Interesting. For balance, I've never had a problem with the fingerprint sensor - first time, every time, left or right thumb. Takes about half a second to unlock. Not noticed any heat but I don't really game. Haven't used the camera much yet. Sound is awesome - loud and clear from speakers and headphone jack. Connects really fast to android auto. Loving it.

I tried readding fingers many times to make sure it wasn't a one time thing and it kept happening, sometimes it works fine, but more often than not I need like 3 tries to unlock it. The heating problem is really severe only in demanding games, I talk about this since I've had many requests to cover this in the past. Camera takes getting used to, but it's workable, audio is definitely its biggest strength.

Guys, as per many requests I've tested some games after the recent update (version 30.11.51.57). The phone still gets hot under heavy stress (Genshin Impact is a good example, it really puts the CPU under heavy load), I'm not saying it's unusable but it's definitely an inconvenience, maybe it has improved a little bit after the update but not by much. If you don't play games like that or it doesn't bother you that much, you don't have to worry about anything! The phone is still a fantastic performer and I haven't noticed the heat affecting the performance in any way (throttling, stutters etc.). It doesn't heat up in lighter games at all. With that being said, I can't speak for other people claiming they have no problems with the phone heating up, maybe they received the phones straight from the manufacturer, my unit is a retail one, I bought it myself, I also had a second one for a brief time just to check up and it has shown similar symptoms. Keep that in mind while making a purchase decision, it's still a great phone, take care! EDIT: New update (ver. 30.11.51.60) greatly improved the fingerprint scanner, it's both faster and much more reliable, nice to see Asus working actively on improving the experience, one of my biggest gripes with the phone is pretty much gone now!

just because the phone gets hot while you playing heavy load of game like genshin impact does it mean the thermal management of zenfone 8 is not good according to ashe of cnet. the heat is natural in smartphones because the Cpu and Gpu perform hardly especially if you are playing a graphic demanding games. the cpu and the gpu double its performance to sustain the smoothness of graphics and performance so you dont see fps drops or lags. and according again to ashe of cnet. there are two ways for controlling the heat one is to control it by adjusting the graphics into medium or low so that the gpu and cpu didn't force to perform hard on a intense graphic game and the second is the super basic spreading of heat. yeah spreading of heat is natural because of the heat pipe inside. according to tech chap zenfone 8 has a heat pipe. and also the new snapdragon 888 chipset is also heating up in other android devices like Xiaomi or One plus or asus rog phone 5 or black shark or even the nubia red magic
@MRVLTECH
@MRVLTECH 3 года назад
@@boyyoutube7939 There is a difference between just hot and VERY hot. Most of the phones will get hot when you play demanding games, but Zenfone is hotter than most. Mi 11 also has a heating problem while the Mi 11 Pro with revised heating solution doesn't heat up as much. The CPU and GPU should ideally downclock to avoid excessive heating, there is definitely performance surplus with the 888.

Objective. I have the phone and sd888 was really unnecessary here. They could achieve even lower price and be more competitive with 865 or 870. Fp sensor is getting better but it isn't perfect. To be fair, none under display are. Even those on Sony (side) aren't perfect. I chose zenfone 8 bcs in my country it is significantly cheaper than the rest and has awesome speakers and fine 3.5, though not on LG lvl.

Looks like those issues you mentioned are all can be resolved by software update. 1. Heat: Asus may probably come up with fix that tone down CPU performance to retain cooler device all the time. 2 finger scan sensitivity: I saw these issues occurred many times even in devices like Huawei and again they managed to resolved via software updates so Asus should be able to do so. 3: Auto focus issue: Again, can also be fixed via software update. Hopefully Asus take in your review and do something about those issues. Good to know.

The s20 fe is a good option still, but samsung is notorious for dropping support for their models very early. The sony xperia 5 iii and zenfone 8 are both very good contenders. Personally, I'll be going for the zenfone 8 since the form factor and durability is top notch. Im sure the xperia will have more features, so if you like those, I'd say opt for the xperia

I ordered one of these a week ago (8/256GB), and it should show up sometime next week. I've heard extremely mixed opinions on the battery, so hearing you got 6-7 hours of SOT at 120hz is encouraging. Less encouraged by the oil-painting effect in some shots, the dodgy fingerprint reader, and the heating, though I'm wondering if the heating's only an issue if you play a lotta high-intensity games. Curious to know: What's the sound and volume quality like via the headphone jack?

