This was Tom's fault. He raised Ben. Since he laughed at Megan's humiliation at the wedding, he was giving his permission to carry on rather than teach him empathy.
Agree, Ben was convinced that anything he did was to be tolerated and approved by his father, so, even at 18yo, why can be expected to change or even to reflect on his acts.
I completely agree that it's Tom's fault for enabling Ben. However, instead of yelling or revenge, I would have taken my daughter home, packed our bags, and filed for divorce. Tom and his family are hideous people.

We had a cook like that. He was pranking us all the time. One day i was fat up and pranked him. He went ballistic and refused to talk to me for 3 months.

One side had a father and spouse die in a tragic car accident, and a child with cancer who went thru chemo therapy for years and lost her hair. The other side had a divorced father who allowed an 18-year-old doing pranks and pulled the wig from a child in a wedding while the stepfather laughed. She did not ruin the wedding, Ben ruined it. The only thing OP did wrong was not beating Tom to the divorce papers.
Story 1: Oh my god, OP was so desperate wanting a family to the point she didn't realize tom, ben and his families were abusive toward her and megan. It was only after the divorced that made OP felt the relief of getting away from that toxic marriage. I think OP need some therapy of why did she stayed in that toxic marriage for so long.

Ben and Tom went through a lot? What about Megan's recent cancer battle? She was selfconscious enough as it was, and for her step brother to embarass her in front of extended family and strangers (the cousin's inlaws and friends, who are strangers to Megan)... Gum in someone's hair can be removed with peanut butter. (This happened to me on the bus in high school. Mom used peanut butter to get the gum out, then I had to wash my hair.) That doesn't compare to hair loss because of a health issue.
How many of you think that the mother should have told everyone who was laughing, that they were being cruel for laughing at her daughter who had cancer and asked them how they would feel being a teenager who just went through chemo and that's why she was wearing a wig.

Ben needs to learn actions have consequences and not be allowed to get away with things and enabled by his family. You don't play humiliating pranks on someone recovering from cancer. Me too. And that's the best case scenario. Worst case scenario is that he ends up killed because he terrorized the wrong person. Either way, when Ben does fall down the rabbit hole, that whole family and Tom in particular are going to be shamed for letting Ben behave the way he does.

Ben committed the pranks and Tom didn't stop him, but in fact he allowed the pranks to continue. As the parent that makes Tom responsible for Ben's continued bad behavior. Megan was already going through so much and for Tom to dismiss Ben's behavior as "pranks" is ridiculous. The wedding incident showed just how much he didn't care for Megan. Megan's mother had had enough and lashed out by pulling a prank of her own on Ben. Ben however couldn't take the prank. He can dish it out but can't take it. Tom is totally in the wrong here.

It’s only a joke if everybody(!) laughs. I wonder if those, who pull pranks, are unconsciously very angry and may not be not safe to express. So the angry person takes it out on everyone other than the person he/she is angry at. Alot of pranks are done to make others feel bad.

When Ben first started the 'pranks' and Tom did nothing I knew that marriage was doomed. All OP did was the same thing Ben did, albeit she's an adult, she was showing Ben how it felt to be made a fool out of. If you can't take it, then don't dole it out. I've listened to hundreds of these audio stories, but this is the first time I've felt compelled to respond because I'm so angry. It's 100% Ben's fault, and Ben's father is doing him no favors. He'll figure that out when he's bailing his kid out of jail. I'm a cancer survivor who also had to wear a wig, but as an adult. I can't even imagine having to deal with the stigma of the effects of chemotherapy as a teen when body imagine is so important to them. The fact that the adults on Tom's side of the family condoned his behavior in any way blows my mind! He's lucky it wasn't my daughter because I'd have been arrested for the lesson I would have taught him, and I would have been the one to serve the divorce papers. I'm old now, so I grew up when you were actually encouraged to discipline children who didn't know how to behave. I worry for our younger generation now. They don't know the real meaning of respect for others, nor do they care. Very sad. I wish Mom and daughter all the best and hope they find their happiness away from selfish, entitled, bullies like that entire family.

I feel for Alexa. I did shave my head for my second brain surgery (done five) two days after I turned 14. And I did not like going without a cap on my head and not showing of the bald head. But of course some people at school did finf joy in stealing it. So I can guess it is even more traumatic for her as a girl's hair is very important for her.

