This is very interesting. I did a similar experiment, using a larger set of motors. If I remember, about 1/4 HP motors. The capacitor value was very specific, and the motor speed was also very specific. If the speed was too slow, it would never self-excite. If it was high enough, it would self-excite. I could get more than rated voltage from the motor, but the voltage was load dependent. It would provide more than 200W from the asynchronous generator from a 1/4 HP motor. I need to do a video about this. I still have the motors used for this test.

In order for an asynchronous generator to produce power, it must rotate at supersynchronous speed, increased by the amount of slip. Example: no-load engine speed 1440 RPM --> required speed for generator operation 1560 RPM.

It is known that asynchronous generators can be operated in island mode. However, their operation is problematic. Frequency and slip depend on the size of the load. An inductive load will often cause de-excitation. The right size of capacity is important. Small single-phase asynchronous motors are unsuitable for this purpose. The reason is their poor efficiency and high winding resistance. Motors with a shielded pole are completely unusable. A sufficient amount of remanent magnetism is essential for the start-up of an asynchronous generator. This can be increased by short running no loaded motor or by connecting it to a DC source.@@liam3284

I have accidentally seen this work. I was running a load with multiple asynchronous motors because I didn't have one powerful enough. I had them power factor compensated, they were compensated to a PF of 1. I was running them of of two different phases for load distribution. I used two single-phase plugs (this was stupid, and made this effect show up). I disconnected one of them, and the plug gave me a shock, then measured the voltage, and it was around 270V. I started experimenting, this generated voltage would only show up when disconnecting one of the motors, so both motors needed to be powered from mains first. I don't think the fact that I used different phases made a difference, but I didn't test that.

As someone pointed out in the comments, the motor can become a generator if it is first powered, then disconnected from the power supply. Another option may be to energize the windings with a battery while the motor is running so that it can be magnetized stronger than the residual magnetism.

Thanks for video. One can use induction motor only providing it reactive power for rotor magnetization. One can easily do this for 3phase motors. 1phase motors either have each pole divided into two, half of which encircled by shorted winding or have two windings, one of which connected through cap to mains. Your motors look like 1phase ones. I think that motor w shorted windings is impossible to start as generator using capacitors due to huge losses in shorted windings. Two windings capacitor motor - maybe, but idk how. Actually both types of motors have so

You need field excitation for it to work. If you want a reasonable constant output voltage, use an AVR (Automatic voltage regulator) found in most gas electric generators, to power the coil. Just like the alternator in the car. Magnets are expensive and lose their mojo under heat with time, electromagnets don't.

Try connecting the generator to mains while it's being turned by the motor, but with a capacitor in parallel (besides the normal auxiliary capacitor). Then remove the mains connection and measure the voltage. Without the capacitor the voltage will ramp down in a few tenths of a second as the flux in the rotor dissipates. Maybe it will work, worth a try. You can find videos of larger 3 phase asynchronous motors used as self excited offline generators. Maybe this motor has too big of a stator resistance to self excite from start.

Oh, you have to show the output waveform. Seems like from what I recall, these really need to be rectified to DC and then inverted to get good stable AC output. Seems loads like a resistance load at first up to like 30-50% continuous output causes bad voltage spikes, though after that the output stabilizes. That's my experience at least with the one asynchronous 2 stroke engine generator I own. I think really is not so great, though the more modern inverter generators using 4 stroke engines seems nice if the super expensive or unobtanium inverter is available cost effectively. Check like the range of resistance loading on. Also, show us using at least a cheap oscilloscope if you can. That would be super awesome! Same goes with an inverter for these motors.

Try using a 9v battery in parallel with the capacitor or with the output to "flash" it while it's running, sometimes that works, although it may be turning too slow... if you have a drill fast enough you can use it to drive the motor. Years ago I used the motor from an air conditioner external unit fan to power LED bulbs using a cordless drill so it's possible.

