I bought the laptop for the exact reasons you have mentioned. I needed a powerful portable desktop equivalent setup. Got the G15 5800x rtx 3070 1080p laptop for £1699 as it was the only one available. Its simply amazing for the price. Honestly blew me away. I did upgrade from an Acer to be fair. I don't mind the extra fan noise that comes with a powerful laptop. And bypassing the lack of a mux switch via an external 1440p monitor is an ideal solution for enjoying the pure understated performance.
The lack of mux is only a disadvantage when playing high fps games like overwatch right? Meaning, if you cap games at 60fps, you wont notice a difference? Or maybe you have an exemple of a AAA game that greatly profits from using an external monitor through usb c
@@TheAmanor123 you are correct. There is not much of a visually noticeable difference in AAA game fps but certain FPS games like fortnight, COD and APEX get a big boost from disabling optimus.
I bought this laptop back when 30xx series was about to come out, for 1299 (Intel version) with the 2070 super from Walmart. I wasn't sure if I was going to regret it, but at the price I couldn't wait. I'm glad, because I haven't seen anything close to it for the price yet. It's a great laptop. Wish the screen was a little brighter, and the trackpad sucks, other than that it's sweet!
It is really powerful I keep mine with the forced resolution at 4k..I play everything in 4k and Ultra High on all gaming options and it doesn`t even feel it no matter the game..runs amazingly smooth..
Thanks The Everyday Dad! I bought this exact model on June 8, 2022 and paid $260 more ($2060 Amazon via 3rd pary seller). It's hard to find this model and 2022 models are $2600 at a minimum and Scar 17 are $3k to 4K depending on display quality, mainly, and other specs. I am mainly looking to do some deep learning debugging on a local laptop, while I continue to run main training online in the cloud. It's gotten really tiring not being able to run any training or small debugging locally. The price point is really nice for me. The only thing I wish it had is QHD 240 FPS screen with better color pop and at least 500 nits brightness instead of 300 nits. As far as looks and keyboard, I prefer G17 vs Scar 17 both 2021 and 2022 models. Thanks for your personality showing through. I enjoyed your review. Please keep it up.
If you really want it, you can buy. I also bought the strongest version, despite that I living in a poor country, and can earn only the 20% of a normal German, or English worker. That is normal here.
Just got the G733 strix scar 5800H 3070 RTX 17.3". Superb performance plays every game on highest setting easily. For any football manager enthusiasts, this breezes through it like nothing I've ever witnessed. If you can afford it and find one, buy it.
@@kimi_wmmt8709 yep just ordered that one too. rtx 3070 is whether out of stock or being sell with overprice above msrp. laptop going the same route like gpu availablity now😅
For the oculus you need to put ovrserver_x64 under ultra performance in the windows graphics settings, otherwise It’s just using the integrated graphics. Check armory crate to make sure you are using dedicated graphics. It’s got nothing to do with the usb-c ports bandwidth which is more than enough. I have the strix scar 15, 3080 running half life alex at 3k per eye at 80hz flawlessly. Also minimizing the window on the desktop showing half-life alyx VR viewer seemed to boost performance even more as I think it’s bypassing optimus.
bought one with 3060 and 32gb ram (my regions option same price), turbo mode time spy score 9069 (graphics 8968, CPU 9688 more than you, same cpu...) ONLY thing I don't like is right speaker has vibration problem with speech (cortana, you talking, podcasts) but works fine for music (1y perfect warranty might fix?). Screen is AMAZING! keyboard too
For VR with the Quest 2, try using Virtual Desktop, a wireless solution. It might solve the slow USB C if that's what the bottleneck is. I use Virtual Desktop for my Quest 2 and PC all the time and it works great.
I hear that this laptop suffers from coil whine/noises. Even if it is initially ok, after a week or two playing games that noise begins. Can you comment? You wrote "a month later". Did you use the laptop heavily and did such noises start? Fan noise is what I can accept but not coil whine/noises unfortunately.
