This phone isn't supposed to be your camera king but it is the ultimate value proposition for 2021. Seeing how OnePlus have ruined themselves by running behind the money, I'm loving how Asus is filling the "Quality King" gap.

I'm currently using the standard Samsung galaxy s7 and I was looking for either the S10 or G8 due to size and 3.5mm, but this! This will work just as well!

The normal 8 is a really tempting phone, especially with the snapdragon 888. And you still get the charging brick on top of that

Asus has been killing it recently! ROG phone 5, G14/15, Flow and now these Zenfones! Great couple of years from them.

This phone truly seems like the phone to get in 2021. Amazing hardware compared with great software in a smaller package. If they tweak the camera software a bit when they release it they truly have become the flagship killer of 2021. Great work Asus.

A proper GCam mod will definitely do the trick. I use it on the ROG Phone 2 and it trade blows even with an iPhone SE 2020

Asus has seemingly nailed it with the Zenfone 8. The only thing missing is a telephoto camera even if just 2x. Waiting for it to be released in India.

Beautifully summed up in the review! I am on the lookout for a new phone and this phone - with its very reasonable size - hits the sweet spot. Unfortunately, I am also a hipster hippie kind of a person who loves to take a LOT of photos of random objects and doodads and the camera is a bit of a downer. Considering the price, would it be possible to compare its camera with the S20 FE? I understand that they are different segments but these two are squarely in my budget and I don't want to look at Chinese phones.

Zenfone 7 pro - same scary softening issues as you mentioned. With Gcam installed you can make some pretty decent photos though. Thanks for the honest review!

I went from a big heavy phone to a smaller Pixel 5 last year and as I have smaller hands, it's better for me. Truth be told, this phone sounds like it has everything to offer and for the price, it is pretty spectacular. I know the camera might not be a great as the Pixel 5, but for everyday use or apps that may help the camera, I think its very competitive, which we want to see. Its a shame LG has stopped, but maybe Asus might step into its place and drive more competition to give us consumers more choice. 👏👏👏👏

This actually sounds like the perfect size for me. I miss the s4. Was the perfect size. But besides price what keeps me from buying it is the lack of micro sd support 😥

I absolutely love this phone. Inetially i found the camera placement weird but it grew on me.

I was waiting for a replacement for my LG V40 and Essential PH1. This phone is it. My Essential PH1 is 5.8 inch, no wireless charging, only IP54 rating, no expandable storage so this is an upgrade. To this day my Essential phone camera is good enough so I have no complaints. Good job Asus.

As of the last couple of years the rhetoric surrounding large phones is that to have good battery you need a large phone, to have a flagship you need a large, expensive phone…no you don’t, in contrast, the battery life from an iPhone 12 Mini won’t beat the battery life in the Galaxy S21U, but contrary to popular belief the 12 Mini still has adequate battery life for many people out there, not everybody needs the most expensive….it’s great to see ASUS providing everything from Aluminium, G/Glass, SD888 and upto 16GB RAM inside a smaller phone now all for £699, all of which Samsung found incapable of having inside the vanilla S21 at its starting price of £769

I'm still running my zenfone 5 that I bought for $450. Asus does well to get it's phones up to date. Would I spend nearly $600 for a slight upgrade,I don't think so. If this phone was closer to $350-450 maybe. It's not like the upgrade is a massive difference but it is a 3 generational difference.

If they just made it 5.2 inches I'd be sold. It's still pretty big comparing with ip mini and my Xperia xz1c

They could have gone for Snapdragon 870 5g so that they could reduce its pricing to somewhere around 450-475 euros.

i have been leaving comments and writing emails to literally all mobile phone manufacturers pointing out the void of one-handed flagship in the market. whoever finally realized it. thank you so much. i am currently using a pixel 4a. if this phone released a few months back i would have got myself one for sure. good job asus.

