Today LEO takes a look at the ROG Crosshair VII Hero WIFI motherboard - a new high end board from ASUS loaded with all the bells and whistles most enthusiast users could ever need. He was given a specific performance BIOS from the team at ASUS - but it does some clever (sneaky?) things - and LEO isn't sure how he feels about it. Let us know what you think.

There was no droop, the voltage the processor required for 4.015GHz versus 4.15GHz on all cores was less, hence being lower. The board handles voltage incredibly well and it's recommended not to even bother with LLC due to the Auto setting faring so well.The reason why it is higher during idle is because of the singular cores occasionally boosting to 4.35GHz, which you'd have no chance of happening without those kinds of voltages. Simply PB2 & XFR2 doing their jobs, tremendously well at that. It's basically Boost 3.0 for the CPU. I would also highly recommend using HWiNFO over HWMonitor for accurate voltage and temperature readings, the former recently included an update that identified the best to worst cores in the Ryzen processer (similar to what Ryzen Master does with the Gold/Silver stars).
@KitGuruTech
@KitGuruTech 6 лет назад
HWiNFO is unhappy monitoring the Crosshair VII Hero, seemingly due to Asus' use of Dual Intelligent Processors, or at any rate one of the extra controllers that Asus has added. By default HWiNFO won't monitor VRMs temps and when you enable monitoring the system becomes very unstable so while I actually used both HWMonitor and HWiNFO at different times the latter was not stable enough for reliable benhcmarking and would have given a false impression if used in the video.

HWinfo gives me a VRM reading. HWinfo seems cock-a-hoop monitoring my C7H. The people in the C7H overclocking thread at overclock.net are mostly using HWinfo and some of them really know what they're doing.

Mine does the Same CH7 + 2700X at stock or Auto OC settings the Vcore on the full 8 Core Load is lower than the single core loads... my combo gets 1.36+/- @ 4.175mhz to 4.2mhz and when on single core loads it gets something around 1.48v to 1.52v @ 4.35. So is not vdrop its just the CPU needing more Voltage to get that 4.35mhz on the cpu and needing less for the 4.175mhz.

One of the strengths of the Hero VII is that it supports dual M2 NVME drives with both slots supporting PCIE 3.0 x4. For some people this may be the deciding factor.

The 4 pin cpu power is for future expension.. So it could be that the new generation ZEN needs to have bigger power requirements.. So its not stupid / overkill why there is a 4 extra pen. Other manufacturer board do have the same.. Some have 2x 8 cpu power inlets.

The VRM heatsinks get hot (very hot if around 1.4v) to the touch so they do seem to be transferring a decent amount of heat. HWinfo shows the VRM to be around 50 degrees (under heavy OC load) so a good job is being done one way or the other.

Great review Leo. I have this motherboard (haven't made the build yet as I'm waiting on a case to be released). WIth this new BIOS amping the voltages somewhat, do I need to be concerned with my CPU's life being shortened? Thanks!
@KitGuruTech
@KitGuruTech 6 лет назад
It depends. If you use the regular release BIOS at stock clocks then no as it runs at a very low 1.25V. If you plan on overclocking and/or have the performance BIOS 8601 then yes, up to a point, but only to the extent of any overclocker. 2nd Gen Ryzen draws quite a lot of power and runs fairly hot. If you were to crank up the Performance Enhancer option and really push the CPU cores hard I could imagine you might hit problems in the long term. When all is said and done you're talking about a CPU that costs less than £300, rather than a £1650 Core i9 so the absolute worst case scenario isn't really all that bad.
@MiddleofKnowhere
@MiddleofKnowhere 6 лет назад
Thanks for the response. I think I may not run that BIOS then, but go with 0601 as stated further down. I don't want over push the cpu as it will serve as my only gaming/streaming/rendering/design/everyday machine. I'm mainly interested in cranking my ram from 3200 to 3466 (maybe even 3600) while letting speed boost do its thing. I will be doing a custom water loop at some point while starting off with the Corsair H150i Pro. Overclocking seems fun, but the risks are there. :)

