Btw you don't have to completely disable it, if you read the first comment on that reddit post, putting it at "efficient aggressive" let's you keep the boost when it's really needed. Hey guys! Regarding undervolting for the 4800H, you can pretty much accomplish the same thing with Ryzen Controller! I've been playing around with it, and have found that I can cap my CPU temp at pretty much anywhere I want it to be, depending on the TDP I select! So you know, the conversion rate for the program's TDP vs. the chip's TDP isn't exactly 1:1, but after some fiddling around, I still found values that worked! For instance, when I'm playing games (in performance mode) my stock CPU temp holds at the typical 95C, while the GPU holds at its typical 86C. NOW, when I set a TDP in Ryzen Controller of say, 15 watts, for example (while simultaneously undervolting my GPU in MSI Afterburner at 1500MHz@0.700V), I have achieved a CPU temp of 85C, and GPU of 75C. All while dropping my FPS by only like 10% or so (if at all, depending on the game). BTW the setting of 15 watts in RC doesn't actually mean my true CPU TDP is now sitting at 15 watts, as I have seen it actually float anywhere between 15 and 25 at this setting. So like I said, the conversion rate isn't actually 1:1; you'll just have to play around with it. But anyways, if I want a lower CPU temp, I just pick a lower TDP, and get a lower framerate. Inverse is naturally true, too. I just like to game at 85C or so on average. Basically though, the program is quite granular, meaning that I could set a TDP of 17 watts if I wanted, and game at 89C on the CPU and 78C on the GPU. The overall improvements in CPU temps, BTW, aren't as effective without simultaneously undervolting/underclocking the GPU (as they share heatpipes, remember). But fortunately, undervolting/underclocking the GPU doesn't appear to be having any effect on performance, whatsoever, regardless of whether I manipulate my CPU's TDP or not. Oh, and of course, turbo mode only adds an additional layer of improvement over all these values. I just like to game on performance mode because I prefer the quieter fan noise. Also, the Ryzen Controller's "Maximum CPU Temperature" setting doesn't seem to have any effect on the 4800H, so the only useful part of the tool as of late seems to be the CPU's TDP setting. Ultimately, the biggest benefit I see to Ryzen Controller is that I am still seeing turbo boost kick in at the appropriate levels, vs seeing it capped at a lowly 1.7GHz when using the "99% trick" or 2.9GHz using the new registry trick that disables turbo boost. Of course, when capping my TDP using RC the maximum boost speeds I am seeing are a little less, like 3-3.4GHz vs 4 or so. But that is surely an improvement over a locked 1.7GHz or 2.9GHz, and to which makes a big difference in the average FPS for my games! Also, by manipulating the TDP using RC, I have achieved better control over my temps as opposed to the more modest improvements I get when using the turbo-boost-disabling registry trick. Hope this helps, and happy gaming!

THEN, if you want ultimate control, you can alternatively squeeze a little more FPS out of your games -- depending on how you feel about your temps -- by using Ryzen Controller, albeit thus requiring a little trial and error along the way to find the ideal TDP value. Basically, one method (the turbo-boost-disabling method) keeps CPU temps down by capping your boost clocks, while the other method (the RC method) keeps CPU temps down by capping your TDP. The two work in similar ways -- but differently -- and as such, each have their own respective benefits depending on which game you play / what your goals are. (The RC method works better for me when playing NFS, for instance, as it does a better job at preventing me from going over 90C, while the turbo-boost-disabing method works better for me when playing DiRT Rally, as it doesn't seem to push me past 85C anyways). AND FINALLY, if you're into squeezing as much gameplay out of your machine for as little power spent (and fan noise) as possible -- like gaming on battery for instance -- nothing beats the RC method, hands down. Not even the 99% trick. (And certainly not the turbo-boost-disabling trick, nor the Silent Mode profile in Armoury Crate, for that matter, either.) I mean, 78C/76C on the CPU/GPU, w/ 110 FPS average, all while using only 12W/65W of CPU/GPU power? SOLD! Ultimately though, the real mod that is making these CPU mods worth doing is the GPU undervolting/overclocking mod using MSI afterburner! For without it, CPU temps just aren't as capable of dropping so easily (because of how the two share heatpipes). Thank goodness for MSI Afterburner!

William Montgomery It’s seems that the RC TDP @ 11W + GPU UV/OC is the best way to lower down the temp but what does RC TDP @ 11W means? I’m thinking of getting this or a MSI laptop with a i7 9 gen but the ryzen 7 4800h is better than the the i7 but I heard it has a good cooling and build. Idk which one to get.
@zoinbergs
@zoinbergs 4 года назад
@@mp3sefu RC TDP @ 11W means that I set a value of 11 in Ryzen Controller for the CPU TDP value. (Of course, the conversion rate for "set" TDP vs the "true" TDP the CPU will be running at isn't actually 1:1, so fortunately by setting it at 11 you're not **actually** going to see the CPU physically capped at 11 watts (as evidenced by its reported 18.6W use in HWInfo64). But yes, ultimately I have found that a TDP value of 11 to 13 in RC yields me the best results in games, depending on how CPU intensive the game is. Fortunately, you can simply minimize the game, change the TDP value on the fly, and then restore back into the game without restarting it, so the trial-and-error aspect of the tweak is easy to put up with! Personally, I have had great success with ASUS. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their products to anyone. (Not a paid endorsement here, I'm just a repair technician by trade).