Just ordered mine! 32gb ram! I got a bunch of accessories too. My apartment is too small for desktop. I can put in away and save some room. So this is convenient!
I am currently looking at the ASUS ROG STRIX (G713QR-HG051T) : AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor 1000 GB SSD & 32 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 8 GB 300Hz Seems like the only difference between this one and the G17 in the video is the Ryzen 9... Sooo from what I have seen in different videos this is not a big deal at the end of the day.
@@kiranjotsinghmalhotra Well, both are 17 inch laptops as well. I just bought the one with Ryzen 7. I am not paying 1200 USD just to get a RYzen 9 instead of Ryzen 7.
All new Asus laptops have that annoying quirk, but I finally got it on my g15. It’s a problem with Nvidia Optimus and can be fixed by disabling and then immediately re-enabling the AMD Radeon Graphics in the device adapters. Also make sure all oculus programs are assigned to the GPU on Nvidia control panel. Those specific programs you can find by looking up the issue online. It is annoying but at least there is a work around.
Damn I ordered an scar 17 and an g17 but none of them were delivered. I ordered them at different companies but both lied with the delivery date. They said it would be delivered in 1 week. I ordered them in January. Still nothing.
5800h vs 5900hx? Doesn’t seem like theirs a big difference at all if you’re not over clocking, Is there something I’m missing? Also since I’ll be playing in 1440p, I think the difference between the 5800h and the 5900hx should be even less.
Got the same. Biggest complain:. Stock cpu temperatures (85-100) AMD says its suppose to run hot (I don't know) anyway you can disable the turbo mode (there's some videos on the internet) Armory crate : fans don't kick in unless you go manual or it's like 95C +, wtf?
Turbo mode = overclocking. That means higher temperatures. Instead, use Performance mode, which should be much cooler. Conversely, you can adjust the fan curve and have them come on more quickly.
Same in Croatia, i paid 2250 for 15" with wors screen. Look for Lenovo legion 5 pro, it came out in last few days and is better in almost all aspects when it comes to components and inputs. Gonna return my G15 and try to get that
If you’re using the Oculus Link cable, the Rtx 3000 series are not currently in the supported list of gpus. Have you tried connecting using virtual desktop as a work around?
@everydaydad should I get this or the razerblade 17? I make music so the cpu power/memory is what I need. This is a few thousand cheaper than the razer
Hey as a new dad who works from home I really appreciate your reviews. I'm in a rabbit hole. I have an $1800 budget, do graphic design, GIS, and some AutoCad. I actually kind of like my old Dell Inspiron 17 screen which I just sold for more than I should have (thanks covid), but the graphics were slow and the battery was awful. I went out and bought an Asus M16. Super great specs, but I really can't stand a matte screen and 16 inches is about as small as I want to go without wearing glasses. Bottom line there are tons of great gaming laptops out there with amazing specs for that price range including the ROG G17, but I really can't get over the matte screen. It just looks blurrier than OLED screen, touchscreens, or any non matte screen. Is there anything out there which all of those XPS 17 like qualities (great keyborad, display, processor/video card) that might fit the bill you've come across? Note, just to throw out there, I don't have room to plug into a monitor and keyboard. Moved to a new town without checking the housing market and living in a tiny house with wife and kid so the monitor on my laptop is what I primarily use and run around the house with trying to find space to work. My wife is about to kill me after looking at so many reviews so thought it was time to drop a line to you for help.
I'm not aware of any glossy gaming laptop screen. There are protective foils out there, which are making displays glossy, but I don't think they work that well.
Lenovo Yoga Has an OLED screen but also has great processors and could run a most games. It is made to do design and editing. They have several screen sizes.
Your VR Headset might require Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is basically a USB-C connector, but with much higher throughput. Since Thunderbolt is an Intel proprietary technology, AMD-based systems have to add an Intel Thunderbolt chip and connect a port to it, something that adds cost, and is avoided by most motherboard/laptop makers.
