I had IBS for most of my adult life, so I fully understand your video. I found out have weeks of listing my food intake that onions were my main problem. So when cooking I now use onion granules. ( it is the actual onion I could not eat) it does make it difficult when eating out. Back in 2011 I was told I had Bowel Cancer which had spread to my liver. I was given palliative treatment. As you are reading this 12 years I am cancer free. So please keep checking. Don’t expect to see blood in your poo. I never did.

Ive just started watching a parasite group on fb that says they cause illness including cancer. We used to self medicate with castor oil to rid us of parasites. Nowadays there is too much cancer around. Food for thought.

Fellow sufferer here. I will not go to a restaurant or stay at anyones home, don t like travelling incase an attack comes on, out of nowhere. My symptoms range from Chronic constipation to lets just say a violent case of explosive évacuation 💥 and its so random, a gurgling cramp then literally hv to run to the loo! I have however started taking a lot more fibre and drinking Kefir and probiotic yoghurts and Magnésium. This seems to be improving the situation but its difficult knowing what the trigger is. The condition started in my mid 40s so its been 10 years and I never talk about it. Its great to read the comments and know that we are not alone. Thanks Helen.

I have IBS and a undiagnosed urgency issue. This got so bad earlier this year I wouldn’t go out anymore. It would start with serve pain and I would have a very short time frame to get to the loo. And unfortunately I didn’t always make it. Mortifying. Thank you for talking about it

As a long-term IBS-D sufferer thank you for your video. My son emigrated to Canada recently with my 2 grandchildren and if I wanted to see them all I had to face the 9-hour flight and 7-hour car journey to visit them. I take Loperamide (on prescription) to enable me to live as "normal" a life as possible and during my trip to Canada I took over 60 of these tablets so I could "safely" go on day trips with the grandkids and go for occasional meals, along with a poo pourri spray for the plane journey from Amazon. Coped for the visit, had to get my system back to just 2 tablets per day which took a while 😐 and am fed up with having to live my life around where the toilets are! ! I'm careful what I eat, bland food is best. Really grateful to you Helen, you are such a great help to your Hel's Belles. 😍

That’s what I tend to eat, bland foods. I’m the same when I visit my son and Granddaughters. Strange how we have so many similarities but never talk about them.
@lindaroberts3142
@lindaroberts3142 Год назад
@@margopaton3240 Yes it certainly is, I've been in all the situations Helen spoke about and know I can't be the only one! IBS-D is the medical profession's blanket title for not really knowing what's wrong with us 🤨 I do socialise as much as I can, I'm 75 now and a coffee or lunch with family and friends is the norm for me (apart from the Canada trip!!!) but have to plan carefully with food the day before an outing and extra tablets on the day. That's how I cope with my symptoms.
@shirleywilliamson7444
@shirleywilliamson7444 Год назад
I went to see my GP a few weeks ago as my symptoms had become so bad, i couldn't go for a walk without needing my other half to collect me in the car, i literally couldn't move for fear of having an accident. I had tried all sorts and said I'm sure chemicals in food have a lot to do with it. He agreed and advised i do the low FODMAP for 6 weeks before adding food groups back into my diet to see what i can tolerate. 4 weeks in and so much better 😊. He also said write down any stresses and try to eliminate these. His final advice - make all meals from scratch, like our parents did

I am very pleased that you are having an improvement of symptoms, it's debilitating to be always fearful of attacks. I don't want to suggest anything injurious but I hv started drinking Kéfir and taking probiotic plain yoghurt and having oats for breakfast. It seems to be improving my symptoms if that is any help. I wish you continued health.

My consultant suggested managing it with Immodoum before i eat. I also keep off anything that might give me an attack for 24 hours before i leave the house. It does mean managing life in a way others never think about.

You’re very brave Helen talking about your struggles it is a hard subject to talk about. Yes we do get embarrassed but EVERYONE does it, I don’t have IBS or any other stomach troubles but used to get extremely embarrassed going for a poo if I was on like a caravan holiday with family members (close quarters and all that!) I used to line the toilet water so the splash wasn’t so obvious or run the tap or shower. Thanks again for your openness xx

Well done Helen, for your honesty and openness. Here's my story: As a regular meat eater, curiosity led me to go vegan for a 21 day experiment.. After 10 days on vegan diet, my horrific bowel issues of alternating constipation, diarrhoea and persistent haemorrhoids (even after surgery) vanished. I'm a nurse and was flabbergasted by the dramatic changes. Still a vegan 3 years later and wished I had changed 30 years ago and saved myself years of un-necessary suffering,💞
@archereaster611
@archereaster611 10 месяцев назад
Amazingly I had exactly the opposite happen to me. I was vegetarian and vegan for 30 years and suffered from IBS all the time, in the last few years having severe pain at night too. On searching for a cure I stopped eating wheat with immediate benefit, then stopped eating all grains. I then gradually eliminated all other plant material, having found out that fibre is unnecessary. Not only did stomach issues go away but also arthritis, rheumatism, headaches etc. I suspect it wasn't the meat you were eating but other food stuffs with iffy ingredients and going vegan has helped by eliminating them but as time goes on you will find that you are just not getting enough nourishment from your diet. I recommend Dr. Ken Berry for a starter for health advice.

