At least five people are dead after more than 70 vehicles were involved in a massive ice-related pileup Thursday morning on Interstate 35 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Aerial footage showed the extent of the damage after a series of icy collisions, including multiple semi-trucks, were caught in the wreckage. Video at the scene showed dozens of smashed cars and trucks, some literally piled on top of one another on a wet roadway.
Fort Worth Fire officials said there were numerous injuries due to the pileups and first responders were checking on people in each vehicle involved.

I don't know how quickly google maps updates but it's been a very useful tool as a trucker. Live traffic is so amazing and in bad weather like this can really help you in deciding that you need to slow down and be alert whether traffic has already cleared past the point currently shown but at least keeps you alert.

Right on fellow driver, luckily all I've been in was freezing drizzle in joplin, MO this week & last night coming down from Cleveland, OH kinda heavy snow with unsure'd drivers staying in the middle lane causing slow back ups. But as a driver I would commit to stop the truck when there is ice like that or slow it down when spray from Under neath tires are no longer visible. Stay safe brother

How can anyone be so negative when people lost their lives. From what I read I don’t think anyone thought it would be that bad. It’s Texas, not Michigan. Those big trucks could have been from another state and just didn’t know it could get like that. Where I live we rarely get weather like that and this exact thing would happen here. I don’t care where a truck is from. Checking weather is something a driver should do daily, specifically to avoid crap like this. I’ll agree no driver is going to be perfect, the weather forecast won’t always be correct and mistakes will happen, but it’s no accident when this many trucks are piled up like firewood. When truckers do their job accidents like this are nowhere near as bad. That’s all that is expected, help minimize the wrecks. Even if the wreck is someone else’s fault.

@@idk-ej3ly wheels lock. You have to pump the break in these conditions.
@ClaytonsVids
@ClaytonsVids 3 года назад
@@idk-ej3ly When you slam the brakes, the rear tires lose traction on ice and this causes the rear of the vehicle to come forward, causing the vehicle to go into a spin. Many vehicles are equipped with traction systems that try to prevent this from happening, but the computer can only do so much. If you have a FWD vehicle (most) and you find yourself suddenly on sheet-ice, the best first reaction is to grip the wheel firmly (hold straight, no turn), let off the gas completely (don't brake yet), and downshift if you have a transmission that will allow you to do that. This causes the front wheels to "engine brake". As long as the driver keeps the vehicle pointed straight, the vehicle will decelerate as quickly as possible given the ice condition without spinning. As you decelerate, look for any non-ice surface and try to navigate the vehicle towards that surface if it is safe to do so. For example, the gravel on the shoulder may help you come to a safe stop if your speed is reduced enough that entering the shoulder is not unsafe. In a pileup situation like this, however, there may be no good alternatives available. Really tragic.... :-\

My advice as a Truck driver with 9 years experience and 3 over the road with all kinds of weather is to drive within your braking and visibility distance, keep your eyes on the road. Text messages and phone calls can wait, and if forecast shows severe weather drive with extra time in schedule. Let the speeders have their lane.
