How to teardown your Asus GL703GE (2018) and perform basic upgrades, fixes and repairs. CUKUSA - cukusa.com/asus-rog-strix-gl7... Amazon - amzn.to/2qKGMSn
Gotta say thanks for this. I have a GL703VM and this is not the 1st ROG laptop I've had and my previous was super hard to take apart to get at the fans. As someone who smokes and has long hair, this is very important. Smoking around fans makes everything stick to them, so a can of air is about as useless as pouring my coffee on the laptop. Been putting it off cleaning the fans dreading taking it apart (because of my older laptop experiences) and this helped allot.
I have the GL503GE and they have put the ram in the slot that is not easily accessible which means if I want to upgrade that ram stick, I have to open the computer up. If it was in the easy access slot I could just remove it and replace it. But because ASUS put a 8gb 1333Mhz stick inside my machine I cant find a ram chip to match the speed. So now I have to replace the ram stick inside the machine before i can even put a new stick into the easy access, also my GL503 has exactly the same setup as this machine, only apparently it has 4 memory slots. I haven't opened this yet, but your video has helped a lot thank you so much.
Hey, what is the purpose of the uncovered chip right next to the wifi card? Some of the models in the strix line-up have 3rd fan to cover that chip but the old ones and hero edition usually don't have the 3rd fan.
Hey there, would you be able to make a video on how to replace the keyboard for the ASUS ROG Strix GL703VD? My down arrow broke off of the bracket. I may be able to just replace the single key, however I might end up replacing the entire keyboard at some point since the cheapest option is purchasing an entire new backlit keyboard (rather than purchasing one single key for $10 I can have an entire replacement set for around $50). It would help me out so much! Thanks for your videos, these have been very helpful.
Thanks for this! this helped me a lot for cleaning! may I also ask if what is the specific model that i can use to upgrade my SSD? i bought my laptop with 124gb SSD and i would like to upgrade it to 1TB, what should I get?
Great video - liked and subscribed. I need some help as I'm new to customising laptops. I have the same laptop with a 1tb hdd - is there another slot where I can add an ssd and use that as master? I think it's long thin one above the hdd, but I'm not sure - if it is can you share the name of the slot because its impossible to make out on the video.
Hola, tengo la misma laptop que la suya y tengo un problema, al presionar el sector de las teclas (W-E-R-T) la laptop se reinicia, no es problema de software, tu sabes como puedo solucionar el problema?
What about removing the keyboard? I may have a defective keyboard in my Asus gl503g. I turned it off and now backlit keyboard or functionally keyboard. The only thing working is my power button
Ok, I just got home from Costco with my new GL703GE ($1000 plus tax!). Searched the web to find out if I just screwed up or not. I think I'm in love! Watched your video, man you have some honkin' skillz! But: SPEAK UP! You're not talking about your porn collection. I want to learn more this machine and I'm choosing you to teach me. But if I can't hear what you're saying, kinda tough to learn stuff, ya know? Your camera work is primo, great positioning and no vomit-inducing pans. Thanks. I know this sound thing is my problem (getting old sucks sometimes but it beats death by a lot!) but I need your help to fix it. And yes I know about the volume control, but there was a lot of background noise (and a lapel mic would help that). I will like and subscribe when I finish here, but if I don't come back you'll know why. Good job my friend, thanks for the effort and brain food.
Thank you for making this! So am I seeing correctly that this motherboard only has one SSD drive slot? You can only replace the SSD drive with a larger drive, not add a second one for more space?
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP. I got the Rog Strix gl703vd but the aluminum back cover (screen back) is dented. I wanted to know if the 17.3 gl703ge chassis is the same as the gl703vd because I'm only getting the back replacement for the gl703ge model. Please help!!!!!
Is the fan on the HDD side of the laptop considered the CPU fan? Mine is bad and when I went to order a replacement I see that there is a CPU fan and GPU fan. Thanks for the great video.
I see they have a Kingston 128 GB SDD. I wouold like to upgrade to 240 GB SSD card. Can you give any recomendations on compatibility? Also, I dont' think I need to remove anything but the quick access panal to replace the 128 GB SDD. Thank you.
i bought a keyboard that matches my keyboard numbers on ribbon cable, installed it made sure everything was put back in order reconnected battery and installed the bottom then checked lights on keyboard everything seems OK but since i had it unplugged for over a month i decided to charge battery the light for it being plugged in came on. 2hrs later i turned it on for first time and nothing happened , what did i do wrong?
hello i have a question the other slot to a ram its really another slot to another ram or not? the laptop come with 16gb of ram but i can place another ram of 16gb in the other site or is that why it is covered because you can't?