Thanks a lot for a great review!! I'm so excited for this phone but really picky about the camera so not too sure after your vid. I don't need the highest specs - why is it so complicated to get a palm sized phone that doesn't smooth out your skin and make you several shades lighter (as a person of color) than what you are?! IMO Nokia's older mid and upper range phones are great for this, but their user support is truly awful 😔

Acquired it on tuesday, I love it so far. This baby reminds me my old Samsung Galaxy Ace spartphone, because of carbon style cover, size and weight. It's a pleasure to finally not feel anymore the phone tapping your hip when going upstairs, or just folding down ! OK, battery flies away when a game is launched, same for the heat, but still, it is worth it.

Does it heat up after a prolonged use? Like, uncomfortable to hold kind of hot?

I love it!, I need it!, the size it’s the best, I hate phones becoming huge tiles, we move from 90s bricks to have tiles in the 2020s, love it, the camera is good, honestly for the day to day usage is more than enough.

I do respect the production of a smaller flagship phone, despite the fact that Zenfone 8 has kept most of the essential feature of a top smartphone selling in the market, but it has taken away the function most of the people switching from iPhone - the micro-sd card slot (Zenfone 5 user) Seems that we have to wait for an even more compatible small smart phone after a huge advance in the battery tech, hence it can fit in more feature we're hopping for in a more compact size.

I love Bath except for rush hour traffic. Looking good when the weather is fine! Had bad experience withASUS so no thanks, but the design and form factor is great and right mix and match of specs with competitve pricing so def a worthy contender for the £500-600 price range if you are looking for a smaller phone.Cheers!

This is the perfect phone for me. I've been looking for a compact flagship phone. The only compact phones on the market is iPhone 12 mini, pixel 5 and Sony Xperia 5

Right now, this looks like the only phone on the market close to my ideal specs: compact(ish) form factor, headphone jack, near-stock UI, notification LED, OIS. I'd prefer a lower spec (7xx) processor for a better battery life/performance trade-off (don't care about phone gaming), the jack would be better placed on the bottom, SD card expansion wouldn't have gone amiss, and I'd prefer if it were about as small as a Samsung S10e, but it ticks many more boxes than the overwhelming majority of phones in 2021. Pretty sure the camera processing issues could be fixed with a good GCam mod. At least with flagship- and midrange-phone cameras , it's usually the stock software that keeps the hardware from displaying its full potential. Still digging my 2016 ZUK Z2 Pro in 2021(custom ROMs work wonders at extending longevity and unlocking potential), but this would likely be my first choice if I needed to replace it. Nice opener, BTW. 😆

Despite the lack of microSD card support and only using USB-C 2.0, this can easily be a worthy compact spiritual successor to the LG V60. Just about the only thing that stops me from buying this ASUS is the Sony Xperia 5 Mk3.

I've been searching for a good spec smaller phone for a few months now. My current one is a motorola E4 which is 5.7inch. great little phone but slowing down and missing that speed and smoothness of the latest models. I'm buying this zenfone after watching this review. Great phone at an incredible price and size. Is it worth paying an extra near £200 just for a slightly better camera and 6.5ish inches alternatives lol nah Going to order once I've found the cheapest vendor. Thanks again!

Wireless charging maybe a miss..but expansion memory slot can't be considered a miss because even most of its other competition with larger build also doesn't have one..

It's great to see phone manufacturers not chasing after camera specs and putting the budget to other areas, since the majority of people aren't professional photographers, I've seen tons of everyday people who buy flagships from Huawei and Samsung just to get a phone that won't lag but these people genuinely do not know how to utilize the cameras to their full potential, if at all. Consumers shouldn't be forced to pay for premium prices just because manufacturers stuff unnecessary specs inside the phone. Good on Asus to bring the 888 into a normal, everyday phone.

You can just see how easy it to make a good smartphone. Flat display, good processor, headphone back, good battery, good software, perfect. And these brands are still throwing bs with hasselbad and shit.

Why is everyone bemoaning the lack of wireless charging? It's a gimmick and a misnomer. The phone still has to be docked on the charger, so essentially it's no different to plugging in a cable.

Tech Reviewers calling it boring design but I really like how the ZenFone 8 looks... simple, clean, minimal with matte finish.