What's this 8601 performance bios? There's nothing even mentioning it on the Asus website. I'm running 0601 and it didn't offer any stock performance increases over 0509.
@KitGuruTech
@KitGuruTech 6 лет назад
Leo here: Now that's a very good question. When I was sent that version of the BIOS by Asus I rather hoped they would offer it as a Beta so you could choose 0601 or 8601. I wonder now whether it shows how Asus is thinking about future BIOS releases. Because I was unsure what was going to happen I made a bit of a song and dance in the video about showing the BIOS versions clearly so there was no shady work. As you are a paying customer, why not ask Asus support that very question? feel free to link to the video and/or mention KitGuru and tell us how you get on.

Between this motherboard and the X370 Crosshair Hero VI, I chose the former for 2 main reasons. 1) Price - the price of the Crosshair VI vs the Crosshair VII was a savings of approx. $135 CAD (the Crosshair VI being $229.99 at the the time of purchase vs the Crosshair VII being $364.99). 2) # of USB ports + PS/2 ports on the back I/O - the Crosshair VI has 14 USB ports (including USB 3.1 ports) and 0 PS/2 ports vs the Crosshair VII having 11 USB ports (including USB 3.1 ports) + 1 PS/2 port. The PS/2 port being a completely useless for me. I'm pretty sure the X370 Crosshair Hero VI will serve my needs just as well as this new X470 motherboard, just at a better price and the inclusion of 3 extra USB ports. Considering AMD's AM3+ 990FX, the high-end motherboards for that particular chipset never gave you the option of video ports - even though they could use everything from an Athlon to a FX CPU - and I loved that it didn't have ports that I didn't need or want. Why is it that only 5 /28 motherboards available (X370 and X470 combined) only have this option? While I know some folks will point out that you could install an AMD APU onto anyone of these 28 motherboards, who in their right mind would put a sub $80 APU/CPU into a high-end motherboard?
@TheeMahn
@TheeMahn 5 лет назад
Only reason I am considering it is Dual NVME. PCIE 4.0 I do not care about. I love the thought that people think overkill for dual NVME. I build operating systems and have over 100 Terabytes of space. Disk I/O is hard for me to turn my back on. Why not a Threadripper or Epyc? I would have to unload AMD stock to even think about that. Gen 3 Ryzen is just around the corner and would wake that board up.

I have this board paired with a 2700X and 32GB (2x16GB) at 3400 - its a beast and it looks spectacular as well. I'm running BIOS 0601. For boot I am using a 960 Pro 512 in M.2_1 (the bottom slot) and have a 1TB 960 Evo in SATA_6 1 for general storage. No issues booting or loading OS... Like the cat below I am letting CPU boost do the overclocking. I am getting better performance all around vs setting a manual overclock. I did tweak my mem timings a bit but that't it. It's a winner as far as I am concerned.

Hi i just wondered what brand of ram your using i'm getting a replacement board the first would not let me install windows on any drive thanks
@delta9k
@delta9k 6 лет назад
I am using Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4, CMK32GX4M2B3200C16. It's not on the QVL but it's working and I was able to over clock to 3400. Though realistically the performance gain over the 3200 speed is negligible. I originally started out with GSkill F4-3466C16D-16GSXW (4x8GB) at 3466 speed but I was having serious stability issues. I would boot fine but had a lot of crashes etc . If I dropped down to just 2x8GB for a total of 16GB I was fine with the GSkill 3466 (on the QVL but only for 2 dimms) but, I wanted 32GB. Fortunately I had the Corsair kit already so swapped it in instead and it just worked. After checking out der8auer's video "ASUS CROSSHAIR VII HERO - Everything You Need To Know! X470 In Depth Review" towards the end he explains memory compatibility and what speeds you can expect with SS or DS dimms and 2 or 4 dimms. It seems the max target speed I could have expected out of that GSkill kit 4 Single sided dimms was 3333 or minimum target of 3200. So I chose wrong with buying that particular GSkill kit for use on this board. You should check out that video if you haven't. Lots of good stuff like Leo has, about overclocking using the performance options in the bios vs traditional multiplier. Another good collaborating video is from Level1 Techs, "Story Time: Ryzen 2700x / 2600x Thoughts on Latency, Memory and Improvements" Good luck with the new board.