The heating problem is only really severe in demanding games, I talk about this since I've had many requests to cover this in the past. Sound via jack is really good aswell, no complaints there, it's obviously not the level of a good amp, but will be enough to drive most lower impedance headphones.

excellent review, highly appreciated. as of now my purchasing decision on this phone rests on a single variable: whether or not the USA release will include Band N41 5G. Asus stumbled in adding B41 LTE but not N41 5G, as the former has forcibly morphed to the latter via T-Mobile purchasing Sprint. however ASUS told Android Police that they are reexamining that decision. i already figured the phone would get blazing hot, so im looking at the electric phone cooling attachments sold on Amazon...for when pushing the phone at home. your fingerprint reader comments were sobering, that might drive me crazy...but the speakers are VERY important to me, and between audio, specs, and total price, for me this phone will likely trump the Xperia 5 Mk3... ...as long as it supports N41. ASUS PLEASE!

most of it I agree. But when de refresh rate is on the lowest setting, the battery last much longer. Even several days when most of the programs are off. A other advantage is the small amount of bloatware. The most of the programs you can remove it and/or the lack of it. And I hate bloatware, this was for me the main reason to buy this phone

Very troubling are the Asus support and service that lurks behind. During 2020 and 2021 they were the worst I have ever experienced, in any industry and for any product. Timeline: - Jan 2020: I buy new Zenfone. - Aug 2020: Phone no longer charges, on any charger including Zenfone’s supplied charger. The charging port in the phone is not working. - Aug 2020: Still under warranty, I mail the Zenfone to the ASUS repair center in Grapevine, Texas. This is an unnecessarily complicated process. For example, Zenfone’s support keeps assuming I purchased a laptop, and tries to communicate with me about laptop repair. - November 2020: I receive the Zenfone, apparently repaired. (But the data on my phone has been wiped out.) - March 2021: My Zenfone stops working completely. No power, no blue screen, nothing. - March 2021: ASUS assures me I will be charged only a diagnostic fee of $85, to have the phone assessed and then repaired. - March 2021: ASUS then tells me I’m no longer under warranty, which ended in Jan 2021. - March 2021: ASUS then tells me I am still under warranty, which was extended because of the previous problem with the Zenfone in 2020. - April 2021: I again mail the Zenfone to the ASUS repair center in Grapevine, Texas. - April 2021: ASUS then tells me I’m in fact not under warranty any more. - April 2021: ASUS then tells me actually I am under warranty, which was extended for an additional 3 months. - April 2021: ASUS then tells me I’m in fact not under warranty, which supposedly expired “2 December 2020”. - April 2021: ASUS then tells me my warranty in fact expired on “8 March 2021”. - April 2021: I ask to escalate the issue. (At this point, ASUS Customer Service is already the worst I have experienced, ever, for any product in any industry.) - April 2021: ASUS maintains that my warranty is expired, but offers me a “20% discount” off their fee to repair the dead phone, which is $289. I ask to get a better deal, given what I’ve had to go through in owning this ASUS product. ASUS tells me they will check with their Corporate dept. - April 2021: ASUS calls me back, telling me they can take 30% off the fee, to repair the dead phone. - April 2021: ASUS then sends me an invoice for the full amount of $289, with no discount. Also, the invoice description of the problem is wrong, as it says “Hangs on ASUS logo” (instead the phone does not respond at all). I call ASUS and ask them to correct the invoice. - April 2021: ASUS then sends me a new invoice for this repair, for an even higher fee of $362. The invoice also states a completely different problem: it includes a $97 item (plus tax) and a $243 item (plus tax) both for “abnormal appearance (deformation/scratches/damage/paint removal/dirt/rough edges)”. I call to tell ASUS it should be lower, as we had discussed. And to tell ASUS my phone was not physically abnormal or damaged in any way, when I had sent it to their repair center. And that this new invoice is completely different from their prior invoice. (At this point, it is becoming apparent to me that what is happening at ASUS here is not merely total incompetence, poor training and poor management, but possibly something worse.) - April 2021: ASUS contacts me to say they erred, and should have sent me an invoice for $231. I then correct them again, saying no that would be only a 20% discount off the repair fee. ASUS had told me my discount was 30% off (for $216). - April 2021: During these interactions, I keep having to tell ASUS that my phone is to be repaired at the discounted rate, but nevertheless ASUS keeps sending me e-mails stating that my phone will be sent back to me unless I pay the (undiscounted, incorrect) invoice amount within 5 days of the invoice date. Repeatedly ASUS assures me that my phone will not be sent back to me, that it is on track to be repaired at the rate they had agreed to, and that I will no longer receive these e-mails pressuring me to pay within 5 days. Yet, the e-mails are not stopped, they keep coming. - May 2021: ASUS sends me another invoice for the incorrect, higher amount ($362) and the incorrect problem: “abnormal appearance (deformation/scratches/damage/paint removal/dirt/rough edges)”. - May 2021: I contact ASUS, escalate the issue, and ASUS tells me they will have someone contact me in 24-48 hours. 24-48 hours pass by, with no call from ASUS. Meanwhile, ASUS continues to send me invoices, and a payment deadline, for the incorrect rate of $362. - May 2021: I contact ASUS again, escalate the issue. ASUS assures me that they will stop sending me e-mails asking for payment of $362, and will contact me about correcting it. - May 2021: ASUS “Proactive Care” sends me an e-mail stating that an internal failure to correct the invoice “has triggered the return of your device unrepaired”. The e-mail also states that once I receive my unrepaired Zenfone, I can re-create the return, ship the phone BACK to ASUS (at no shipping cost to me) and “continue this process”. (I’m thinking, Uh… no thanks.) - May 2021: Sure enough, I then receive the Zenfone, returned to my home by ASUS. Unrepaired and dead. To all: enjoy your ASUS experience.

