Stan Getz was my cousin. I didn’t meet him much as he was a lot older than me, but he was the famous one of the family. He was given a toy guitar as a kid and played it all the time. My aunt brought him up as his father passed very young. He really was something to listen to on the sax. And with Astrud there singing, they made beautiful music together. RIP Stan & Astrud.
At that age, it is impossible to think that any of the people involved with this song, had any idea that they were about to serenade timeless greatness.
@@samuelvance5674 Yes, it broke up the marriage. She also was not a singer and was “enlisted” at the last minute as I recall. But look what happened in the end
Hey there! I came across your comment and I just had to reach out and say hi. Your perspective really caught my attention and I would love to get to know you better. Would you be interested in chatting sometime? Looking forward to hearing back from you! 😊
Astrud, a Brazilian house wife, came to America because she spoke more English than Tom or João and their phrase book English. Astrud's father was a language professor and she spoke several languages. While recording, João asked Astrud to sing some verses in English. She didn't have a professional voice, however the voice and the music had a haunting dream-like quality and the rest became musical history.
Stan Getz was my cousin. He was literally given a toy sax as a little boy. He brought Bossa Nova to the US from Brazil. Very, very under appreciated. He was always on when he played. He did dabble way too much in drugs and alcohol and cancer caught up with him. RIP Stan & RIP Astrud.
Rest in Heavenly Peace Astrud Gilberto thank you for all the beautiful melodies you left for us your beautiful yet haunting and soothing voice will be sorely missed but never forgotten ! I am playing this song in your memory as i type this ..... thank you !
Thank you Astrud Gilberto for singing this timeless beautiful romantic song Girl from Ipanema,we will miss you and always remember you in our hearts....❤❤❤
I played those records so much you could practically hear both sides at once. My adoration was for Stan Getz -- see the adoration on his face in the 1964 version. They were together some years. RIP Astrud, such beauty of voice and soul.
Stan Getz was a horrible human being. He made sure she didnt get any royalties for this song, he was an addict and a bully. But if pedophile Michael Jackson is still adored by millions of Americans, than I dont see any problem with people putting Getz on a pedestal.
i was born in '57 so the first time I heard this song I was a very young adolescent boy...but even then I found it hauntingly beautiful and had a very emotional effect on me with respect to my growing attraction to girls.
I came here because James Taylor, in Colbert's Questionnaire, said if he could only listen to one song on a desert island for the rest of his life this was the one song (and performance, with Stan Getz) he chose. YES!
One of the events in my life as a boy that led me to learn Spanish and work for 20 years in Latin America. I even made it to Rio a few dozen times. A magical place still. Final Tropical Bohemian refuge for one and all and certainly filled With all flavors of women sights sounds and smells. And oh the sunsets.
I love Love LOVE the phrasing in the Portuguese lyrics she sings with the ZDF, it seems to have a bebop sensibility to it. Glad to have heard this version. I often wonder if singers get sick of songs they sing a billion times. I can't tell here --- she seems to enjoy singing it here, probably for the billionth and 1 time for this appreciative audience.
Cracks me up how people get carried away by bossa nova. This is something you had to live with day after day, not just by watching music on RU-vid - i was lucky to live in Brasil, from Europe back in the 70s, Tom Jobim, Toquinho, Vinicius...the new Bossa Nova of the 80s. It's something that if you were lucky to witness, it will stay with you for the rest of your life...
I was 14-15 when Astrud was casting her spell on me with that sexy feminine voice along with Stan Getz on sax. Yeah, had a strong school boy crush on this wonderful song stylist. One of a kind.
I'm soooo saaaadd 😥 I just found out today 6/8/2023, after subscribing to her channel, that she passed on 6/5/2023😥😥 I've been in love with her voice since I was 5 yrs old😥 Im now 63. It's good that she left many, many songs to cheer up the world, because we need that cool bossa nova laidback sound to sway to, in a time where everything is sooooo uptight and chaotic. R.I.P. Astrud, your voice was soooooo beautiful ❤️❤️

I loved this song in the 1960’s! This was part of the Bossa Nova movement! But the best part was Stan Getz, THE BEST SAX PLAYER OF ALL TIME! What a talent!
Echo's from my childhood. I remember this song playing on the radio presented as a new composition. I was a very young 5 year old boy. I used to hum this repeatedly throughout my childhood. I have Asperger's and this song helped me to focus on the task at hand. Used to drive my parents insane.
Me admira não encontrar um único comentário de brasileiro aqui. Linda música e linda voz. Linda artista, que nunca ganhou o devido reconhecimento no Brasil.
Rest in Pace, Astrud! Your voice was absolutely instrumental to create a wonderful musical experience that has remained in the first place of my preferences for almost 60 years.
David i like your comment i was 21 years old when this very fine classic came out , now im 78 years old i still adore this song , this darling girl is so very beautiful Jane x
As a child of the sixties I remember fondly coming home from school. And listen to that wonderful sounds of Astrid Gilberto with the sound of Brazil in her voice pure magic
This is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing this and I appreciate the fact that the lips are in sync with the song. She is so classy and feminine!
In her own words.. became a sorry tale of how a shy young woman was exploited, manipulated and left broken by a male-dominated music industry full, as she put it, of “wolves posing as sheep”.
A Beautiful lady with a beautiful voice ❤ with her velvet smooth timeless voice God will make her his personal singer sitting on her very own cloud ☁️ 🙏☁️🙏RIP lovely lady 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Essa versão é tão delicada q parece aqueles bolos finos deliciosos confeitados q agente olha e fica com dó pegar um pedaço de tão bonito q é!!E uma suavidade aos ouvidos sinceramente! 2:56