That’s one spicy review! Always love your breakdowns. Bummed to hear there is no way to undervolt the Ryzen CPU’s, but I’m sure that’s in the works in some way - because that will no doubt help the throttling and performance. This would help the thermals as well, but glad to see it’s keeping cool though! That said - I love everything about this laptop and the price, except the competitor G5 seems to the back placed inputs (USB C, Ethernet, etc). This is one thing business laptops have done for years, and I always wonder why so few consumer grade have done this.
@zoinbergs
@zoinbergs 4 года назад
Hey there! I've been able to lower the TDP of my 4800H using "Ryzen Controller," which is almost the same as undervolting. By doing so, I have been able to manipulate my temps down to the exact degree. The actual TDP > TDP conversion rate isn't 1:1, so I pretty much start with 20 in RC and go up or down from there. But basically, I have achieved great frames rates, at great temps, and have been quite satisfied with the program thus far! For example, I have my TDP set for NFS Payback at 15 watts, and have my GPU locked (using MSI Afterburner) at 1500MHz/0.700V, and have been able to achieve ~100 FPS on high settings w/ 4XAA while holding 85C on the CPU and 75C on the GPU. Like I said, I could go up or down on the CPU temp, by about a 1.5 degrees per TDP value. I just find myself most comfortable sitting at 85C or so, while still being able to achieve super high frame rates at pretty high detail levels. Basically if I wanted to see 75C on the CPU, for example, I would just lower the TDP in RC to 14 or 13 or something (and would thus be seeing ~80 FPS while playing). Hope this helps, and happy gaming!

Your CPU/GPU temps might drop slightly, but other components are going to be missing out on that cooling, which could impact its longevity. I modded the bottom panel of my Asus G51 back in the day and ended up covering it back up for this reason.

So , in essense , a bad design by ASUS... Either bad thermals in general , or bad thermals for specific components like VRM? Idk why ASUS is doing this , same with G15 ... Honestly, the G14 has same or better thermals than G15 and TUF and it runs CPU at the same 35 W...

Notice that the fans and heatsinks are only using about 2/3 of the rear vents on the left and right to exhaust hot air, and there's a vent in the middle that's intake-only. It's not a bad design. @NovaThunder5
@NovaThunder5 4 года назад
If it gets that high, accomplish what it needs to and then lowers, everything's fine. BUT say if you are gaming for a few hours, then all the machine is gonna be heated a lot and so some components got temperature tolerance, or limits. It may and WILL: increase electrical resistance which will reduce efficiency, faster electrical pathways degradation, even low temperature solder may melt (ok that one is rare or even non-existent on recent hardware, screw you internet and fake news). Here are some info I found here and there: - HDDs and SSDs As per Seagate response: "The operating temperature range for most Seagate hard drives is 5 to 50 degrees Celsius." Most SSDs are rated for running within a temperature range of 0ºC up to a max temp of 70ºC. WD red HDDs can operate from 0 up to 70ºC. However, studies like the one Facebook conducted in their own data centers found that the hotter your SSD runs, the quicker it wears out the flash memory inside of the drive. So while an SSD can technically operate at the higher ranges advertised by manufacturers, you’re going to get better data integrity and more life out of your SSD if you keep it cool. Also note that HDDs S.M.A.R.T. feature stores the highest temperature attained. If it ever surpasses it's rated max temp, it may void the warranty. - Battery As per iFixit: "If You Leave It Plugged In, Don’t Let It Run Hot. Keeping your laptop plugged in regularly, with the battery charged to 100 percent, isn’t slowly killing it, despite what you may read. The exception is if your laptop runs hot. This could be because you’re doing a lot of compiling, rendering, or other intensive work, or because it’s hot where the laptop is used, due to sunlight, exhaust, or other factors. When you combine a battery at maximum capacity with serious heat exposure, that’s when it starts taking damage and losing life." - GPUs and CPUs Lots of GPUs will operate comfortably up to 95ºC, CPUs up to 105ºC. You may need to check yours but I wouldn't fear as those are made to last. -RAM and motherboard Couldn't find any evidence as to what maximum temperature is safe to run under. OK we're done so lower is better, how low is good? Well it shall never fall below room temperature as water drop would form onto components due to condensation. Anyways as a rule of thumb: lower is better, a laptop is not meant to be up and running all day, and wear a face cover if you go somewhere and you can't stay 2m afar from random people. :-)

@@localghost3000 Exactly tho I can see the price dropping in a couple of months or maybe even weeks. It happened with the last TUFs as well. They really screwed the screen and thermals tho. I think the last year's Helios is still a great deal considering you can make do with a average battery. The prices would be dropping now to make way for new stock.

Thank Jarrod, really greate review. But can you make a test with 2 vacuum cooler on the back of the laptop. I hear those have great effect on lower the temperature but nobody seem to use it. May be it will hurt the internal fan in the long run?

Hey there! I use the vacuum coolers, and while they don't work very well alone (as they only seem to induce the inside to ramp temps back up to max) they work WONDERS once you disable turbo boost while simultaneously undervolting/overclocking the GPU. As in, with all three mods, I've been able to game in the high 60's / low 70's with ZERO loss in framerates! (Without the vacuum coolers I still see mid 80's for CPU and low 80's for GPU which is still great IMO).

The bottom panel has plastic pads stuck to it from the inside right where the fans are. You can remove them to improve thermals.

@@ppaditya8146 Hey Aditya, feel free to contact me via other channels as you will get answers to all of your questions much faster. Well, let's get to the point. When i received the laptop and turned it to 'turbo' mode the temperature went high very fast without even doing anything only surfing the web. When I was playing Saints Row 4 at ultra graphics it reached a crazy high temperature of 90 degree Celsius which is very bad. Currently i'm working on the temperatures of the laptop right now to get better temperatures.

You can check if thermal throttling happens using Hardware Info. It has 3 different values of CPU throttling and even if you don't monitor it live, you can check it afterwards (assuming HWInfo is running in the background) cause the Max values will switch to "Yes". I tested it on my FX505DU which has an AMD Ryzen 7 3750H.