If you want to use it correctly as a generator and have a real output voltage you have to magnetize it at the start, meaning you use it as a charge at start then disconnect it from the grid then you connect quickly the load on it to keep the magnetic field in the rotor, then the fact that there is a charge will automatically draw current, and here, what you have is : a current created at the stator by the initial magnetic field of the rotor, that current will create a magnetic field opposed to the one that created itself, whitch ensure a big magnetic in the rotor and so the generation of power, basically in eoliens they use a bank of capacitors to create briefly the first magnetic field at the rotor then it sustain itself as i said up

If it's driven at the synchronous speed I guess nothing will happen, but if slightly overdriven would it increase the voltage from the inverter while keeping the frequency, or will they fall out of synchronisation and the inverter goes boom?

an online generator supplies power to mains, while an offline generator just powers a load.
@raconixx3573
@raconixx3573 4 месяца назад
I'm not 100% sure but: usually the motors rpm is a little bit less than mains (slip) -> they need the difference to induce the current inside the rotor. So for being used as an generator u have to exceed the mains frequency. Without an external Island-Grid (connected to the generators output) the rpm of the motor will always be the same than its output voltages frequency. So there is no induction possible because the change of magnetic flux will get to 0. Just my thoughts to it, pls tell me when im wrong. Might not be explained very good xD

I wonder, if you give to one coil some AC, let´s say 12V, without spinning it should work like an 1:1 transformer, right? And if you manage to spin it faster than the slip, to be sychronous with the mains frequency what you will have at output? And if it spin with some multiple of half the speed without slip (like 1.5 speed?). I mean, if to be in sync with the mains frequency it should run at 1440rpm, try running it at 720, 1440, 2160 rpm while powering it with 12V/50Hz. Also, the output voltage is a pure sine wave, I imagine, right?

I bet most of them were/are offline generators, I don't know today but until the 80s most "light towers" used on construction sites had asynchronous generators because those were cheaper and maintenance free. Those were also fine to power things like small concrete mixers, angle grinders and drills that didn't care a lot for the voltage stability. Also the "2 stroke 950w generator" sold today under like *six million brands* 😅is asynchronous too. I think those are clones of the Yamaha ET950. Some have aluminium windings and are rated only for 600W but the shape is more or less the same. Some have also a 12V (unregulated) output to recharge lead acid batteries.
@liam3284
@liam3284 3 месяца назад
I think you will find those 2-stroke machines are synchronous, using "brushless excitation" and one capacitor for voltage regulation.
@ruben_balea
@ruben_balea 3 месяца назад
@@liam3284 Maybe, but the capacitor does the same job as on asynchronous generators, it doesn't regulate anything, that's BS they put on schematics to not have to explain technicians why a capacitor is needed there, the capacitor supplies reactive power for the electromagnetic field that powers the rotor by induction. The bigger the capacitor the higher the output voltage and the more inductive the load is the lower the output voltage will be. To regulate the voltage the only remaining option is to modify the engine speed but that will change the output frequency. If the load is capacitive the output voltage will rise and can damage both the load and the generator itself. That applies to brushed synchronous generators without AVR too, if you put capacitors in parallel with the windings the output voltage will rise. Depending of the design of the AVR system the voltage can skyrocket even with an AVR system present, for that reason some generators can't be used to power buildings with many gas discharge lamps of any kind that use electromagnetic ballasts with PF correction capacitors integrated in the same fixture, because the discharge lamps won't create any inductive load until they start so you can be connecting a massive amount of capacitors to the generator when you turn the lights on, especially if the lights in the entire building are powered on at the same time, as would be the case if the power goes out while the lights are already on and a switch is used to switch the whole building from the grid to the generator.

Motor hooked to generator surrounded by energy saver capacitors. lol Could be on the brink of something big here. Neat idea.

A stepper motor works much better as generator.

Wiring up two stepper motors to each other is a neat trick. If you have two of the same stepper motor you just wire them together color to color then turn one by hand and the other will follow it. Stepper motors work good as generators because they have permanent magnets in them to generate the field. But the drive one stepper motor with another is pretty gee whiz. It definitely entertains for at least as long as it takes to do.

Yes, you should place some magnets in the rotor.

I think you should try to load it. The current should excite the generator even more
