Hey everyone! Today we are comparing the visual differences between the 3 and 7 nanometer narrowband filters. It is highly recommended to get these 3nm filters as they will greatly improve your imaging results, especially in a severely light polluted environment.
View and purchase the 3nm filters here...

Oh the money pit of astrophotography!!!! Thanks for some great info Ryan! I'm a fellow Chicago Suburbanite by the way. Western Suburbs.

This was very helpful. I have a set of 3nm filters on order, and the side by side really defines the differences. Cheers!

You've convinced me to save up for the 3nm filters.

Thanks Ryan, nice comparison. Though I think a minor fact should be clarified. With all the parameters (brightness of the sky, exposure time, gain, offset, etc) the same, one would expect that the images from the 3nm filters to be dimmer than the 7nm filter as more light passes through the filter and hit the sensor. When they are stretched however, there should be more contrast between the sky glow and the nebulosity in the 3nm filter because the narrower bandwidth cuts off more skyglow, so you would see more nebulosity coming out from the 3nm results.

You can certainly see that the stars aren't as bright with the 3nm filters

Nice comparison. Convincing evidence for 3 nm. Would have been nice to see final color image from both.

Hi, nice vid thank you. A few observations: 1) the stars are tighter with the 3nm, which is a nice added benefit; 2) you seem to have diffraction spikes in your brighter stars. Perhaps check for pinched optics?; 4) Apparently a 5nm Ha filter is preferable for some nebulae because of the NII line (658.4nm). Questions: a) What brand was your 7nm filters? b) Did you make adjustments to the comparison images? I would think the 7nm image would have been brighter overall but with less S/N ratio compared to 3nm.

Great stuff thank you for sharing. Can I please ask what method of stretching did you use on both images?

Signal is the same. Noise is higher in 7nm version. But, this is no brainer. Are these filters from the same company?

Which 7 and 3 nm filters are these? I mean which company (are the 3nm Astrodon,Chroma etc). Also I noticed that for Oxygen and Sulphur images the 3 nm has less stars than 7 nm filters. Is it the function being a narrower bandpass for 3nm than 7nm.

Those were taken on different nights ("a long time ago" in the case if the 7nm filters). What about the moon phase on those nights? Was it the same? The moon can wash details away like in the examples you are showing. Seeing could have been quite different from one night to another, especially if you imaging near a body of water (as your intro suggests). Sorry bro but your comparison is not worth much.
