This is my main system GPU and the hotspot has always bothered me. So today we are replacing the thermal paste and thermal pads to see if the temperatures improve using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme and premium thermal pads from China XD.

Thanks for the tutorial! First 4 weeks I had fabulous temperatures on my Asus and the Delta was just 15 degrees. After 4 weeks it is getting worse. Have around 65 degrees and nearly 90 on hotspot. So I will give a try if it is getting worse. Thanks you so much bro.

I´ve just repasted mine 7900 xt form XFX with MX-4. When I played games like Last of us i had gpu 60 and hotspot 95. After I have 60/80. So thanks for the video! It helped me a lot! EDIT: My result lasted only for week or two. The hotspot temp went back as it was so I decided to go with PTM 7950 and it is already month or so and the temps are as it should be. (delta no more the 20 and hotspot under 90) No regrets at all. Interesting is that the new XFX 7900 XTX card called Pheonix Nirvana already has the PTM 7950 applied by stock so I think the XFX knows why they use it instead of regular thermal paste.

I repasted my Hellhound 7900 XTX with PTM 7950,about a year ago at this point. The card was running very cool initially but after 2-3 weeks my hotspot steadily begun to increase and was getting over 30c delta,like everyday it was getting hotter. upon opening the card the pads seemed much higher quality than the trash pads in your card,and they were intact, the contact also seemed fine. but the thermal paste right on the middle of the die was dry. The card was maybe,two months old at this point,since they had just came out, so it was a pump out effect. supposedly powercolor changed the paste they're using since but I see still many people with powercolor gpus with the same issues. I think I did a pretty good job repasting the card with the PTM,since my delta is extremely low,even a year later.

Was the initial monitoring with the PW limit increased? If it is then it is expected for temps to go up. I did this with my taichi 7900xtx but used ptm 7950 for the core and replaced pads with upsiren u6 pro putty. I had the same results on hotspot being sub or about 80 c. with PW limit maxed out hotspot peak reading never exceeded 95c (in kh3 with 200 percent render resolution which made my hotspot shoot previously to 107c). Either way it's good to see you had success with this.

Air bubbles and gaps between the heatsink and cpu/gpu are caused by deformities on the face of the paste when applying to the cpu. Watch for peaks, curl-overs, and valleys on the surface of the paste; as these trap air between the heatsink and the cpu even though there may be some paste extruding from the edges of the chip. Also try not to smooth over valleys, instead fill them in, (you don’t want cause an invisible bubble under the surface). It’s easiest from the start to put excess on and try to smooth in one or two strokes moving in the same direction and then carefully clean the edges. If you are going to do this, I also suggest using a sealant around the edges of the chip before applying anything to the chip, to safeguard it from shorting due to seeping. This especially goes for Liquid Metal.
@TechnologyHive

I do not recommend using liquid metal over a chipplet design gpu. It's a bad idea.

So many issues, I have the XFX version and the vapour chamber is not flat in the very centre so no matter what you do it doesn't cool the die complex evenly, GCD in particular. The chiplet is not even so most paste pumps out over time and heating cycles. with my uneven die and stock cooler the GCD was always high while the MCD was cooled for about a week by paste, I have a tube of every premium paste out there! my solution was Kryosheet and a water cooler, and I needed two layers of the sheet to make good contact across the GCD and MCD, bought the large size and the first layer is a continuous rectangle while the second layer is two smaller rectangles from the leftover sheet. Looking at the hotspot temp is not good enough, one needs to isolate the GCD and MCD and mem junction and address all three. for me the uneven vapour chamber required a water block, the uneven die complex needed two layers of kryosheet and the memory needed gelid extreme 1mm or tp3 1.5mm the tp-3 is very soft so it conforms really well, gelid is just better if it makes good contact. card idles at 33 die and 54 mem junction and speedway on a 30 min loop takes me to 73 die and 84 mem junction, ambient air is at 30+ where I live so take 5 or 6 degrees away if you live in a 20ish degree environment. Was still cheaper than a 4090 where I live. i completely agree that for 1kusd one shouldn't have to do any of this. planned failure, poor design, most don't care to hunt the issues so what are you going to do if you buy the halo product, send it back or fix, if you send it back then you have to ask for a refund as the problem will most likely happen again if you replace with the same.
@TechnologyHive

This is why I did not return mine. The 7900XTX is hands down a bargain for the price/performance ration. So replacing the thermal paste and pads makes the more sense if you are comfortable doing this effectively. MX-6 is a perfect choice for paste.
@riazpatel5296
@riazpatel5296 3 месяца назад
@@TechnologyHiveAgreed, MX-6 gave me the best die performance on air, but I think that my stock cooler didn't aid things, when I went to water the Kryosheet was on par with mx-6, however two layers of the sheet gave me amazing consistency across all the MCD and GCD and a 3 degree delta between hotspot and GPU temp as reported in adrenalin or HWinfo, I have seen cooler mem junction temps from others on various forums with water but after ripping the card apart over 15 times i am happy where i am at now, still have a tube of KP that i haven't opened though:)