One could say that Ben lacked social awareness in order to commit these "pranks" (aka assaults) until we got to the part of how he thought it was hilarious for an 18 year old adult (not a child!) to make small children cry. What Ben & Tom saw as harmless pranks & 'bonding' is actually bullying, plain and simple. The lesson to Ben showed the favouratism and hypocisy of Tom, Ben and their whole family who think it's ok to bully a cancer survivor over her looks but not ok when it's done to them. Tom continually overlooked Ben's maliciousness and abuse of others as harmless. Ben is 18 and still doing this? He's going to be a rough time with the law in the years to come because of Tom's lack of parenting.
My daughter just got out the hospital right before the summer break. No cancer but it was pretty awful ailment. She wanted to go to school and i was just so scared someone would do something like this. i just knew my reaction would be lethal. Thankfully i didn’t have to cause this so much for a kid to deal with.,
Oh OP, OP. I 100% agreed you were NTA. Your daughter went through hell with cancer treatments, and as a young woman, losing her hair had to be absolutely horrible to her. Ben humiliated you daughter, she was mortified, and you did the right thing taking her home. Worse yet your husband and MIL sat there and laughed. If Alexa wanted to blame anyone for taking the spotlight being taken away, then she should have blamed her nephew, as he was the one that did the cruel action. I get it, you were pissed and devastated by what Ben did to your daughter. However, you became the AH when you made such a childish decision to put gum in Ben's hair. You are a freaking adult, yet you chose to lower yourself to childish antics to get back at Ben. Ben is young, and has the "stupidity of youth," on his side having done what he did. Tom and Ben are both in the wrong. Op may have partly acted out of anger but more out of love for her daughter. What Op did may have caused him to shave his head and be humiliated, but now he knows how Megan feels because of his humiliating "pranks."
I hope that there is an update a few years down the road when Tom is all alone, Ben is a deadbeat leaching of his father, living in the basement and Alexa is divorced due to being as toxic as the rest of her family. And OP is dating a wonderful man and Meghan is excelling in College and her hair grew back more beautiful than before!

I wonder if it would have been a good idea to ask Tom’s ex wife why the were divorced. Some husbands are horrible and fight/win custody under less than upright situations. Having a dear family member who passed from cancer and all that our family went through, had someone cruelly pranked our loved one... I would've nailed that person to the wall. You DON'T do that. If Ben would learn to laugh at himself...he'd never run out of things to laugh about.

I lost my father to cancer when I was 18 & he was 49. My mom survived cancer and lived for another 32 years. In my opinion Ben got off light with the chewing gum in the hair prank. I would’ve rocked that kid’s world (and that of his entire paternal side of the family). I’d start with visiting my friendly neighborhood divorce lawyer because if daddy Tom, baby Ben and family felt no remorse for bullying a cancer survivor then they don’t need to be in my life. Next thing my daughter & I would make a different follow up video. I’d explain how my daughter lost her hair to chemotherapy and, instead of being supportive, her toxic LEGAL ADULT step-brother found antics like public shaming his bald stepsister funny. I’d forward his email address to my cancer survivor support group, their families, his school, and others who would find his bullying offensive. At this point I’d have filed for divorce since I no longer would tolerate living with Tom’s refusal to parent his idiot son. Then I’d sit back and watch my Community of fellow Cancer Warriors teach Tom and Ben about what happens when you find publicly shaming a cancer survivor funny. I’d also remind them that Karma’s a Witch and neither one of them are immune to the disease. Finally I’d remind them what happens when you provoke Mama Bear. You see, if Will Smith taught us anything it’s that there are ways to hit people without physically touching them. My uncle died because of cancer. I had watched him suffer from that. If my step-son would pull such a "prank" i would beat the shit out of him. And Tom would be lucky to.jave his teeth still intact after that laugh.

it is sad that those who do the most "harmless pranks" seem not to differentiate between harmless and harmful, and even illegal! Then they are shocked to get called on them. HARMLESS means nobody has to spend time or money or mental anguish on their doings!
Holy crap! They’re blaming OP and daughter ! Divorce him. These are NOT small pranks. This is massive bullying that is being tolerated by husband and his family.
This is 100% Tom's fault. She had been trying to get him to stop picking on her daughter and Tom would never make his son do what he needed to do. She was at the end of her rope! He Tom says that his son has been through so much to but he didn't have cancer, he didn't lose all of his hair, he didn't his parent did not die. That girl has been through so much, what Ben has been through pales in comparison. If Tom was a better father, he would have told his son to stop picking on her if he had any compassion at all for that little girl. He didn't, Tom has absolutely no compassion for anybody. I'm glad that she's rid of him.
Story 1 you should've encouraged Megan to retaliate pranks on Ben by having her replace his shampoo with Nair Or put fart spray in it before the school event so he smells like shit