Yeah I got that m8, its defo worth it. Ryzen 7, 3060. Doesnt matter what you play on it, the only thing where you need something better would be flightsim.
The usb ports on the side are usb 3.2 ss the ones in the back are actually 3.2ss but support DP (the ones next to hdmi port) so use those instead and your vr shouldnt be laggy anymore
@The everyday dad, another fantastic review! I have been on the hunt for a 4k video editing beast and was wondering out of the Asus ROG strix g17 and razer blade 15 base, which laptop would be better?
I use the Quest 2 via virtual desktop, without Ethernet (wifi6 5gz) and it is seamless, even with MSFS 20 on medium settings. The issue you have, is using the cable, as it isn’t yet supported. Either that, or like others have said, you haven’t got the correct settings in Nvidia 3D settings and Windows Graphics options. I would 100% recommend this laptop for VR, it is incredible......without cable and without me even using Ethernet.....
Can I get a real in depth assessment of the trackpad? I'm seriously considering pulling the metaphorical trigger to purchase this laptop, but the fact that it does not have dedicated left/right mouse buttons are kind of a deal breaker for me. I'm one handed so a dedicated mouse isn't an option. 1. Is it accurate? 2. Is it responsive? 3. Does it register quick movements? 4. Does it act quirky when depressing to register the left/right buttons? 5. Can pressing down on the trackpad be deactivated? (I don't mean to totally disable the trackpad, just the left/right buttons that are activated when pushed upon) 6. Is the entire surface useable? If I think of anything else concerning the usability I'll ask, but for now could you give me an honest breakdown? I'd truly appreciate the feedback.
I just got mine, and the trackpad is super responsive. Waaay more than my Scar II's--and actually better without the buttons. The only thing I wish was different was that it was centered, not off to left. I'm left handed but do most mouse/trackpad motions right handed and I keep missing it. I 'll get used to it, but right it feels "off." I don't know about the deactivation part--just got it a couple hours ago.
@@NicoleMontgomeryWriter Thank you for responding, I genuinely appreciate it. I'm mostly interested in knowing about the deactivating of the left/right mouse buttons when the trackpad is depressed, but I can wait until you figure it out; I'm almost confident that there has to be an option, if not then I'm out of luck. However I'll confess that my reason for wanting the laptop altogether has changed, so the other questions that I initially made enquiries after can be disregarded thanks to your confirmation concerning your user experience; that it has been exceptionally satisfactory. I do not believe that you'd be impressed if it was less than stellar and being a lefty myself, I like the fact that it's more offset to the left side of the laptop because then it's more ergonomic and my thumb can handle all the mouse gestures while the fingers get those keys pressed. Thank you again for your input. If you figure out if it allows the depression of the trackpad to disable the left/right button presses, please let me know. Until then, do enjoy the laptop! Cheers!
Hey! Thank you very much for videos on this laptop. I noticed you said on the "one week later" video that you said that this laptop has another m.2 slot for another ssd? So it has two? Are you sure? Thanks again!
cheers, thanks to you, got myself a strix scar 17 too few days later than your first video. So glad i found one in stock . The only thing i wish they had was metal keyboard panel, the same material as screen top.. plastic just doesnt feel as solid for the price range. tho not bad in any way. Also not sure how it will go when i have to change thermal conductors since one really doesn't need reapplying for 1-2 years(liquid metal) while other needs it every 6-12 months.. Also fans at 2500rpm have some strange high pitch whine. But so far only this much problems for me im really happy with it
Great video, but the question that i am currently looking for answer is the following: I checked asus websites and they have two models with the RTX3070 and they are: G713QR-HG022T or G713QR-HG116R . I was wondering if these models support 64GB of RAM because that's my key deciding factor right now. i have saw a review on Newegg stating that a user has put 64GB of ram in the G17, i checked on crucial's website and they also say that the Asus G713QR modeled laptops support 64GB of RAM. Is this True? and can you confirm this? Because as it is stated on Asus's website these two models: G713QR-HG022T or G713QR-HG116R support a MAX capacity of 32GB of RAM only. Second: do they have a pcie gen4 socket or only Gen3 socket.
