You are a very rare person on RU-vid who will actually admit his mistakes for all to see and then make it right. I never saw somebody actually do that. First of all most RU-vidrs don't read the comments or skim through and give a few one-word replies. I never saw anyone take the advice of a commenter, then admit their mistake for all to see in a video response! That act reflects the depth and strength of your character and shows your willingness to learn even when you already have a mountain of knowledge gained through experience. I see how excited you get when you get a project fixed, you smile and still get satisfaction from your work even after repairing thousands of boards. God bless you and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

It makes me smile every time he smiles when he fixes some device. Even though he is an expert at his field, he still gets excited and satisfied of taking something away from the landfield. I am a hobbyist technician myself and it brings me joy every time I fix something too. What a feeling!

Thanks for this concluding video. That blob helps for modular debugging. If you see HP G1,g2 series there are several blobs which helps to disconnect a whole module without removing the components .. this way you can test each module separately.

Since when do manufacturers design for troubleshooting at board level? I dont see HP doing this type of work, they just send a replacement, do they actually save electronics pieces or just recycle?
@Nailzy1985

@@scientist100 It makes it easier in the refurbishing centres and lowers the amount of training required for technicians. Most replacement parts are refurbished by third party companies / technicians.

We can all miss things from time to time, especially when they are microscopic. Just shows what a great community we have here. I can manage basic soldering, I have never tried microscopic components though. The biggest thing I take away from these videos… my ASUS laptop could stop working at anytime for no obvious reason 😂

Great spot viewer! I use such solder blob links in my designs, they are very useful(and free) but always try to position them so they are not next to something that may be removed and inadvertently unsolder it (as it’s invisible with no component left behind). I guess large scale manufacturers don’t expect others to be messing with their product so don’t concern themselves with others trying to fix them (usually without info!) they want you to buy new which is against all eco and money saving mentality. Keep up the great work Alex (my Alexa just chirped up.. no Alexa, I said Alex! Lol technology sometimes!!) 🤐

Brother, yesterday I wanted to write that, you should take this fault as a challenge & should solve it. So in future, you can easily solve it. I forgot to write that comment yesterday. Thanks to your subscriber that he/she pointed out the exact fault & you paid attention & finally solved it. Love to see your vlogs. So much to learn from you. I have one question, don't you get android phones for repair ? I never saw you repair any android phones.

Well, I guess I was 'partially right', that's where I thought there was a component missing. Unfortunately My internet service here is so bad that I can't use high resolution in videos so it was very hard to tell if there was one there or not. But that's where I thought the problem was because I could see the traces so I knew it was important that it have something across it to complete part of the circuit. Glad you found it, it only made sense that it was an issue in that general area since it came in working, and the port is the only thing you worked on. Good Job! 👍

Essentially the question boils down to another similar question : why do 0 ohm resistors even exist??? I mean why do you need a resistor when a trace is fine? I remember asking myself that question a lot in my student days, I thought : this is stupid! When you really think about it, the 0-ohm resistor is a genius invention. A solder blob like that (solder jumper) is basically a FREE 0 ohm resistor (not that they are really expensive, but 1 million times $0.001 is not negligealble). Here's what you can do with it : - back in the day, multilayer boards weren't a thing, and drilling vias required expensive machining tools, and cost extra money. Back then, the "holy grail" of board layout was to achieve a no-via design on a single or double-sided board. And 0-ohm resistors help : they allow you to "cross" a trace with another trace without a via. Pretty neat right? - troubleshooting / debug : sometimes, we are not sure if we will need another 1k resistance in series, so we put a 0-ohm resistor and if need arises, we just update the BOM : the PCB doesn't change. - multifunction boards : sometimes, a single board is designed to perform multiple functions. Where on one is a 0-ohm resistor, on another one is another value, or nothing at all (open-circuit). - unit testing : sometimes, you need to perform unit tests on a modular PCB. In that case, you isolate that submodule on the board by disconnecting it from the rest (connected via a 0-ohm resistor). Then you test and validate your submodule in production state without affecting the rest of the board. All in all, it is a very useful tactic.

If you're interested in that commenter's name, it's an American saying "OL" (typically spelled out without caps and with a generalized meaning of old, in a joking-ish way). So the name was basically implying "Old Dirty" = "olDirdey". In the southeast it's not uncommon to hear someone reference someone else as "Ol' Boy". Appreciate your content, don't let the bad stuff overwhelm the good stuff!

When I add blob in pcb's I tend to do the opposite: the copper trace is here by default and I can cut the trace to measure current (or other purpose). I find solder blobs unreliable in production and if I really need to have a trace open then close, I add a zero ohm resistor.
