It's great the way you show the laptop. There's no bogus additional lighting it's On a white background and everything else it's good info and visual breakdowns of the laptops.
I bought one, defective broken speakers and windows 11 installer would not find any drives in it, including older NVME drives I tried since it was not finding the one it came with... very annoying. I returned it
No it's not defective because VMD (RAID controller) is enabled in the BIOS, therefore, it can't see any SSD during Windows installation. You need to download and install F6 VMD driver during installation so it can see the SSD. It's been working this way since Windows NT and Windows 2000.
@@GenTechPC oh im not saying the drive or MB was defective... my speakers were and i sent it back due to the speakers... the drives not loading during install was another thing... and i understand that fix now that you have told me. Thanks
Thank you very much for the detailed look! Do you have a side by side comparison on thermals and fan noise and potentially performance against it's bigger brother the scar 18? Still back and forth between the potential performance/noise improvement of the 18 and the LED Display of the 16. Sincerely thank you in advance!
I ve got 18 version. Cpu max reach 95 C, and later fall up to 88. But suprise that Fire strike ultra You have 12 466 score points, but mine 13 498. Fully agreed that machine upllying LM on factory far away from best results.
Liquid Metal is supposed to reduce the heat because it has a much higher thermal conductivity. Using paste has a much lower thermal conductivity and also dries out over time. This is why Asus switched to Liquid Metal. Bruh 🤨
@@GenTechPC My 12th gen Scar had a terrible LM application as well, had to do it myself and it was a considerable difference. It's sad paying so much for a high end laptop when the QC is so bad.
@@GenTechPC It might not "dry" but it can definitely bond to your heatsink, which happened to me on an RTX 2070 Sager you guys sold me/ re-pasted with LM. Temps were good until a year or so, but then started throttling really bad. Paid someone to repaste it and they showed me how the LM bonded to the heatsink and there was nothing left covering the CPU die. Basically has turned me off to LM forever on a laptop now so there's that lol.
Nice review, thank you! So your comment regarding liquid metal not being as good and offering service to repaste. If liquid metal is more expensive, more difficult to install and not as good for heat dissipation, why are manufacturers using it? I'm curious about this, as I might end up with the 4080 version of this laptop since that's all that seems to be in stock around here other than the Blade 18 that's 1/3 the cost more. I've repasted things before, but I can't remember a single time where it's ever given me better results than the manufacturers pre-applied paste.
LM still the best for CPU but needs applied by hand, it needs to coat a thin layer and then apply the LM on the top. I think it's because Asus's manufacturing is applied by machine so don't get the best result.
Keep up the good work, 10/10 for the video. This laptop is my top choice but there is one more option, Eluktronics mech 17 with liquid cooling. Asus is a bit better and nicer looking, but coal whine is a bit of worrying they say it might even go worse over time and Eluktronics has better cooling with the liquid cooler, what do you think? Appreciate your opinion.
Eluktronics mech 17 CPU still goes up to 90C which is ok and build quality is more like Clevo so you might also want to checkout Clevo / Sager laptops. Asus is major brand and price are higher if you are looking for more premium laptop, poor pasting job by machine but simple re-paste is a easy fix.
@@GenTechPC Mech 17 costs same as Asus scar strix 18. My biggest worry is coal whine especially over longer period. Have you had issues with it on your 16 inch Asus?
@@mineBMW correct when i open my laptop first time i got crazy CW sound but after updates and so there is no more cw. if i dont open my laptop few days i only hear cw for few second that is all.
Good review I agree the paste job is bad on that unit. However, the i9-13980HX runs hot period. I have yet to see an i9-13980HX from any manufacture NOT hit 100c momentarily. My Scar 16 will hit 100c for a brief moment when loading games, but usually settles in the 82/90c range... Cinebench 97c max... With a BIOS undervolt of -80 (max allowed by ASUS) my idol temps are around 42-52c. So yeah, 100c is high, but this is every factory i9-13980HX. The coil whine is a thing with 2023 Asus laptops. I have slight CPU coil whine with the fans at 5000rpm or higher... At 5000rpm you're in headphone territory anyway.. The coil isn't notable or absent during normal use.
Agreed, I have the 18 inch G834JZ with a 4080 and i9 13980HX. It's honestly fantastic so far, after 12 days of everyday use and gaming I have no complaints, however some of the CPU's 'P' cores do hit 100c sometimes during gaming for long periods of time or during stress tests, whilst the package as a whole is usually around 80c-85c. On idle the CPU usually runs at 50c and the GPU 45c. As you said, it's likely every i9-13980HX, they just run hot.
I've also tried undervolting it in BIOS but ASUS only allows an undervolt of -30mV whilst it states that it can go up to a maximum of -80mV but any value above -30mV doesn't work. Also Intel XTU doesn't work currently, so I hope they fix this eventually and allow us to undervolt it a bit more!
i9-13980HX doesn't run hot, it's only poor pasting job and re-paste will fix it. MSI GE78 and GT77 with i9-13980HX don't even reach 90C under load with factory generic dry-type paste.
@@GenTechPC Which do you think is better in performance alone? From your scores you gave on this video and the MSI GE78, the Asus is top in Fire Strike score, slightly higher in Time Spy, but slightly lower in all the others (You didn't do a Fire Strike Extreme for the asus, but you did for the MSI). Is it slightly lower because of the paste job? Also, is liquid metal not always better than traditional thermal paste? I watched your MSI video and the temps were insanely low for only using thermal paste. I'm guessing the fans are faster/move more air than the asus? If its not obvious, I am looking to get one or the other lol.