Kinda unimpressed with the latest laptops. They are pretty expensive and when my Dell G5 i7 10750h RTX 2070MQ gets 7220 timespy score and runs Cyberpunk at ultra settings at over 60fps and only cost me £1150 about 6 months ago there's just no comparisons for value for money.
I have the 2021 G15 and have had other Asus laptops in the past that had problems working with the Oculus Quest 2. You can force Oculus programs to use the dedicated GPU and that fixed the stuttering issues for me
Here in india Asus ROG Strix G17 and Lenovo Legion pro 5 are at same price $2107 but the difference is the QHD 2k display by lenovo with RTX 3070 with 140W max TGP makes it the perfect choice by users
The problem with the VR is probably due to the Nvidia 3000 series GPU, as they also dropped the Type-C port from Desktop gpus. The GPU might just not support VR well enough..
The spec is good. But the speakers are terrible. After 2 months of using it, the speakers started to hear noisy vibration sounds like a broken speaker. Imma need these speakers ASAP.
Have a look at the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro or Legion 7 2021 models. I reckon they are even better bang for the buck. 1600p 16:10 165Hz display might be even better for content creation 8 core 5800 RTX 3070 140W
@@纳瑞曼 depends on region. at the launch in South East Asia, I think someone got the RTX 3070 5800H with 2x8GB (both replaceable) and 1TB M2 SSD for less than US$1500 (see reddit)
I’d love to know your thoughts on this versus the M1 MacBook Air. I switched away from windows because I was absolutely sick and tired of Intel’s crappy performance, if I had known there were things like this coming out, I may have reconsidered when I bought the M1 last November.
@Cat Person99 well intel chips in ultra notebooks were fairly shit thats really not a myth. my friend bought mac air with intel i5 2 cores in 2018 or 2017.. was funny and kinda sad when he tried to sell it later on.. after that he bought some windows, i think asus, ultrabook with 2 cores again cause the guy at the shop said that all i7's are quad cores :D So on ultra portable laptop m1 is indeed a better option over all intel offerings. Temperatures are really way more manageable since they are not gonna do any heavy work to begin with and m1 on low power is whee it shines while intel chips may not even be stable since they were not designed for such low power limits while m1 would struggle to keep up with x86 chip on higher tdp limits where intel chip would be more than fine(ryzen5000 tho..) So its not really fair to compare intel chips in some cheap or overall thermally limited notebook vs m1 notebook.
does anyone know how to make the *constant* popups stop altering between "performance" "windows" or some other obnoxious "feature"? i'd really love to find a solution to this madness
Been trying to verify if this laptop has an option for a QHD 165hz display. Pretty sure the Strix G15 does but every listing for the G17 I've seen as well as reviews like this one all have the 300hz 1080p screen on the test model. A QHD/165 on this laptop would be a perfect match with the top end Ryzen cpu and would strike the perfect balance between production and gaming. And although the 1080p screen on this laptop seems pretty good with decent color accuracy and all, the QHD/165 screens tend to surpass the 1080p screens in color accuracy. If I can get this laptop with a QHD screen, I'd be totally down, like yesterday.
I have this, use it with quest 2 and virtual desktop over WiFi 6 (no Ethernet) and it runs Msfs20 on medium seamless. It runs every VR game without any issues at all
hi, can I ask about the fonction about the functions of the two hotkeys button next to the disabling microphone button(the one with fan icon and the one with rogue icon) and what's the difference bettween the hotkey fan button and the f5 fan button, thanks in advance.
Question from non-expert here to anybody who can help? If I get a G17 with Intel processor (i7-10875H) and RXT 2070, am I likely to have the same connection problems with the Oculus Quest 2 or are we still trying to figure out the problem?