@@TechnologyHive I'm gonna put my findings here as this being the only TUF disassembly vid I might aswell share my experience for anyone else dropping by: So I opted to use PTM from aliexpress instead of paste, just buying from whatever seller has the best ratings and most units sold seems to be the safest bet. Saw an immediate improvement to thermals. Prior to the repaste my temps in cyberpunk were about 50c/84c edge/hotspot with the fans ramping to 1800rpm. now it's about 56c/76c and the fan staying at 1000rpm. Edge temps would creep a couple extra degrees but the hotspot just hangs out at 76. Apparently this is only meant to get better as the ptm heat cycles and fills in extra gaps but i'm already happy with the results. When I first bought this card near the end of november 2023 my hotspot delta was closer to 26c. Judging by reports from practically every other AIB this increase in thermals is a matter of when rather than if. YOU WILL HAVE TO REPASTE YOUR 7900XTX CARD. And probably the 7800xt too as thats also chiplet based. rma'ing will only delay the inevitable and in my case - would have to be done every 2-3 months if you actually care about the cooler you bought.

Sapphire fucked me over. I have the 7900 XTX Pulse, and have a 20-25C delta, with hotspot hitting 105-110C in certain games, even with GPU utilization only at 70%. Showed everything to Sapphire and they basically shrugged and said "Go contact your seller." I went to Newegg, attempted to tell them same thing and that Sapphire referred me to them, and Newegg said "Its past the 30 day period, no returns are accepted." "I don't want to return it, I want to warranty it. It's within the manufacturer's 1 year warranty." "You didn't buy a warranty from us; please contact the manufacturer." *ends chat* Cool. I just recently purchased the AMD RX-7900-XTX and received it yesterday. Upgraded from a NGreedia GTX-1070-Ti. I don't know what software you use to get the numbers on the screen to find out my delta. Anyway, I put the card through a massive test by putting it through all the 3D-Mark test twice on each test. Also tested it on Geekbench and Cinebench 2024. This is the second time I have ever owned an AMD GPU, the first time was back in 2002, then I changed to NGreedia when the GTX-1070-Ti came out. And yesterday was the day I stopped using the 1070-Ti. The 1070-Ti survived hurricane Sandy in NYC as my computer was underwater. I cleaned it after it was 2 days underwater. And still works even today. Anyway, I didn't know this about AMD cards. 🤷‍♀ I have the same exact AMD card. Would like to know what software you use to get those numbers on the screen.

A couple months ago I was building a PC for a mate and I also got the 7900XT Phantom Gaming OC for him. The Temperatures where very good. 59 GPU Edge and 79 Hotspot max, with only 1200 RPM on the cooler, which keeps the noise under control. So the cooler works really good. Only the Thermal Paste coverage isn't always that great. But that can be an issue with every brand. For my taste I wouldn't go with Asus on a Radeon, there I would prefere Sapphire or Powercolor. @Greenalex89
@Greenalex89 6 месяцев назад
@@TechnologyHive Id guess the surface is not perfectly even. I think "Northwestrepair" mentioned it in one of his repair videos about AMD cards in general. Nontheless Nvidia is much stricter in terms of pricing towards their AIBs, so those have to cut every corner to make some profit, whereas AMD is way less strict. Meaning, if the AIB is not super greedy its more likely to expect higher quality components on AMD custom models.
@TechnologyHive
@TechnologyHive 6 месяцев назад
@Greenalex89 In my opinion, I believe the issue lies with the chipplet design. If you look at the surface of the core design when all is clean, you'll notice deviations in the light reflection, meaning they are not all perfectly flush with one another. But using a good paste will definitely help.
@PyromancerRift
@PyromancerRift 5 месяцев назад
@@TechnologyHive I think i found another flaw in the design. You may have not encoutered that issue since you use the card vertically. After moving to a new case, i found out that the temps went 5c hotter. So, i went back to the old case (i got multiple cases, don't ask questions...) and the temps went instantly to 95c. I am cautious, i don't bang or force when i handle the card. I tried outside the case with a riser, same temps. So, i opened it to see how the paste was doing (i repasted a few weeks ago and the temps were good). I was greeted by the same patern you had on yours, but worse. Left side thick paste, right side no paste. So i added a goop of paste, and temps went back to 80 on the hotspot (i was heavy handed on the first repaste, there were a ton of it, it have been pushed to the sides). I think the support bracket that is built in modern GPUs, the one passively cooling the VRM, is overbuilt on this GPU. It goes all around it and screw to the fin stack to the sides. I think this method put pressure on the fin stack because the craftsmanship is not as precise as it needs to be. By screwing the fin stack to the bracket, it pull the fin stack away from the board. It makes it very sensitive to any horizontal bending of the card. When i assembled the card back, i didn't screw the shroud surrounding the fans, it is this part that screw to the fin stack through the bracket. I think without it, the card could bend a bit without pulling on the fin stack. This is crazy that you could fuck your card up just by manipulating it normally.