Hey I’m having trouble where I am constantly running high CPU I have not added anything to it or done any upgrading to it either any recommendations on what I should get or do to help perform better
do you think they installed ram in the easy access slot to avoid people sticking totally different ram in the easy access slot while leaving the existing ram in the harder to get to slot?
What type of fan is that on the left side, in line with the HDD? A CPU or GPU fan? I need to change that part because of crackling noise coming from it.
Mine came super loose like that out of the box, it was my 3rd laptop that I took back because of out of the box issues so I just stuck with it. Last week the trackpad randomly stopped working(I use a mouse either way) but to solve it I reinstalled the driver. I’d like to know if there’s a fix for the loose pad!!
Thank you for the nice info! I want to buy this model but want to buy extra ram for dual channel. Do you happen to remember the RAM model they use? For upgrade reference and tech geeks, it would be super useful to note in the video description the model numbers of the components (ex: RAM - 8GB Kingston 2666 CL17 KCP426SS8/8, HDD - Seagate Barracuda, 1TB, 7200RPM ST1000LM049 etc.). I'm just enumerating random models here, of course.
Hey Chris, did you find out eventually about the Ram ? my ram is in the heatpipe slot not the easy access panel so I can't take it out without doing a complete teardown
My laptop screen keeps on turning white. Sometimes it is a flickering white with lines. It works with external monitor but laptop screen turns white. Plz help.
I have a problem with mine where the gpu fan is always maxed out and and doesn’t respond to my fan settings. Can anyone help it is so loud I can’t take it to class
Great review! just one question. which ram memory model does it come with? im buying this laptop and wanna do dualchannel but cant find the info about the default ram i would need...
I have the GL503GE which looks identical to this machine and it has 1333Mhz speed DDR4 SODIMM ram. It might not be the same, but probably is. I would just buy two ram sticks and swap the old one out.
can i use this "WD High-Performance NVMe PCIe Gen3 8 GB/s M.2 2280 Solid State Drive Black 500GB WDS500G2X0C" hard drive for upgrade? how many ram slot are there in laptop?
I am having the same laptop as you and bought the 8 GB ddr 4 2400MHz ram but when I attach the RAM to my Laptop, Black Screen appears and nothing happens further? Please resolve my problem. I have also tried to clean of ram by Eraser and cleaning the port by soft brush gently. The RAM I bought is : @t. Thanks in Advance.
i have the gl503, i don't wanna open it yet cause it voids my warranty. But i do want to know one thing- my laptop has a 500GB SSD currently, can i add an HDD(or another SSD) later on in i want to expand my storage?
Assuming you open it properly and perform normal upgrades in it, it likely should not void your warranty. To make sure, however, you should contact them directly regarding that.
I have a GL703V and the screws that are numbered on the heat sink/fan piece are giving me some trouble. I cannot screw them down completely as they get stuck 1/3 into their respective holes when I try to reassamble the laptop post repaste.
August Wigg You might be using the wrong screw in the wrong hole, or there might be something that hasn't fully been reseated inside and is therefore sticking up a bit. Mixing up screws is something I've done many times.
So sad right now. I have the same laptop and it just broke down. I was just playing like usual and it suddenly freezed and crashed. I turned it off and when I tried to turn it on again, it just won't. I tried the battery discharge method and still nothing. I don't have the money to buy another one again.
Hello, do I have to unplug the battery if I want to change a RAM. Or do I have to do something particularly to software or hardware before or after... removing old RAM and place the new one?
I doubt you still want an answer but for anyone else if you switch it off with a full shutdown and its not connected to power there shouldn't be any need to disconnect the battery.
so i have a weird problem with my GF's laptop, so this happens whether the power is plugged in or not, the laptop will keep shutting off and back on again, repeatedly, only showing a black screen the entire time, UNTIL....UNTIL i hold down ANY key, and for as long as I hold down a key, the computer will start to load giving me the RoG loading screen, ((i have a different asus model than in this video)) But if i let go of the key, the computer just shuts down and starts the whole on/off process again, but if I keep holding the key down, the computer refuses to load windows, and says simply that the computer couldn't start windows, then wants us to use the system restore, when we try to do that, it just attempts repairs....forever, I've never experienced a problem like this, any ideas people?
