This is my first work with film, and my first short documentary. It debuted at the Woods Hole Film Festival in 2010. "At the Heart Is The Guitar," explores the beautiful process of creating a hand made instrument. The film features the life and work of world renowned luthier and all around nice guy Steve Connor. Steve lives and works in Cape Cod, and builds classical guitars for clients such as Eliot Fisk, Zaira Meneses, Angel Romero, Dale Kavanagh & Thomas Kirchhoff of Amadeus duo, and the list goes on. This film gives viewers a chance to see a timeless and fascinating process that few ever witness.

Oh my goodness, why so many haters on here? Yes the guy may be a bit different from other Luthiers, doesn't mean he can't go fishing, hang out with his "lovely wife" and charge 35K for his guitars - that's up to him and good on him. Certainly does not make him an "asshole"! Oh boy, there are some horrible people around!

Very nice film documentary on guitar maker Stephen Connor. I met Stephen many years ago when he lived in Waltham, MA. Nice young man and very good guitar maker. I am so glad that he moved to Cape Cod and that he is experiencing much success there for his beautiful classical guitars.

In all fairness to Steve, he has branched out in experimentation with different designs that have potential to grab the interest of players, for their needs. I started out with a lot of different masters designs and didn't settle into my real preferences until 25 years down the road. The fact that Steve is trying different models, will put him in a place that will give better focus on which-ever designs he chooses to stay with in the future. So Steve has an excitement about his craft that will outlast many ups and downs with a guitar maker's life's pursuit. We all have to admit that this craft is a lovely pursuit.

Steve Connor has created an artistic, creative, fun, rewarding and financially successful life. Kudos! I just finished my first complete guitar build and, though, it is lovely to look at and wonderful to play, it is not nearly in the same league as a Connor. I wonder how many guitars he has built since 2009? What a treat to see and hear his story.

Wow. A lotta haters on this page. His guitar sounds great - they're always out of tune when first strung. If he can get $30k for a guitar, good luck to him - Braz Rosewd maybe? The guitar build looks detailed and well executed. The big question regards the absence of a heel where the neck joins the body. Seems a much simpler process with, possibly, more predictable results re neck angle. Got me thinking, for sure.

Do you design each bracing to vibrate at a specific frequency?
@NeverTalkToCops1
@NeverTalkToCops1 5 лет назад
He does nothing of the sort, and if he did, such frequency would changed in the completed instrument. He admitted he is guided more by intuition, than science, and the science he does mention are just fluff and puff buzz words, like fractals. Does he even know the fractal equation?
@andsalomoni
@andsalomoni 3 года назад
@@NeverTalkToCops1 The lattice bracing in the video is somewhat fractal, in fact there are some main struts that are bigger than the struts between them, and he could have made a third series of even smaller struts to put between the second ones. It's very easy to produce fractal structures, even if you don't know the equations. The point is whether using fractals gives good results in guitar making. Does a too dense lattice structure make a better sounding guitar? They say that it is better to put as little bracing as possible. The secret to make good guitars is to tap tune the top properly, whatever the bracing system, not to invent weird bracings because you can't make good guitars with the standard ones.
@sc12100

We applaud your experimentation! I don't think any of those bracing patterns fall out of fractal geometry. Perhaps you collected data on the performance of these bracing patterns, if not, all your work is lost, save for something you discovered by chance and remembered. It is likely you did not discover anything worthwhile, as the guitar building world is not recommending your methods.

An $8,000 guitar is not a student model. That's something a talented guitarist might save up for over a fairly long period of time before before being able to buy. I live in Sonoma County and I'm surrounded by Luthiers. Do their guitars cost a pretty penny? Yes. $8,000 is is in the middle to upper range for a luthier of note, and sometimes you'll see people asking $12,000 - $15,000 for really special guitars. I've never even heard of this guy. He seems like a real asshole, and his work is creative, yet average. Even if I could afford it, I wouldn't buy a guitar from him. To put it in his words, it's because, of "ethics." And just as a little note - This guy has the nerve to say that he invented the side port? WTF
@imaxdigital7052
@imaxdigital7052 7 лет назад
He seems pretentious. He also seems like he inherited money to begin with; I know a lot of the top luthiers in my area which is considered the guitar mecca of the world, and I've never heard his name, not once. It doesn't make sense. He's selling student models for $8,000? Who is he selling to? Probably friends of his parents who are probably filthy rich, thinking he can just start at the top if he slaps a certain price tag on his instruments. Look at the top music schools in the country... How much do you think those guitarists are spending on their guitars? The answer is between $800 - $2,500 and those are guys that technically aren't beginners but students. Now look at the professional industry. The only people paying this much for guitars are the top of the top when it comes to live classical performance, and again, I've never even heard his name. I smell a trust fund baby. Just calling it now.

I know many colleagues of mine that will do work of equal or better quality for far less. 8000-35000 is as overpriced as it gets. Sorry, thats the truth. And its not even like he is doing any special kind of decorations that would justify the price. The models that are shown here are built very simply - this does not matter in the end result but you can see he even does all the connections sloppily to save time. thats fine but it won't justify the price.

the ridicoulous sound port, all it does is change the body resonance of the guitar - usually for the worse, but this lousy builder cant hear that, he is only listening from above the guitar and hears a certain volume only. overall his guitars are rubbish sounding, and not better in any way by being hand made. there are many factory made guitars that sound better then this.
