir cools the camera too rapidly and so tend to do this manually in a couple of steps. When using other software such as APT or NINA to control the camera, the cooling routines there cool much slower over 10 - 15 minutes and this seems to work much better and doesn't lead to ice. When I have had ice before I have warmed back up to +5°C, held there for a couple of minutes, and then re-cooled in 5°C steps back to the -10°C that I usually run at. Hope this helps.

Fantastic video and image! I'm a big fan of the Triad and Triad Ultra filters and regularly use them in the San Diego area. These filters offer some nice options and opportunities for imaging. I've no experience with PI but Astro Pixel Processor (APP) has specific algorithms for these types of filters allowing you to process and output the data as color, mono, Ha or OIII. Good stuff. Regarding your 071MC Pro and the artifacts on your images. How fast did you cool the camera to the target temp? I have the same camera and have seen this as well. What I found is I was cooling the sensor to quickly. I typically run at -5 or -10 and if I make sure to cool it slowly (13min or more), I don't introduce the distortions. Cheers

the asi071 camerar does need time to defrost, it is a well known problem but easily managed, make sure the dessicants are refreshed and in cool conditions allow it to cool down in stages. Dew heater on the camera on. Love the image

Try to dry the air inside the CMOS Chamber with the screw in dryer cartridge. For my QHY it is a aluminium cylinder with a thread that can be filled with silica gel.

Make sure you don't turn the cooler on first. Turn the camera on. Then set the temp to 0 with 5 min time length. Once it get to 0 then go to -5 with 5 min. Again push it to -10 with 5 min. That's it, don't try to push it down any further. Rarely I image -20 with ZWO ASI 071. BTW, great filter video and good image! I will be in Vegas not the next week but the following week for work for couple of days!

So since you can share raw image data in theory you could have 4 scopes on the same target each with a different filter then combine data taking far less time. Am I correct because an array would be awesome?

Hello ! The baader mpcc iii needs 55mm of distance from the t2 bottom to the camera sensor, asi 071mc has 17.5mm backfocus, so you need 37.5mm spacer !

This looks terrific. When I got interested in astrophotography I started looking at RU-vid videos to learn more about the hobby and what equipment to buy, and I've decided to buy this exact set up you call have. I'll be buying everything on the 6th of March. So please include a link to this filter so that I can buy it, because I'll be filming in my backyard, and I been looking for information on a light filter to pollution. And, again, the nebula looks fantastic.

Imaging from home, or more appropriately a nearby park will be the only option I'll have for the forseeable future, once I get my telescope. The joys of not owning a vehicle to get around. On the flipside though, if I'm willing to walk a tad further (or I suppose just hire a ride) I can easily make it over to a nearby observatory, where one is allowed to set up their own gear in front of it, and it's reasonably dark over there since it's further away from downtown.

Hi, sorry for the real late coment, had the same problem with a sensor after cleaning it, had to clean it a coulpe of times and check after each clean, the are like paths od the cloth or brush used in the sensor, I could even identify the direction of the cleaning ...

For that noise pattern are you using dithering? It help with a “ random noise” cmos have.

@@davidemancini7853 We actually did not achieve the perfect backfocus since the video, we might try 22mm next time and see how it goes. In total I believe it's supposed to be 55 or 56mm.

071 Users suffer from frost problems, but that is normal because the sensor is larger. Because of the way it is cooled, and the chamber isn't sealed in a vacuum or Argon, dew or frost are likely to accumulate. That's why zwo added the anti dew feature. Next time just don't turn it off, if you are pushing the cooling hard.

The results are mind blowing for bortle class 9. With all the excitement when you opened the filter, were you breathing heavily? I know I would be. Maybe that's where the condensation came from. Just kidding. But maybe try removing the filter and blowing it and the sensor with a can of compressed dry air.

Another comment for you. Never leave your telescope out overnight with the scope pointed towards the sky and uncovered. Best case scenario you will get some dust and dew on your primary lenses. Worst case you might accidentally leave it in a position that the scope ends up pointing at the sun at some point and you come out to a cracked primary mirror or melted mirrors/components!

This biggest challenge I have had with the 533 is when pointed at bright objects or if a bright star is in the frame i get reflections really bad on the sensor. At first I thought this was my image train. I took out everything and had it at prime focus and still had the really bad internal reflections. Creates a pattern of square boxes all around the bright object.

Look like a walking noice or bayer noice to me if your test shot taken without dithering while guiding. Try to enable dithering in your guiding may solve it.

When I saw the price, I was like "holy shat"... that's expensive. I would think for them it's worth the investment. They use to have to drive out to the Nevada desert, some two hours away for them. The filter will pay for itself in the gas they can save!

Tim is right, it depends on what you usually do. I would say that for us, it is worth it. We also always think about the long term and, in this case, we would pick the Ultra over the Tri-band despite the huge price difference.

Awesome result. It's great being able to image from your backyard. I do most of my imaging now from it. Nothing beats a dark sky but you gotta love the convenience of the backyard. I did a video as well on this filter. You can see my result on IC1396 with and without the filter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q5TMmpZYMno.html It worked great. I found the Triad had less orange cast to it than the Optolong which was a good thing. The light pollution is a problem for sure. Maybe chat with your neighbour about shielding their lights? Invite them over to see the telescope at night and see what you do. Doesn't hurt to try!

I agree that it's nice to leave the scope set up, just in case the next night is also clear. I remove the cameras also and throw a big tarp over the rig to make it less obvious what it is and keep off the dew. You probably have room now for a giant attack dog, but kitty wouldn't be thrilled.

Phew. I need a tracker first and foremost. I can take upto 13 second per image without star trails with my widest lens. That's not enough unless it's a bortle 3 or below sky.

We started out with a DSLR and Tripod without tracking and were able to get some great images of M31, M42 and others (we have a video about it) but we indeed had to travel to a Bortle 3 zone to get these. From the city it might be possible with such a filter but we haven't tried it yet!