Thank you so much Helen for talking about the Poo Taboo. My brother was hospitalised only last week for 5 days with a flare up of his ulcerative colitis which was diagnosed nearly 30 yrs ago when he was 32. Unfortunately my daughter was also diagnosed with the same 4 years ago when just 24. She manages so well and takes medication everyday but as you can imagine I was so upset especially with her being so young but so proud of her down to earth acceptance of this disease. The more people like you with a platform that brings taboo subjects out in the open, hopefully will mean a lot less embarrassment in the future. Many Thanks as always, like having a chat with a friend ❤

Thanks for talking about this subject Helen. I well remember the late Lynn Faulds Wood, wife of John Stapleton (both journalists and presenters) and she had bowel problems. She was determined to talk about it on TV so people suffering in silence would know she was a fellow sufferer and encourage people to be open and use the words that weren't generally used in 'polite' conversation. She was a trooper and battled her illness for many years. Lots of love and keep well. ❤

I remember her too. She definitely made an impact at the time, and was an early crusader for talking about bowel issues. Many years later and I am suffering myself and fairly open about how bad the issue has become for me. I think it is important to explain so that people know I am having a bad day, especially at work. Things have become so bad for me that I have spare clothes in my car.

@@Myover50fashionlife oh no - that’s not great, hoping you’re finding ways to cope with it. I’m really interested in the microbiome and trying to get things right with our ‘good bacteria’ - I’m currently trying intermittent fasting, also trying to eat less ultra processed foods! I’ll have to see if that works! I feel very fortunate to have been well looked after by the NHS as I also developed endometrial cancer, almost 3 years ago - early stages again - and needed a hysterectomy, hoping that’s my lot where cancer’s concerned! I did wonder when you talked about the surgery you’d had, I think last year, that had left you with a ‘balcony’ whether that had been a hysterectomy. But it makes sense now! Hope you’re on an even keel currently.

I’ve had all the tests - was even radioactive at one point 😳 but diagnosis was anxiety induced IBS so I’m on a very low dose of anti-depressants and loperamide - which I have to buy myself!! 🤬. The bladder and bowel assoc are good too - they send you a card you can show if you need a loo desperately. It must be nice to not have to worry about where the nearest loo is!! Ho hum. Thanks for sharing this issue which is common for so many of us Helen. The urgency at times is frightening and the feeling of panic has left me shaking and feeling sick at times! I quite agree about our public toilets in this country, and my handbag contents are largely based around easing my discomfort, and endeavouring to remove smells as much as possible! And oh, how I identify with the embarrassment of the various noises and the pain waiting for someone to use a hand dryer or pulling their flush! I have always hated toilet humour from a young child, and I now know that it’s far beyond an joke, but, that said, we should all be more open! Well done and thank you for being so brave Helen xx

Thank you, Helen, for this. I thought I'd share my 'must have' for getting rid of unpleasant bathroom odours ... matches. Just strike a match (or two at the same time) then gently blow out and waft around the loo. Smell gone! I think it's the sulphur that does the trick. And here's a bit of useless info. Remember the old outside shed-type loos? If a soldier (for instance) had left an odour, the next one in the queue would say "cor blimey mate, strike a light" which referred to the striking of a match for the reason I just mentioned. I keep a box in the medicine cabinet and in my handbag x

Hi Helen, I love watching your pod cast, especially M&S. I grew up it Edinburgh but now reside in Canada so I have to order my M&S from the Canadian site. I’m so sorry to hear about your stomach issues. For years I was told I had IBS but about 7 years ago it really ramped up so was referred to a GI specialist (gastroenterology specialist). Because I had my gallbladder removed about 35 years ago, the specialist was sure I had Bile acid malabsorption (BAM) which causes chronic diarrhea. I has a colonoscopy and a few other test to rule out Crones, Colitis, cancer etc. and was given the all clear. Conclusion: BAM and now take prescription Olestyr every day to stop the diarrhea or at least slow it down giving me enough time to find a toilet because that was a real problem too. The gallbladder regulates the amount of bile secreted into your stomach when you eat and when it’s removed the bile is uncontrolled, hence, diarrhea. Not everyone has this issue with gallbladder removal but both my sister and brother have this very same issue and no gallbladder. I hope this helps, and if you think your problem is BAM, push for a referral to a GI specialist. Good luck.

