I've got the smaller version, the strix g15 g513 instead of the g17 713, 15" 1080p 144 hz instead of 17" 1440p 165 hz, 16 gb ram instead of 32 gb, and a 3060 instead of 3070. Still has a 5900hx and 1 tb ssd. How much was this one? Mine was 1300 at msrp.
I still remember last year when I was desperate looking for a new laptop replacement for both gaming and video editing and I managed to find the last unit and it was the Strix G17 that you have reviewed, but with 300hz 1080p screen instead. Now it's almost a year since I'm using it and I'm going to say that I really love this laptop, consider that I always on the move and having Strix G17 that can handle my work and play games as well as just get entertain by the RGB lighting.................. it's just a great fun gaming laptop to have.
This was my decision in the end...it was a surprise to see ETA using this beast. I bought this but a different version...the g15 same AMD Ryzen 9 5900hx, rtx 3070 8gb, 32gb ram, 300hz fhd ips display, 1tb ssd...this is my third laptop. It is sure an upgrade from my HP with a quad core cpu and capped at 8gb ram...I had for 5 years. I bought it in the end of December...Then Asus released the specs of the 2022 ver. I kind of regretted my purchase but at the time I still didn't get the laptop. I got it in the second week of January and I changed my mind...best purchase ever but it was most expensive purchase yet that I've made 😅!
I've had this laptop for about 7 months and it's great. I was using a microcenter Powerspec unit before this one with an 8th gen i7 and a 1070, which was also great, but was definitely a budget laptop. This one is really in a different league. The screen especially is something worth while. Great colors, bright, super clear. I just wish it had room for a sata drive. 2 m.2's isn't bad by any means, but I would love a sata ssd in it as well.
Definitely looks nice, I really think more laptops should be 1440p. That's a sweet spot for gaming. I also believe computer manufacturers need to start shipping everything with 2.5gb network adapters. We have been on the 1 GB for way too long. Especially since some wireless adapters can perform faster than a 1gb. Asus actually makes some fantastic 2.5 GB network cards that are blazing fast. I have 4 in my systems.
I got the 5900hx + 3050 ti for $1450 CAD. It's such a boss. Tried to get one with a 3060 but couldn't here in Thailand. It's so good though, cooling is excellent
I wish companies like this would just sell these machines as desktop. Remove the battery, screen, keyboard and add a giant cooling solution and sell it as a console like windows machine. I would buy that over building my own desktop.
That'd be spectacular... Hopefully someone will drop in this thread one day with a "Actually this company has started doing that and it's super affordable!" comment...
Would also be interesting if someone did that as a mod using the parts to construct a mini pc out of it, probably not profitable as a second hand thing though.
I love my scar 15 with the RTX 3080, easily the best device I have ever had so far and it has replaced my PC.. Paid a premium to get it during the height of the transistor shortage though
I've had the Scar 17, 3080, 360Hz for a few months now and absolutely love it. Though the newer 3080Ti with mux switch will sure be a beast, due to this scar17 performance, I can hold off upgrading for a couple more years I think. But will be looking forward to your full in depth review on the Z13 😉
@@ActuallyAwesomeName yea 360 is actuallly worse then 240hz because anything higher than 300 usually gets artifacting in games and is worse then the barely non-existing ghosting with 240hz, 240 or 265hz is the best anyone can go with.
It's a great laptop, I've been running same one with 300hz 1080p screen (sadly it was the only one I could buy 1 year ago and I needed a laptop fast) and slightly slower CPU 5800H+3070. It replaced i7 8700k + 1080 Ti I had at home, and I never looked back, now I rarely run old PC at all. It's so nice to have so much performance and still be so mobile.
Just bought the newer 15" version of this laptop with the 6900hx and 3070ti to have a work station/gaming pc at the girlfriends place. It's a unit.. can't believe this is a laptop. Hooked it up to a 24" 1080p monitor by msi. Thing of beauty.
Every laptop user should know this. 1. Just “raise the bottom” let more air into the machine and you will found cpu&gpu each them reduce 10~15°C or in high usage will have more efficacy 2. You shouldn’t be use “laptop cooler” , cuz that effectiveness actually just like you put two bottle caps under laptop to raise it. But the cooler still use your limited power and it will let cpu&gpu become more hungry. There also very many ways let your experience better , like “gamer most of the time should limit cpu’s PL1&PL2 and offset voltage” “discrete graphics card overclock”. Sorry my bad English, hope it's not too hard to read. Just want help you gus. From Taiwan
I just cant spend so much on a laptop anymore. I did in the past and they seem to break easier since you carry it around and parts aren't as easily replaceable. If at all. But it is very cool to see how much power they can squeeze into a laptop these days tho!
