You can see in Empire Strikes Back that the Empire learned from this battle, they increased the main firepower of the AT-AT after seeing it couldn’t adequately knock out a vehicle decades older than it, they increased the side armor to protect against smaller aircraft, and they lowered the overall height to increase stability.
@@chemp231 that would require a complete overhaul in design like lengthening the body, and another set of legs wont help when it can still tip over sideways
Love how Wolffe and Gregor used the remaining AT-AT for a home use in the parts of their old AT-TE to improve it Hell the use of the legs as supports for the landing platform is genius
As cool as the scene was, it was absolutely ridiculous how many direct shots the at-te took from the at-at and still was functioning. One of the strongest plot armor moments in all of Star Wars, and that's saying a lot
they only anti infantry blasters/cannons. those ain't veers' Terror maschines, built to level cities. I can very well understand, why an ancient MBT is still able to withstand more modern anti personnel blasters.
@@codymorris6702 From a certain viewpoint this makes sense. The Empire is widely known for their ego, their overconfidence and impractical weapons and use of resources. They probably felt confident in destroying an old relic from a bygone era with their new, big and shiny machines. The AT-TE was also known to be extremely well armored, with the legs and underbelly being the exception. But all the hits it took were to the armor plates. Also, the guy above COULD be right, as these AT-AT's look different than the ones featured in the films and other media.
Actually they're not the same ATAT we see inthe movies Totally different model if you look at the guns the shape and where they're positioned.. And the legs are much thicker in the movies 1)All Terrain Armored Transport (early rebellion against the Empire) 2)All Terrain Armored Transport (Galactic Civil War) 3)Elite AT-AT. 4)First Order All Terrain Armored Transport.
Fun fact: AT-AT were already use at the end of the clones war, and cohabited with AT-TE for quite a long time. In every occasion they were both represented, AT-AT was shown to be far stronger, many times use when the AT-TE was not able to do it. (But yeah I still prefer AT-TE^^). The two tanks had totally different use and purpose.
One of my favorite things about this is how all the clones look at those walkers and decide to nitpick them in amusement. "Only four legs? How are they not falling over!?" "And would you look at the size of them?!"
Well can you blame them those clones are looking at Imperial Walkers while the one they're in is an AT-TE a relic from the Clone Wars and was the precursor to the AT-AT as both machines were designed and built by the same company.
This is a great example of knowing ones own strengths and weaknesses and the enemies strengths and weaknesses and how to turn a "loosing" or "lost fight" into a draw or level the odds to make you have the advantage. Soviets did this in ww2 vs germany, the soviets desided they would smash their line right onto the german line so that if the germans wanted to use artillery they would have to shell their own men.
FWIW: I have always thought the AT-ATs would make the ultimate RVs. Definitely NOT fast, but being fusion powered they would have almost unlimited range.
Love how these are right from the early designs drawn up for the Empire Strikes back and I always thought this one with more guns was cool! Also the music taking riffs from "Battle in the snow" is awesome!
8:20 we can see that the AT-AT is immune to mines here, a big reason why the AT-TE was retired and replaced by AT-ATs is because AT-TE were vulnerable to mines, rockets and large countermeasures (like the tank barriers on Geonosis)
@@InfiniteNaos it weird, in the battle of both we see AT-AT have stronger blasters that could destroy a Ion cannon and shake the base. Apparently, according to some sources, the AT-AT in rebels are early versions of the AT-AT and only have light blasters. Later ones have heavier cannons, which are supposed as strong as if not stronger than the AT-TE’s mass driver
Two things I love about this: The at-te scenes that take us back go ep5. And the way the clones look at the walkers and ask how they are not falling over with only four legs. I also love how the clones scoff at anything that is empire and not republic, so funny.
I love the fight between the Clones AT-TE and the Empires AT-ATs. The old clashing with the new and how despite the AT-TE's age it gave a good fight. I like the AT-AT's but I grew up on the AT-TE, loved its design and just feel.
I love how Rex hates the new walkers and how poorly designed they are. Imperial walkers were built to be big and scary while republic walkers were built to win battles.
@@tricksor6589 Yeah, I always figured shows that did that were to show that the subordinate was respecting the rank rather than the gender (BSG was probably the biggest example of this since every officer is referred to as Sir with the exception of President Roslin who was Madame President).
@@rockhouse7485agreed. The model in Rebels is known as the scout variant of the ATAT which is boxier and slightly larger than the model deployed on Hoth (i know it’s ironic that a walker THAT big could be ID’d as a scout) It also had a light blaster cannon in an open top turret mount in the back, specifically on the roof. The ATAT’s deployed on and since Hoth did not have these design features
Actually, the AT-AT is definitely the wrong acronym. It should be the NT-AT for No-Terrain-Attack-Tower. Because once it is deposited it would sink into the ground at the very first step, right up to its knee joints. Surface pressure, baby, is a real bitch, especially in anything walking. Us Germans found that out with the Maus tank which weighed around a mere 180 tons and had ultra wide tracks underneath a good 30% of is tank width. It was able to achieve a top speed of around 6km per hour on reinforced concrete. In ANY kind of softer terrain it quickly churned up the ground to become bogged down. An AT-AT is MUCH heavier and places its weight alternatively on different spots with each step which are all significantly smaller in comparison to the Maus' treads proportionately. So after the first step the 'walker' becomes a 'stander', ot in military terms, an immobile target deserving to be flanked as it has no ability to bring its firepower to bear on anything outside the front 90 degree arc. Make it the dumbest transport in history.