Long term sufferer here too. Stress is definitely a major factor with me. Interviews, exams, social occasions all bring on the stomach ache. I do avoid curries and spicy food now, although I love them but every now and then I take a chance and sometimes it’s ok. The worst thing though is since having my baby (now 44) I suffer from haemorrhoids whenever I have a serious bout. That is agony for at least a couple of days. I am going to try your poo sprays and dog deodoriser too. I bought a Sharp vac which has a light and was surprised how useful it is. Thank you as always for your no nonsense attitude.

Thank you Helen for what has proven to be one of the most valuable videos I’ve ever watched on RU-vid. I have suffered IBS for years and for a long time didn’t understand what was wrong with me and why I seemed to be different from everyone else I knew. I have recently been diagnosed with Diverticular Disease. I least I now have a name for what is the matter with me. I was diagnosed by the specialist who did my scheduled 5-year colonoscopy.

Thank you, Helen. I’m so glad someone is talking about it. I tell everyone I’ve got a degree in bowels! Your Mum is the only other person I’ve heard of with collagenous colitis, bless her, I know how awful that can feel. My gastroenterologist said he recommends golden linseed to help with bowel problems over other OTC medicines and it’s really helped. 😊

Bravo Helen. I started having random episodes in later life and have practically eradicated the problem by avoiding lactose. There are so many lactose free products available now which is a blessing. I sometimes joke that if I need to "clean my pipes" I just eat some normal cheese. Works every time. I always had Imodium in the house but it was so expensive for just 6 capsules. My pharmacist here in Cyprus told me to purchase Loperamide and I get 30 capsules for less than 5 euros. Thanks for addressing this subject in your video. x

Fantastic video Helen,thank you so much for doing this. I can relate to every single problem that you have spoken about, as I have Crohn's disease with IBS just to top it off! I felt a little less isolated watching this video and reading the comments knowing that I'm not alone has made all the difference. Pelican Healthcare do an amazing mint spray, especially for bowel "emissions". Btw, you are more than entitled to use loos for the disabled as they now have signs to say "not all disabilities are visible" Thank you Helen X 1000 🥰 for this wonderful video

Thank you for doing very informational video. I found it most helpful. Perhaps this will help others to be more understanding about individuals who suffer from IBS. My mother suffered with IBS and was always too embarrassed to explain why she couldn’t go places or do certain things. If she were alive today, I would make these toilet bombs for her keep them in my purse keep them in her purse, and in every bathroom in her house and my house. I love potpourri, but it is very expensive. This has been very helpful. Thank you so very much and I too thought Debra James was wonderful and brave. You are wonderful and brave. Thank you for highlighting this issue. I’m 57 and have had IBS since I was 19. My mum and sister have it too. It’s put me in so many embarrassing situations with the panic that comes on when you need the loo and you know you don’t have time on your side. Like you I will use a disabled loo as it is a hidden disability and there are now posters up on some loos saying please allow for ‘hidden disabilities’. Like you, work was always awkward in shared loos! Thanks again for this video x

Thanks so much Helen for bringing up this topic. I had a diseased gall bladder removed 9 mos. ago. I wasn’t having problems but an ultrasound for something else showed it might rupture & I needed surgery. Since then I’ve had many “stomach issues” I never had before. It starts with sharp pain & cramping & can come on with an urgent need to get to a toilet. There have been close calls while driving & sudden need to find a public restroom which isn’t easy to find on the road. There’s been lots of flatulence, embarrassing moments & the need to change appointments at the last minute. It’s an ongoing learning curve as to what foods are best tolerated. All the doctor said was avoid spicy and fatty foods! I had wanted to do Keto for weight loss but I’m thinking the fat content would be too high. Thank you from this 77 yr old for always being so open, informative and a lovely woman to hang out with on YT. 🤗

Hi I have suffered the same side affects after gall bladder removal, I had a scan and discovered excessive bile salts malabsorption which was causing excessive bowel movements and pain. The Consultant started me on a powder Colestyramine light 4mgs oral suspension everyday it has stopped the issues as long as I take it. It tastes like wall paper paste yuck but a little fruit juice and it's tolerable. For nearly 4years now I have my life back if you know what I mean no worries about finding a toilet. Good luck

Helen just to say well done on speaking out loud about this illness. My Auntie suffered from Crohns disease for years, and had a colostomy bag which she used to be so embarrased about as she was convinced we could always smell it which we couldn't.