I bought the exact same card in last December and started to see the hotspot rising drastically in February, in just 2 months from purchase. Everything was still within spec but i knew it was going to get out of control sooner or later, hotspot at the time was 100'C under stock 375W load in a very good airflow case. Ended up selling the card instead of opening it up due to voiding the warranty and not being exactly crafty with my hands. Even going on with it and RMA'ing it for a new one, the problem would just repeat itself sooner or later. Damn shame, because i really liked the performance of the XTX for the money, i paid 999€ for a brand-new one but experiences like this will only taint your trust.

Soldering process is through a oven making all parts on pcb sink in its own soldering spot. GPU should be put on by a heating proces with a machine who makes constant pressure on GPU to make it even until all balls under GPU are melted and GPU is even with PCB and not with +- 0,1 mm. Many more Asus and Asrock gpu will come with hotspots. I have stopped buying Asus and Asrock products because of NO quality control and cheap manufacture process, wich is also the reason we saw several motherboards catching fire due to a chip was mounted upside down for a skyhigh price . I will never return to Asus or Asrock With AMD GPU go after Sapphire . Sapphire is for AMD what EVGA was to Nvidia.

If people tell their temps, what should we believe? Was it in controlled environment? Case closed? Full wattage? 100% usage? Heaven, furmark, in-game? What settings they use. Without repaste and/or repad the memory. Baiscally every card should have horrible temps on stock pastes and pads unless you live in the Antartica. It should be illegal for people to tell their temps without a proven set of requirements that explain your temps. I mean, maybe some of y'all play games like genshin impact wich can run on 10c core and 20c hotspot and 20c memory for all I know. Regulate this! Where is the SEC for computing when u need them! :P
@TechnologyHive

The question is the delta difference for the hotspot. 25-30c is a huge margin. For this card, this is common to see and it is, imo, due to AMD's chiplett design.

25 degree delta is horrible. That would make RMA the card honestly. I just bought a 4070 TI Super, and it has a 15 degree difference in temp/hotspot and that already makes me uncomfortable, but I can live with it.
@TechnologyHive

My 4070 ti had a similar hotspot delta. Even after changing the thermal paste. It most likely has to do with DIE not being perfectly leveled on the pcb, as I have shown in one of my previous videos. Sad.

Bro, i only see 375W power ussage and loud coil whine noise is super loud. 4080 has 250W+ power consumption in gaming. What is this AMD gpu? 💀
@TechnologyHive
@TechnologyHive 6 месяцев назад
This is the RX 7900XTX. Coil whine is common with these GPU's, particularly in certain games more than others. In most games there is no coil whine. I hear it mostly with Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

@TechnologyHive
@TechnologyHive 6 месяцев назад
@@d4nith3 I have a 4090, a 4080, this 7900xtx, a 7900xt and other cards I use for video editing and testing. I like the AMD software over NVIDIA's. For this reason I keep it in my main machine. The only issue I had with it was the hotspot. But now that is fixed, and the card works perfectly! I don't see in anyway "negative sides" with it, other than cost. But it is faster than the 4080 in most games and costs a lot less than my 4090 which currently sits on my shelf looking pretty. The 4080 consumes around 310w, while my 4090 consumes 415w during gaming. My 7900XT consumes 320w, and the 7900XTX hovers around 360w-370w. All these cards are power hogs. But I still prefer the 7900XTX.
@d4nith3
@d4nith3 6 месяцев назад
@TechnologyHive It depends on the game, for example in Tlou1 the 4080 beats the 7900xtx while consuming 260w vs 360w. But in most cases the 7900xtx has more fps while using more power and generating more heat so its understandable that he wins. For 1557€ i could buy an RTX4080 Rog Strix while the a Sapphire 7900XTX Vapor-X is 1145€ but the nvidia is the clear choice because on the long run u will pay more for the electricity bill with the amd gpu. So on the long run nvidia wins. The other "negative side " of the 7900xtx is that amd gpus doesn't have, can't do Physics, only nvidia gpus can so in ur case ur cpu has to do the PhysX. In nvidia control panel i can set the Phyx to be handled by the gpu so on the cpu has less stress.
@TechnologyHive
@TechnologyHive 6 месяцев назад
@@d4nith3 PhysX goes back to 2006, originally created by Ageia, which later merged with Nvidia. This is nothing new or better in terms of performance. Physics and game logic are handled by the CPU on both Nvidia or AMD GPU's. Certain games which support PhysX benefit from it, but makes little difference as far as performance goes. You can test this yourself by toggling between GPU or CPU physics in the Nvidia control panel and you will notice 0 difference. Most modern CPU's are powerful enough to handle this well. As far as power consumption goes in the long run, I don't think this is a deterring factor when it comes to GPU selection as long as it is justified by better performance. Overall, AMD's software is superior to Nvidia's, and you do not need to create an account to use it, as with Nvidia. Look, I like both brands and I own many of their GPU's. in the end, you have to purchase what makes sense for you, not some random guy on RU-vid. 👍