It just takes a bit longer than most phones, so you unconsciously take off your finger faster than you should. (I use samsung s20 fe previously with super fast finger scanner). I use this phone purely for work (gmail, drive, asana, calendar, slack, notion, telegram, whatsapp, discord) and some youtube watching during bathroom breaks. Lasted me the whole day.

Yeah, if you're looking for a newer phone that will get longer support, sure, P30 is stuck at Android 10 so it's a good time to upgrade, you might not be super satisfied with the camera (P30 had a great one for its time) but other than that, it's a straight upgrade. Up to you whether you feel like you need a new phone since the P30 is still a good device and it should still work alright as far as performance goes.

Good review. I've heard that phonecall quality is bad and fingerprint sensor not very reliable. The heating issue is very worrisome; I would only feel comfortable buying this phone if Asus has very reliable and accommodating service options for sending in phone for problems.

@MRVLTECH 3 года назад
Had no problems with phonecall quality, fingerprint scanner got better after a couple of updates. Heating was an issue for sure but only really relevant under heavy stress. As for the support, can't say anything about Asus phones but Asus PC part support has been mediocre in my experience.

@@MRVLTECH Thanks -- for me, the biggest hesitation I have with a phone like this is the service issue, if I buy an iPhone or a Pixel, I know there's a good service structure in place to handle my problem. With Asus, I wouldn't know where to begin, and my instincts tell me that I'd end having to ship to to Taiwan or something. In other words: major pain in the a55