There are others who discuss the topic and are much more qualified than myself. Might I suggest taking a look at der8auer's video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RZRjoeyz4Z0.html ) about 11 minutes in is where he starts discussing over clocking and utilizing the XFR boosts vs manual over clocking. The whole video is really a deep dive into the board and I recommend watching the the who video, especially if you have one of these boards. Level1 techs also has a vid or two the one I am thinking of in particular I think its actually titled something along the lines of NVME raid ... but Wendell side tracks a bit discussing the Precision boot and performance enhancement features. If your looking to just do some old school over clocking Jayz 2cents also has a overclocking vid - all these sources have good information that you can apply. It's interesting to me anyway the different approach you can take with Ryzen plus and overclocking. Cheer's!

I can't seem to get over 1800 Cinebench on auto settings with the latest 0804 bios. Using the level 2 or 3 overclocking with performance enhancer I can easily get over 1800 but system stability is all over the place, randomly crashing in games. I'm assuming this is happening because of the vdroop you mentioned and it's starving for a tiny bit of voltage? Not really sure how I feel about this board after having it for a little over a week.

Yes, I really love the board now that I got it dialed in. The issue, like many run into with Ryzen, was ram instability. I'm using 32GB of G.Skill B-die ram (2x16GB) and this particular set have been known to need more voltage than the stock profile but I was unaware of this at the time. So once I bumped them up to 1.4v and tightened the timings some more, I have had zero issues with crashing. Everything has been really rock solid since I ironed out all the gremlins.

Isn't it better to have too many features rather than looking for them if your the high end 10% of users. I still get miffed that they don't have 6-8 of the 3.1 type 2 connections rather than what is basically 3.0 on this and other boards. I am a high user of these connectors. I will keep waiting, one day the motherboard manufactures will realise that there are many out there that want the fastest transfer rates rather than old school 2.0. Times and expectations have moved on. When they get Thunderbolt actively in AMD (yes I know there are some patent issues to cross) I agree there should be clear identification of what each Motherboard is designed for the various CPUs out there.

This motherboard is great for overclocking specifically for 4K editing, streaming, and 3D rendering but I wouldn’t recommend anyone to buy it if all you do is game. This is a creationist board in my opinion and I use it with my Ryzen 2700x with 1080 ti for video graphic design and max overclocking witch is possible to get to 4.35 ghz but you need a top of the line cooling system which can get it to the max boost as long as you have a 3200mhz ram card minimum which can be overclocked to run as a 3400mhz card which will help get max potential. Also the 2nd most expensive motherboard but a awesome buy in my opinion. Also 1.43 voltage suits it best and can get it to 1933hz underload with a min of under 70 degrees Celsius but overclocking it max can shut the whole system off without proper cooling but to take true advantage of this board you need high end cooling and and very good power supply but it works like a dream with stock overclock too.

dubb well you obviously need to educate yourself on the benefits of overclocking.

Newbie question, would this be compatible with my ryzen 3800x
@ecregan95
@ecregan95 4 года назад
I'm trying to figure out the same thing as well... as far as I can tell it is compatible but will require a bios update which can only be done with an older generation (1st or 2nd) amd chip. So in order to run 3rd gen, it will need to first be updated using an older chip. However, it seems it's possible that the manufacturer may have updated it previously before retail, meaning it would be 3rd gen ready out of the box. Not sure if this is the case, though.

I suspect that you will also want a high wattage PSU something like a 1.5KW PSU.

Seasonic Prime Titanium 1000W is plenty adequate. This is CPU testing and we were running below 250W, but even with the 1080Ti loaded we weren't drawing 500W.

Robin Ardis no. You should be looking at the ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero which is basically the same board just with the intel socket.
