Three Automat scenes from THAT TOUCH OF MINK (1962), starring Doris Day and Cary Grant (with Gig Young and Audrey Meadows in supporting roles). Grant's a rich executive who's splashed mud on Day with his car. In the first scene, he sends Young down to the Automat to make things right. In the second and third scenes, Young, who has whisked Day up to Grant's office, raising Meadows' suspicions, returns to the scene of the "crime." dld.bz/aPgxJ

Now would be a perfect time for the automat to make another comeback. I read a few had tried to open in the 2000s but didn’t last long and shut down, I wish someone would open another one and try again, I’ve always wanted to eat at one. They’re so adorably retro.

@@Action_Figure_King Automats always used real china: coffee in cups with saucers & food on china plates. The food was also pretty tasty & portions were generous. Most customers ate full meals & the prices were low. Automats we’re definitely a couple of steps up from fast food restaurants today. When I was a kid, my family would go into the City to see a movie or visit a museum and then have a big dinner at an Automat. Everyone could get exactly what they wanted, & quickly! It was quite exciting to browse the windows to choose your dessert.

The automat has made a comeback in Jersey City in the last couple of years. Instead of food sitting around getting dried-out or overcooked, it's made to order; your name comes up on your screen, you go to the numbered delivery box, type "open" and voila! Your boxed lunch is ready... 😊

Ive watched this movie a few times in the past several months. It comes up on TCM in rotation. I like mid-century Doris Day movies. Particularly the romantic comedies. I too am obsessed with the retro charm of the automat. I was born in 1961 but don't remember an automat. They apparently were mostly a northeast thing. This movie gives a look at the front customer-facing experience and the backend kitchen operation. It was simply a delivery and presentation system. Cuts out the waiter/waitress layer. Not too much different than the modern buffet restaurants like we have here in Las Vegas. Except with the automat everything was pre-portioned, put on a plate, the behind in a window in a little cubical. And payment was per plate at point of access/delivery.

Life was so much simpler as a child. There used to be a Canadian department store chain named Zellers. It was the discount brand of the Hudson’s Bay Company. It was purchased by Target in 2012, who proceeded to fail spectacularly, closing in 2015. Anyhow, as a child in the 1970s and 80s, my mother used to take me to their Skillet Restaurant, anytime we went shopping. I have great memories of that place. We don't DO fast food, period, and haven't done so for a long time. Too little in terms of quality ingredients and prep., plus way too much fat and salt. I don't miss it, frankly. When I was a kid in the 60's there was one that we would hit when we went downtown to shop. Even as a kid I thought that they were kind of weird and I personally liked to get a good look at my food and see how it was prepared and handled at restaurants. I'd tease my mom and say that they spit on it or pick it up off the floor while hiding out of sight. That automat shut down and a smorgasbord opened up next door. That place was really good, you'd just grab what you want in plain view, pay for it at the register without the staff hiding out of sight and was faster without having to fumble for change and fiddle with gizmos. Interestingly innovative at the time and retro now but they became obsolete for a reason.

So true ! A truly talented actor....but alcoholism took over his life, leading him to kill his 5th & much younger wife in 1978 in his high rise luxurious Manhattan apartment. He then took his own life. And they'd only been married 3 weeks ! So sad & tragic.... 😞

I think I ate at an automat when I was very young -- no more than five or six. So it had to be about 1970. It was in Long Beach, I think. I remember being fascinated, thinking it was like the Jetsons: food from machines!

I want a parody of this scene showing them passing increasingly absurd items through this small window. Four cobs of corn, an entire turkey, an eight-foot party sub, a sheet cake, etc.

I didn't realize until now but the "At the Automat" Part 2 movie "Easy Living" and this movie "Touch of Mink" both involved the Automat and young women getting an unexpected mink coat from a millionaire. Was "Touch of Mink" supposed to be a remake of "Easy Living"? Because other than those two things, they don't have that much in common plot wise.