When you start reading the specs, you skip the RAM for the PC. You lead right from the GPU RAM, onto the display. It's written there for us to see, but it gets skipped. Still great job on this powerhouse review.
"Real brick and Mortar stores that you can walk into" ...if YOU DON'T MIND A 300 MILE walk (For me) 😂 I can't wait to go there one day. Great content, thanks so much for all the emulation help over the years❤
I've had an ROG laptop about 6 years ago, it was an ROG G751JY, a 4 core/8 thread beast with a GTX 980M GPU with NO Optimus. That thing was literally as powerful as my desktop back then. It did weight a ton though and it's power brick was the size of a literal brick. Main problem with high-end gaming laptops is their subpar battery life, especially when you put load on them. They are pretty much only good as (much more expensive) desktop replacements. Nowadays, I've switched to ultraportables, like the Surface Pro which I simply connect remotely to my ultra high-end desktop rig when I need more computing (or gaming) power. But considering the current GPU situation, gaming laptops like this ROG might actually provide quite a decent value for the money.
I just picked up this laptop yesterday to upgrade from older laptop that I'll hand down to my mom. Aside from the Windows Home bloat it's been good so far. I'm still working on getting my SQL server classwork and my work access moved over but so far so good. I just now need to work on personal tweaks. I may also see about maxing the ram to 64GB and adding another ssd for retro gaming.
got one, mother board died in less then a month, finally got it back a week ago, still setting it up again it's great and has a ton of power and great batt life, but worried about how reliable it will be
also, one note, with the manual settings, you can GREATLY reduce the watts, yes, but ONLY when it's plugged in - unless they've updated this, it's been a huge issue, as when i'm running on battery, it only allows for windows/silent/performance modes, turbo and manual control are locked out
I don't know if we already have this, but laptop performance these days are so good, they should come with a dock with like extra USB ports or HDMI outs and stuffs, and include a desktop mode button where you can turn it on while fully closed and plugged into the dock, sitting on a desk with like 2 or 3 monitors. Somewhat like a Nintendo Switch concept. It'd be really nice to be able to stick it in a dock and use it like a desktop and just remove it and bring it with you on the fly. It'll be neat and tidy and yeah... it'll be dope!
I managed to get the 3080 version refurb at MC for $1800. Can't pass up that at all. My last few gaming laptops were MC refurbs. I would look there first if you can, those boys know their stuff & never sold me junk.
with every that going on right now getting these kind of components will cost me close to 2500 if i were to build a desktop right now but I can get a laptop with the same specs for around 1500 seems like a good deal to me
I have the 2018 version of this and it’s still a great laptop -i7-8thgen proc/32Gb Ram/NVME 256gb OS/1Tb SSD/Nvidia geforce8Gb/added custom heat sinks and gels. Have it attached to a Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 49” display.
I'm playing on the Asus ROG Zephyrus S17 with the core I9-11900h and RTX 3070 with 16GB of RAM, and a 1440p 165hz screen. All aluminum chassis, and it has destroyed every game I've thrown at it. RDR2 on ultra settings with DLSS set to quality and I'm getting 65-75fps with my GPU averaging 76 degrees C, and my CPU hovering around 80. Asus is absolutely killing right now.
Love your videos man, could you please use a benchmark in Forza Horizon 5 in the future? It makes a big difference when you just drive around alone vs race in a city
I'm using a Zephyrus G15 right now, kind of similar 3070/1440p but it's a 15" screen. 2021's gaming laptops were great. 2022 models will have some performance increases for sure, but I think getting a good deal on a 2021 11th gen/Ryzen 5xxxx system is going to be the best bang for the buck.
Gaming laptops are awesome. That’s how I pretty much play any video games nowadays. They are powerful, convenient and portable around the house. Obviously you need to keep them plugged in as the GPU will run the battery down in one hour! But for the performance and portability they are excellent around the house.
Like @Takimara I also have the 1080p 300hz 5800H 3080 model. I'm surprised how little battery life this review got out of it, since when all the power saving options are turned on it I get over 12 hours browsing online.
