For non guitar players, what she's doing isn't easy at all. She's having a full on conversation with abrupt interjections that have no rhythm and is still playing without missing a single note. Simply spectacular
I'm not sure what planet you're from, or what video you were watching, but in THIS video that is NOT what's happening, and there is NOTHING very difficult about what she's doing. That's not to say it isn't entertaining, it's just not what you described AT ALL...
@@philsurtees I think he meant the bit that's happening right before she started singing, she's already playing but still talking, that is a very tricky thing.
Caterina was born in Paris but her family is italian: father Giuseppe and mother Maria. She recorded songs in 12 languages and dominated 6: french, italian, spanish, english, germany and sweden!!! She is retired today and she is 90 years old (14, january). She is, really a fantastic artist and singer!!!🤗👏👏👏
Well said. That charm disappeared in the late 80s. Sure, there are little pockets of it here and there, maybe it'll come back, though sadly I don't foresee it in the next 20 years, hopefully I'm wrong!!!
I am brazilian and this video makes me feel proud of my country's culture. Also she is talented and her portuguese is really good. Their chemistry give me chills!
Can I ask you something? i need a new friend to talk with me about the English language I am Arabic and I need to learn English very well every day just 10 minutes, please
Logan Borsa thank you for your enlightenment on that, although I think you’ll find that Caterina IS Italian as it is stated on Wikipedia, also I don’t believe I mentioned what language in particular that she was singing in. :)
the whole person makes me melt. The humor, the talent, the charisma, the way she was on international stegs, the partners she involved. Great. ... I love her.
@@joeozwalt6713 I looked up a list of singles and the songs I recognized from my childhood (in the 70s), were: 'Ganz Paris träumt von der Liebe' ('54), 'Ein Schiff wird kommen' ('60) and the German Versions of 'Quando Quando' ('62) and '... Yellow Polka Dot Bikini' ('60). All very cheesy stuff of course ...but i think as a little kid I liked it and nowadays I can respect it musically.
And then she had enough of the German Schlager totalitarianism and did what she could do best. Jazz, Swing, Samba. I remember a TV show way, way back in the mid or late 1970's where she appeared after a longer absence from Germany. She performed with a very well-reputated swing orchestra (unfortunately I forgot the name) - and her art made my parents an me speechless. Never ever had anyone in this then so narrow-minded country expected anything like that from her who once had been everybody's darling (in the 1950's/60's). She even had her own show on German TV in the early 1960's, called "Bonjour Catrin".
Ganz grosse WAHRE Kunst !
As a guitarist, she is an absolute amazing guitar player. She’s having a conversation without missing a note, and in general the chords she’s using are hard to play without messing it up, and she didn’t even mess up once. SHES SIMPLY A GUITAR LEGEND 💪🎸
I'm from Brazil and it was so nice to hear them sing Bossa Nova. Even in Brazil, country of Bossa Nova we almost don't hear anymore. It's a pity!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Bossa Nova
It is a national treasure of Brasil !You are correct, I've have friends in Rio de Janeiro and have visited 10 times and have yet to hear it. Very sad...
her Portuguese is just amazing. She even has the accent of people from the Rio region ... it is a precious thing to hear this here in the middle of 2020.
I grew up in a home in the 70s and my parents had 2 of her albums, they were very cultured and exposed me to her, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, also Charlie Parker, Mozart and Bach, etc❤
What happened to our world? Its sad, where is all this intellgence gone? The smart and spontaneous self improvisations, the artistic genius and human interactions that spark creativity and originality, where is it? A golden era of performers, more genuine maybe hearts and minds, a current of art and a generation of dreams and hopes connected to human spirit, we have to take lessons again...
And inches from Dean who was wildly charismatic, charming and a versed pro. She ran a circle around Dino and nobody was more delighted than he was! I love how they are touching and she is still all powerful.
It's amazing: two people in the same place at the same time thinking about the same things in harmony. That's a human experience. "Muah!" (kiss my fingers)
Every time I watch this clip I can't help but wondering how easy Caterina Valente makes playing this Bossa tune seem - however there are mostly tricky chords she's playing - while she jokes around with Dean Martin and always finds the right beat to sing along with the melody. Great artists indeed!
I thank my father Cesar Caceres Lima for teaching me to appreciate and play this beautiful music what bossanova is, a kiss and a hug to heaven dear father
Def one of the world's greatest female entertainers. She could sing like Ella, tap dance like Eleanor, play the guitar, and do comedy like Carol but in seven languages.
That's the power of Dean's insistance on not rehearsing too much. Rehearsing kills spontenaity, and Dean recognized that spontenaity, including mistakes, gave life to an act.
@Tournel Henry The context should have established we are talking about comedy in general, but comedy sketches, specifically. Music is a different beast entirely.
My God, Caterina Valente might not be very well known in 2023, but make no mistake about it folks - she was the REAL DEAL in her day. Caterina was fluent in several different languages and beautifully sang in all of them - it was simply that easy for her. Brilliant lady!
Caterina Valente was one of the most gifted and professional artists we ever had visiting this country. What a jewel - she could brighten a dark room by just walking into it.....hard, if not impossible to find this kind if sensitivity and ability to play and sing at this level nowadays.
@@skarbuskreska she was fantastic on her own, I agree. I liked that Dean treated her like a shining star and put the spotlight on her. Not all hosts do that. It's obvious to me that he had a lot of respect for her talents
in the sixtees, seventees and even the eightees, she was a superstar in germany. She had her own TV show and performed in many movies... I growed up with the music of C.V., so thank you Caterina.
My first time too, but I knew the song, when I saw the song's name in English (the original in Portuguese is "Samba de uma nota só", I thought they were going to sing it in English!
I'm grateful that she was so fluent in English that there was no hesitation or discomfort on her part, dealing with Dean being unpredictable. The results are hilarious.
MAMMAMIA!!!
Whose Italian? Dean was born in NYC. Catarina was born in France to Italian Circus family, but she strted singing with a German band the Kurt Edelhagen' Band. Which led to a recording contract with the German Co. Polydor. She was a citizen of the world, but extermely popular in Germany. She spoke 6 languages so she could be from anywhere.
