This Steam Engine comes in at At 210,190 lbs, the tender weighs 112,610 lbs, it can hold 7,000 gallons of water and 2,350 gallons of oil.
City of Coffeyville received the oil burning Steam Engine in 1955 from the Santa Fe railroad. You can see it display in Walter Johnson Park.
In 1902, and 1903, 103 of 1050 Class, Prairie type (2-6-2) just a quick note about that number, is in reference to the wheel arrangement on the locomotive. This locomotive was built for the AT&SF by Baldwin Locomotive Works they numbered from #1050 to #1152.
The drivers 69" were designed for general use in both freight and passenger service, it operated at 200 psi delivering 38,097 lbs tractive Effort that is the force at the rims or the outer edges of the driving wheels of moving trains.
It was built with a four cylinder Vauclain compound LOCOMOTIVE ENGINE, it had a 17" x 28" high pressure and 28" x 28" low pressure cylinders. The patent No. 406011, dated June 25, 1889, COMPOUND LOCOMOTIVE - ENGINE, SAMUEL M. VAUCLAIN is the inventor. We are looking at an engine from the Colorado railroad museum (Manitou & Pikes Peak Steam Locomotive No. 1 (S)) You can see two pistons mounted in line and moving in parallel to drive a common crosshead, one on each side of the locomotive. The valve was on the inside, controlled by Stephenson valve gear.
The claim for this engine set up is that it uses lower fuel and water consumption. Turns out it produced uneven forces and excess wear at the crosshead. Increased maintenance costs of the complex valve assembly and the starter valve, that in turn didn’t off set the fuel savings. The AT&SF ended up simplifying all its 1050 Class, between 1910 and 1922 with 23½" x 28" cylinders. Many US railroads were abandoning compounds and converting those they owned to single-expansion locomotives.
That’s what happened to this steam engine, it was rebuilt by the Santa Fe to a simple engine with 23½" x 28" cylinders at the Topeka, KS shops in August 1914.