I have sticky keys, I suspect some of the four arrow keys because I may have spilled something in that area .. and intermittently, it's backspacing on me. I have removed the keys and cleaned there ... I have taken the whole thing apart to try and access the keyboard from underneath ... I have taken a high-powered air compressor and blown the crap out of everything ... no luck!
Thank you for the video but I was looking for someone who could help me out how I could replace my LCD screen of this laptop because the Screencover is blocked by the hinge.
have been looking for a legit channel that can show how to do this stuff!! great video. quick question i am trying to find a video about replacing the gpu on this model of laptop. I am looking to buy and i think I have narrowed my choice down to this one and would like to be able to upgrade later on. Do you have a video for that procedure on this model or know of a video online that shows how? thank you!
Idk if it's still a relevant question for you but whatever. You can't replace laptop gpus. It's soldered on the motherboard. If you really want a laptop in which you can "upgrade" the gpu later on find one with a thunderbolt 3 port with 4 pci-e lanes (This is not that laptop). You can hook up an external gpu to that if you want but worth mentioning that if you want max performance from that gpu you will need an external monitor. There is a performace loss (~10-15%) if you use the laptop's built in screen.
could you tell the model/brand of the 2666hz DDR4 ram plz im confused i have that laptop wants to upgrade but it seems it is not crucial i would take the exact same RAM, please?
i guess you don't remember was 1 year ago.... the problem is the reseller says everywhere 2666 ram and crucial says 2400 when their website try to sell me stuff as compatible, but i would take the exact same CL and frequence for avoiding bugs on dual channel.
I have such a problem. It is in manual, that one power plug socket only keeps it alive, and don't charge a battery, and another is charging. in mine both of the plugs are charging the laptop battery. Any clues? thanks.
Great video, thanks for the useful information. Where is the CMOS battery is located on GL serious laptops? I watched your video carefully and paused it when I see the whole mother board but could not locate the battery? Strix 15 GL503GE
Why not relocate the RAM away from the easy access slot to the more awkward location while you were in there? Anyway, good breakdown, many thanks. I'll be getting an ASUS GL703GE when my local store restocks.
I'm about to break mine down to re-paste as well but I want to as if there is any reason i should not relocate the ram to free up the easy access slot? I ordered a new stick of ram and I don't want to have to take the whole underside off again. will it be ok if i move the ram to the hidden spot now?
Glad this video exists and that I saved a shortcut to it - 👀 - I bought this laptop around 3 years ago (May 2018) and it is still running nicely, although mine is the GL703GM model as I am in Asia. Just after warranty expired the battery died, swelling-up inside and bowing the mousepad overnight while I slept. That's been replaced. I'm back here again because the HDD has now died and I just wanted a refresher prior to getting out the toolkit.
Good laptop! I'm watching right now on that laptop! Need a larger SSD size though. Not large enough for all the games. Yeah...I have around 230 gigs of games just on the SSD. Around 30 gigs only. It sounds like a decent size until you do any motion work.
How many RAM slots are available in this laptop? And I've heard somewhere on internet that one ram is soldered on the motherboard that's why only one slot is available for upgradability
Try reinstalling the keyboard drivers or whatever, I don’t know too much about it but my rgb stopped working so I messed with the settings in Game Center and entire keyboard stopped working, I think I just reinstalled the keyboard driver(or whatever it is called) and it’s fine
love this video it helped me decide on gaming laptop. Do you know if i can put a 512gb or maybe 1t pcie or sata ssd in this laptop and 2t sshd firecuda?
@@Ballz2U2 yes, you may need to open the PC again(literally open it like he did in the video) and there should be a usb plug for SSD waits for you to plug it its USB hole. As I remember, it is located on the case not on the laptop. Hope it helps.
the one and only GOOD thing about the base ram being in the "easy access" slot is it allows you to quickly swap it out for a 32 gig stick if you are wanting to eventually expand it to 64 gigs...assuming ti can do that....otherwise, super dumb configuration forcing customers to open the entire back of the laptop to get to the 2nd ram slot.
This video really helped me to figure out a problem I've been having with my laptop. Turns out, I have a bad fan. :( Also turns out, it's really hard to find a replacement fan.