I remember playing SW Battlegrounds Clone Wars and playing with the Empire. A mix of AT-AT, AT-PT and AT-ST, with some anti-air units was all that I needed, sometimes a few DarkTroopers Phase 2 added to the mix. I had to invest a lot earlier in defense and booming the economy but when I reached the peak of power... not even the Jedi or traitor Sith that played against me could withstand the might of the Empire technology advance. I will always love those units. I also liked the Droidekas from the Trade Federation. IN regards to the republic walker AT-TE is a nice one as well.
In regards to the ATTE's gun not penetrating the ATAT's armor, I figured it has to do with the nature of the gun itself. The gun is a mass driver, not a blaster cannon, meaning it usually fires a physical shell that is coated in plasma as it leaves the barrel. Given how old this one was, it had likely run out of shells a long time ago and was down to just firing plasma, which, as we know from Empire, "that armor's too strong for blasters". As for why the ATAT's own guns can damage the armor, firstly: they are newer and likely more powerful models than what that ATTE is packing, and second: despite Kanan and Zeb unloading on that other ATAT, it really only causes minor damage to the hull, a bit of spall and some melted plating but the vehicle really isn't crippled until that neck shot by Rex.
Wait hold up, lightsabers can cut a walker's legs? Why didn't Luke just cut the walker's legs off instead of taking the chance of breaking his bones falling from that walker???😳
If we're going with a lore-wise explanation, remember that blast doors can take an eternity to cut through, even with a lightsaber. I'm guessing the later AT-AT models (the Galactic Civil War model seen in ESB and ROTJ) used a similar method of reinforcement for their legs and joints Edit: something else worth noting is that AT-ATs are shielded. The immense punishment from the Ghost's four proton torpedoes might have been enough to permanently put its shields offline, allowing Kanan to cut through the exposed legs
Well this is long before empire strikes back and you can see that they still use at-dp’s, they still have some clones in their ranks, and the at-ats are definitely smaller than the ones in the movies. I wouldn’t be too suprised if these are just earlier models that haven’t been perfected yet. We do see them take multiples from the at-te so they definitely weren’t under armored, they were just armored in the wrong spots
For some reason it always bothered that they can just cut through an entire AT-AT's leg with a lightsaber. I found it hard to believe that an AT-AT's leg is that thin, and then i think back to Empire Strikes Back, well why didn't Luke use his lightsaber to cut through an AT-AT's leg instead of cutting a hole in it's underbelly to toss a bomb in?
Live actions vs animation mostly. Animation is a lot more fluid in making the impossible possible because animation is still 2D artwork no matter how 3D you try to make it. Also it doesn't help the original AT-AT's were actually miniature sculpture/puppets back in the day. Mark Hamill was actually running on open ground, so he had no idea where the legs would eventually be. So he'd have no idea where to even swing the lightsaber.
@@girl1213 I mean, I totally get that. But it still doesn't sit right with me, I can't comprehend something that huge with legs that thin. Even in Phantom Menace with Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were cutting through the dooor, they did it very slowly rather than swiftly like a slice of butter.
possibly because he did not think to do that? even though, by the time of Battle of Hoth occurred, Luke was far better trained than when he was at the Battle of Yavin, he still had not learned to fully seperate himself from his emotions. so, he may not have considered it an option. on top of that, he HAD only just escaped from becoming Wampa lunch, and being frozen to death only hours previously, whereas the jedi here were very much fully healthy, so, despite the bath he took hours previous, I can imagine there was some soreness. also, the I don't care if the force is helping, Hoth is still cold, so that can affect ones ability to function, Luke had just crashed his speeder, lost a friend in said speeder, narrowly avoiding being crushed by a walker.
@@CliffordBreeden I like to consider that the Naboo crisis acted as a wake up call to the Jewish, and that after those events, they adjusted their sabers to better cut through armor
1)All Terrain Armored Transport (early rebellion against the Empire) 2)All Terrain Armored Transport (Galactic Civil War) 3)Elite AT-AT. 4)First Order All Terrain Armored Transport. 4 different models Obviously these aren't the same as what we see in the movies on hoth The positions of the guns and the thickness of the legs are totally different
Hopefully Jazwares make a variant AT-TE like this one. We already know they have the republic AT-TE planned as a dreadnaught class vehicle for the near future.😊
You know how scary it is to be in a sand storm, look out the window and see one of these things walking by? Nothing but the shape and spotlight….and the stomping…
Just looking at the walkers chasing Ezra and the others look like early versions of the All Terrain Armored Transports or they could be the same but of a different design I honestly don't know.
I don't like how they put the firing sound of the AAT over the AT-TE, especially since each tank was on the opposite faction in the Clone Wars. Also why would you ever put the AAT cannon sound over a rocket launcher, of all things (7:40)
It's like those situations in war thunder where you shoot a weak vehicle multiple times but due to spaced armor, tracks and volumetric etc you don't kill it
Funny how Star Wars uses their own language, except when abbreviations are concerned. Then suddenly they have a complete understanding of English and the Roman alphabet.
Im honestly surprised the republic walker's cannon wasn't able to penetrate the atat's armor. Like yeah they are uparmored, but AT-TE cannons have damaged separatist crusiers in space, your telling me an imperal walker has more armor than a cruiser class starship 100x it's size?
You know, even though in the shows and movies, they show at-at’s being destroyed very easily, but it also makes me wonder why the rebellion never captured any of them.
People say star wars rebels wasn't a great show I disagree the newer ones aren't getting much positivity either at least the new cartoons are doing well
Okay, I understand the rule of universe. Even Emperor class titans whit horde of stormtroo.... skitarii will suck against Good Guys. And, of course, volley of large plasma destructor, the size and power of star destroyer's engine, will be easily reflected a little f****** light knife.