I'm a big fan of Asus's Zenfone Series. I've owned the 5z, 6, and now the 7Pro. My only gripe with the 6 was the extraordinarily low screen brightness capability, as well as just, 60hz, whereas my only real gripe with the 7 is the extraordinarily heavy weight (top-heavy, especially, uncomfortable to hold) and general large size. The z8 theoretically fixes all my issues (besides lack of flip-cam). But my main concerns with the Zenfone8 which I haven't really had addressed in comparison to the other phones in the series is the battery life & screen brightness. Have you tested the Zenfone7 Pro? You're saying you get a solid 6+ hours of screen-on-time on the z8? That's what I get on my z7Pro running pretty much max brightness all day, 90hz, max performance, which, has ~1,400mah higher capacity (z8 is 3600mAh, 4000mAh rated) Are you running similar settings? Also how's the screen brightness? Any visibility issues in bright bright daylight? I'm sorry for the excessively long comment, but I really did appreciate the video, subbed & liked, and would be super grateful to have these questions answered. Thank you!
@MRVLTECH
@MRVLTECH 3 года назад
Hey, prepare yourself for an excessively long response then :) I haven't had the Zenfone 7 Pro so can't compare too much, as far as battery, I would say I've been getting usually solid 6 hours of SOT, but not much more, like I said, I haven't had the phone die mid-day so that's enough for me given its size. As for the brightness, GSMArena does lab tests and they measured max 800 nits on the Zenfone 8 (741 for the 7 Pro in comparison), as far as my experience goes, the brightness is usually at around 70-80% for me on daily use, of course outside it goes to auto max brightness. It's not ultra bright under direct sunlight but good enough, even the brightest screens will struggle in bright daylight so the Asus is no different, but it did the job for me. I have no problems answering questions for the stuff that I didn't touch on in the video. I actually do that purposely, I don't want my videos to just be another person with a checklist that just goes through every spec of the phone in the same order over and over - okay screen is blabla, battery life is blabla, camera etc. I like to think who a certain device is geared towards and then build my whole video around it, touching on the things that the manufacturer thought would be the most important features. Then I also add my observations about certain things that either pleasantly surprised me or just didn't work as intented. This is why for example I didn't really talk about the screen in this video, it just wasn't anything that I found interesting or relevant enough, if it was exceptionally dim or super bright, I would have mentioned it. It's a good screen, that's all. There are many other reviewers who will go through every spec of the phone and I'd like people to understand that my videos won't really look like that, I'd rather talk about the things that I feel like are worth talking about and try to share the excitement (or the lack of it) with you guys. Thanks for the kind words!

@@MRVLTECH Sweet! Okay! That gives me a pretty good idea. Also I dig that ideology which is why I hit that sub button, I like the format. I watched probably 5 videos before I found yours where you actually talked about SOT rather than breezing over capacity, charge wattage, and full charge speed, I get that those are important, but, on daily use, if the battery is good, charge time means much less to me. I do have one other question though! How's the vibration motor? It was sub-par on the 6 but is a JOKE on the 7, like, hands down the worst haptics/vibration strength on any phone I've ever had. Thank you for reaching back out so quickly and thoughtfully!

While you're right regarding the 888, I believe it's the Zenfone 8 major selling point. Opting for the lesser Snapdragon sibling would have resulted with nothing to brag about and minimal interest. BTW, the Samsung S21 has the Exynos 2100 (internationally) which is inferior to the 888 and gets much hotter....
@MRVLTECH
@MRVLTECH 3 года назад
Yeah, you could be right about that, probably more of a marketing move. As for the S21, the 2100 is actually not that bad, CPU cores are great, only the GPU is poor, next year when they drop Mali it should become great. Still it's not as big of a deal-breaker as with the S20 generation.

Hi, Can you please help me choose between the Asus zenfone 8 and the Samsung s20fe 5g? I am interested in the battery life and a good camera. In Australia they are priced similarly, but asus with 8gb ram and s20fe with 6gb ram. I have an Asus phone at the moment. It's good, but hoping that Samsung's software updates and security system would be better than Asus.
@MRVLTECH
@MRVLTECH 3 года назад
Sure. Battery life is fairly similar, neither is amazing, they will last you a day and not much more, also both charge pretty slowly by today's standards, FE does however have wireless charging. I would say the main camera is slightly better on the Zenfone, atleast I prefer the look of the photos more, Samsung has some optical reach with the 3x but I found the Zenfone shows very good digital zoom quality up to like 5x aswell, so again it's fairly close, the Samsung is probably more versatile, the ultrawide is pretty poor on both. Update wise I would say Samsung is safer for sure, with Asus there is a bit of uncertainty whether they will support the phone in the long run, based on their past. Myself, I would choose the Zenfone, I think in the end it's up to you whether you want the smaller, faster phone with some overheating issues and a fairly bland looks or the bigger, plastic, solid albeit pretty typical Samsung phone. Hope that helps!

Not exactly, I've used many other phones with 888 already and none of them had such severe heating issues. Zenfone problems are all about putting a powerful chip into such a small body and designing a proper cooling solution. Yes, it is a very hot chip, but other phones handle it better, Mi 11 was hot, Mi 11 Pro not so much, Realme GT 5G I'm testing now also doesn't heat up nearly as much as the Zenfone 8.