Thank you. I'm about to ask you if you could review an Asus Strix or scar gaming laptop since I'm planning to buy one. but you already did. Thank you. keep it up bro!
I'm looking to get a new laptop sometime this year...ASUS is really doing well. TechLead had the one with dual monitors on it. Though honestly this one would be just fine.
Probably hugely more expensive too. I’d rather get whatever is on sale. I’m still using 10th gen. The processors are overkill for most people anyway. Unless you do benchmarking or video editing it’s not worth it.
Based on reviews on the 12900HK if we had to compare geekbench scores, the intel scored 1855 single & 13000 on the multicore. I can't wait to see how the 6900HX compares
I'd expect at least parity, and a leap 8n graphics potentially depending upon the gpu design, igpu should definitely be better, and if it has a radeon dgpu too it should work well. But tests will show for sure of course.
I got an ASUS Zephyrus G15 last year: The 5900HS and RTX 3080 does about everything I ask of it. A white classy laptop definately takes some extra care but at the time it was the only thing that was available with that kind of power. Only 16GB RAM is enough for now but it can be upgraded. Most important with a laptop is a good quit cooling solution and nice IO. I mostly use my G15 tied to docking station with a big external monitor at home, and take it with me for travel. A 17 inch screen for standolone use is better but I wouldnt spend any more money on a device like that ( like Dell XPS, MacBooks...). This G15 will last me a long time and as its stands now there wont be a gaming laptop with even newer CPU´s and RTX4000 series in the near futuire that is worth upgrading too...
This laptop is just great and even has a decent battery life for lightwork but way too expensive for me lol, I'm currently looking for a mid spec laptop mainly for emulation that can run at least Rpcs3 to play Demons souls and Gran turismo 6. I have my Pc at home but I work away for weeks sometimes and I'd like to have a reliable laptop for games and work. At home it would be a media/gamestream living room machine. Budget is 650-850$ and I really apreciate any input you guys can give and if it's better to go Amd or intel for emulation.
I tried to preorder this very laptop a couple times about this time last year… but they kept pushing it out. So I snagged the 15” version of it because I could actually get my hands on one.
Quick question about battery loss over time on laptops. I keep my charger plugged in, but it is capped at 60% when turned on (setting I enabled) When off will this effect my battery life over time?
GOW ultra is way beyond the ps4 and ps5 settings. 1440P with DLSS quality is what I play at also, the best compromise. Or I can play 1440 high with no DLSS which is still beyond PS5 with a little razer 15" RTX 3070 max Q laptop and keeps me over 60FPS at all times. DLSS quality usually means it is rendering at 1080P and using the AI upscaling to go to 1440P, but GOW is different and has some weird base resolution with DLSS. Balanced has a lower base render and performance mode is even lower again, and I would only use those two out of desperation, but have never had to on any game thus far. My Lenovo Legion 7i with full power 140w 3070 and same CPU but can maintain max all core turbo without ever thermal throttling, is on another level again. On that one I play ultra no DLSS/1440P+ (or more commonly known as QHD+/2560x1600), no scaling of any kind, just a flat 1440P and it is always over 60 FPS. I don't understand how people commonly say PS5's are faster than desktop graphics cards, when a mobile 3070 is around a desktop 2060 super/2070, and is killing the PS5. Let alone something like a desktop 3080/3090 LOL.
I've got one of the razer 14 with the 3070. The watts they give to the gpu is important for performance. If I remember right both the 3070 and 3080 versions were only given 100 watts which made the performance difference between the 2 models very small.
Yeah, that's what made me get 3070 blade 14 over 3080 but a few days after I bought the 3070 one, the 3080 one was available at the same price Brand new which was annoying.
If you put it on manual mode youll be able to squeeze out extra 10fps to 20fps, this laptop due to its high tdp 3070 can clock 1920mhz without a problem and still maintain adequate temps with proper ambient temp and a cooler, round 65c on the gpu and 70 on cpu while gaming !! Anyways ggs
I own a RTX 2070 laptop and honestly can't go back to desktop. If you work at home on your desk no way you want to sit at a desk again, I'd rather take my laptop and hook it up to my 65 inch tv in seconds and do everything with it. Before you go to sleep you can always take it with you and watch videos or connect it to a desk for production work.
Isn't this review a bit too late? Not that it's a bad review, it's amazing as expected from prime. It's just that the 6000 series amd professors have already been announced and 5900HX is an year old at this point already.