@@solitarymassacre GE78 has BIOS issue and latest update fixed it. The initial BIOS during launch does not perform well if laptop is plugged-in, instead, it runs at battery mode with lower performance and does not recognized it's plugged-in with optimal performance. It's all fixed now with latest BIOS update.
I bought this about 2 weeks ago... came with a broken speaker so I returned... but the most annoying part was that when i tried to fresh install windows via rufus bootloader... windows 11 loaded fine (most recent copy downloaded from microsoft)... but the windows installer would not find any of the NVME drives in the scar (including older ones I tried to put in it)... so i was unable to fresh install windows. Can you check if yours is able to fresh install windows via USB? Thanks
It's because VMD (RAID) is enable in the BIOS which Windows 11 installation can't see the SSD in VMD enabled mode. You can either install F6 VMD driver on a USB during Windows 11 installation or, disable VMD in the BIOS.
@@GenTechPC ohh :) raid is enabled when there is only 1 NVMe in it? it only came with 1 1TB NVMe inside, i was expecting 2 512 in raid. im going to order the flow x16 this week, so if i have the same problem I will try that. that is great to know :) thank you!
@@Cryptomined This is the standard for most newer laptops even with 1 drive plugged in. you need to put the drivers on the USB drive and load them when you are at the drive selection screen.
@@tareqislam1434 I can second on the customer experience, bought a gaming chair and it had a bent rod so the seat sat crooked. Took like 3 months to get a replacement. Zero communication from them and then randomly I finally got it lol. Just bad.
@@GenTechPC Then this was tested on stock profile not the Performance/Game profile. Hence the scores you're seeing. The Scar 18 has the same components (just a bigger cooling solution due to the larger size chassis). If you're going to show benchmarks, show them for the use case most people buy these laptops for. We should be seeing a Timespy of around 20.5k aggregate provided you do the simple step of putting the laptop in the correct fan profile (if you're running 3DMark you should be using Performance/Game profile) . Yes this laptop will be a bit hotter as it doesn't have the same size cooling solution due to chassis size but the temps are well within spec. You should also show actual temps of real world use, not just with a thermal camera or at idle. Temps after a 3DMark run would be more useful (especially if you do a 10 minute looping run to thermally saturate the cooling solution -- this will give you scores and thermals that are more indicative of real world use). There are plenty of tech RU-vid reviews of the Scar 18 that use proper testing methodology and consistency in their process to make sure users get accurate data to make an informed buying decision. Way to shill your re-paste service btw :D
There are only 3 screws on each fan, remove the screws, disconnect the cable and take out the fan. You don't need to remove the heatsink to take out the fan.
Slightly confused, was always under the impression that liquid metal is more superior at transferring heat from CPU/GPU to heat plate and pipes, due to metal's unmatched thermal conductivity of delocalised electrons (being a unique property of metals). Has anyone experienced if the high temperatures of the '2023' ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 are causing any throttling issues of prolonged/sustained running times? Incidently, MobileTechReview reported similarly very high temps on the ROG Strix Scar 17 which comes fitted with an AMD Ryzen, so maybe there's an issue with 'how' the liquid metal is being applied or processed at manufacture.
Bro I purchased the same laptop , however I can’t seem to turn on HDR , it’s says use HDR not supported and don’t have have the same display information on the setting .
Dude, the liquid metal is much better than any other thermal paste, the temperatures was high becouse the CPU and GPU are very powerful and both have a high TDP. Repasting it WILL NOT make the temperature to go low.
Thanks for your review, does de ssd are in raid 1 or you have two disks separarte no raid, i bougt one waiting to arrive and i will like to upgrade, i saw in the part number in your video that you have two nmve of 1tb, Regards
i wanted to know i dont wanna spend on thermal pads and i use thermal paste on my 2070 laptop and it works best for low temps but do i really need to change thermal pads on like vram and heatskin (it still factory pads on it) using since 2021 jan
Hello which one is the best for solo gaming ( games like cyberpunk dead Space alan wake 2 etc .. ) : this one or the asus scar 17 with ryzen 7945 rtx 4090 and ips ? Thanks
gaming performance are similar with same GPU. If you like bigger screen go with Scar 17 or 18. If you like something smaller and easy to carry and same performance go with Scar 16.
@@GenTechPC So, if I was like just browsing online, wouldn't I hear weird sounds? (obviously it goes from case to case). One last thing, which I think is the most important, that liquid metal that drips out of the chip die, was there already before you disassembled the heatsink system, or did you notice that it spilled after removing the coverage?
Terrible coil whine on my unit. When the fan is on during the game in performance mode it is barely noticeable, so if gaming is all you do then probably fine. On Silent mode coil whine is really bad. Watching RU-vid or other work on the computer - it's also really bad. I bought it mostly just for playing games, but even with that I'm thinking that I should return it.
@@GenTechPC ok sounded rough. A question. I bought a raider ge77hx 3070ti 20k r23 score. It's still returnable. That said Is either strix scar 16 with either an i9 or the Ryzen version with an rtx 4080 going better than the msi ge77hx?
