I'm a massive fan of the ata, they have made a very shootable gun that is proving to be well made and reliable. No it is not on beretta's level- and its not trying to be. For the money not much new comes close to what you get, beretta and the likes will never make a gun for that end of the market, because it's too hard to design, build, supply a gun that looks good, handles, and is built to a high standard for the price.being made in turkey with access to cheap labour, good materials inhouse wood/steel etc means you get more than you pay for with the ata. Great gun, will not last 30plus years of heavy use like brownings, berettas, winchester 101s etc but for that money if you get 10 years thats still a good deal
I've just bought an ATA as my first gun and it's brilliant. I did tonnes of research, yes they're not the same as a Beretta but it's £600 new and for someone new to it I think it's ideal. Actually hit more with it than on my lessons using their Browning, it's ultimately about what feels right and what you want or need to spend.
Should of mentioned this before but i will now. The quality and depth of your videos are second to no one on you tube and your knowledge of firearms for a man of your age is quite Remarkable and something i could only wish for and all delivered with a BBC quality voice. Well done posh bloke excellent.
Great review and thank you for taking the time to do these. I have just had my second lesson and have now been given a date for the FA visit to hopefully get signed of. In the meantime I am trying to research my first gun keeping in mind I am really on a tight budget. I fully understand the buy cheap buy twice theory, but I am drawn to the ATA simply because it does get reasonable reviews, taking them from some of the more well known shooting magazines, but secondly it comes with a 3 year warranty and should I ever need it, its there to be used. Of course its no Berreta and people would be silly to think as much, however as a first gun for clay shooting, and maybe shooting 1 day a month, then I think it should be ok. I'm no competition shooter or someone who takes it really seriously, but rather someone who turns up on the odd Sunday morning, pops a few clays and has a cup of tea lol. As I say, thank you for the review and be assured it offers total novices like me some insight into different guns.
Excellent review (as always)! I would have said that this review was the one I was waiting for having commented asking a few months back... in the end though, I couldn't wait and got myself a second hand grade 1 Browning 525 sporter for £400 more.
Very detailed review/comparison guys. I recently picked up an ATA laminate. Only had a few rounds through it but feels decent enough - I must say it does seen rather long in comparison to some others I have shot. Fingers crossed they hold up for a few years. Have you tried the semi auto ATA offerings?
Just bought a ATA semi auto .20 gauge .Fine quality shotgun for the price I must say...Even came with stock shims and two gas pistons.Be interested to see how the supplied chokes pattern
My first O/U was an ATA (then called a 686 in Oz) It was very stiff out of the box which revealed the lack of finish to the adjoining surfaces between the action and the barrel. After about 18 months one of the screws holding the metal to the wood in the fore end sheared off but was easily fixed when appropriate HSS screws were found. I have traded up to an Italian gun which just fits me better. Was that the basic model SP?
I'm enjoying your reviews. Have you ever done a Fausti review? I ask because I was offered one recently, which offer still stands and I'm considering it.
I'm definitely considering an ATA as a first gun, but I do reckon that given around a year or so of shooting i'd be buying a Beretta. We'll see though. I'm very new to the sport.
Nice comparison sir thank you for good information coming. Keeping in view durability and quality of both the guns which one would you recommended for folk?
Every time I had the thought “ooh I like that wood” it was the Beretta but I’m willing to bet, shooting the two, I couldn’t tell the difference. Of course, I still hunt with an Ithaca 37.
Thanks for the usual great review John, as a newbie to shotguns, I've just bought the 30" ATA SP Sporter in black with the adjustable stock, £679. So far I've only put 50 cartridges through it, but very impressed, the only thing I'm not too sure of are the phosphor matt black barrels, I reckon they'll grow on me.
Is it safe to store my Beretta Silver Pigeon in the original blue case it came with (normal, non - humid climate), or should the case it came with just be used for transportation?
What kind of barrel steel v. Beretta? Monoblock? I see the superior proof. Translates to what max. service pressure? Is that a defect in the barrel steel at the breech? Not sure.
Bought ATA SP the other week, only had about 250 through it so far but loving it. My only concern is it being front heavy a little, added some weight in the stock and switched to internal chokes and now it feels incredible. I should be doing around 3-4,000 clays a year so we will see how it hold up
@@kasuga9359 Barrel blew up on me in a freak accident, don't think I can put the blame on the gun though as they are all proofed the same. The main ATA supplier in the UK fixed it for free was that odd. Now bought a Beretta A400 for both clays and pigeons and never looked back. Still have the ATA for my friend when we go out together.
Hi, i am sorry for you, thank you for your quick response. I live in France, i am looking for 12 gauge, i sonetimes hunt and country side clay.. what should i buy, new or second hand. I wpuld like to have a all rounder, reliable and a good quality price ratio. Some say to buy the Franchi Feeling (990€) what do you think ? I like the sporting shotgun which look more resistant. I don't want to pay less now and more after bc of repairs. Thanks for you feedback.
@@kasuga9359 if your going hunting also then you ideally want soemthing with more than 2 shots so soemthing like the A400 I bought would be perfect. I picked mine up (newer grey version) for £1,050 with a case and full set of beretta chokes almost brand new. I tried as many peoples guns down my local site before deciding on the A400. For the price I don't think there is a better all round gun. Buy the sporting version though. Only downside to the gun is you can't really put small loads through it as it's gas operated rather than spring
@@kasuga9359 Not sure on the laws in France or how/where you can aquire guns but we use soemthing called GunTrader which is amazing. Just search it on Google. Not sure if it also operates in France or if you can do a firearm transfer across sea. I couldn't see why not. Its where you will find amazing deals.
Hello. Are both 28'' and 30'' barrels of Ata SP safe for steel shot? I suppose no chokes tighter than 0,5 (modified) must be used for steel...but in such case should I buy special steel chokes or is it Ok use its chokes? Thank you.
Thanks for the review Johnny in these locked down times. Always interesting, so please keep it up. I started shooting a couple of years ago. First gun was a silver pigeon based on advice in the gun shop. No regrets gun clearly. However wish I’d started with something a bit cheaper and maybe more funky. Have moved on from the 686 so perhaps that wasn’t the best decision, but passed it on to my teenage son. I like the look of the ATAs and some of the sub 1k guns as a sensible alternative starter guns.
so funny.....".is this action worth a thousand pounds ?......Yes, yes, it is. " (looking at the camera) I burst out loud laughing came out so fast I couldn't stop it. rewound and rewatched again , with the same response. Hilarious. Thanks for a good review, as all yours are.
I’m 15 and I’m looking at getting a shotgun and license later on this year, however I’ve heard that I would have to be 18 to buy the gun. How would I go about buying the gun.
ATA SP BLACK ADJ COMB, is just not a starter gun, its something you end up keeping. ATA - starter Gun - Check ATA - To keep gun from Starter - check ATA - price promise - Check ATA - Good for new and old shooters - check ATA - shooters from expensive gun owners bought and stuck with it - check ATA - attracting new shooters to the sport - check ATA - Many shooting ground and RDF are recommending - check.
The Gun Shop yup...if you can shed light on both over-under and semi auto that will be better.....just wanted to know better Turkish brand out there....
Ata arms make barrels for Beretta shotguns .so they know what they are doing your getting a lot of gun for your money . The wife has had her Ata Arms for 3 years now.
I pay for Italian and I get Turkish; No, my friend.part of Beretta it is the Stoeger in Turkey and make the cheap series self-contained, and airguns. All the 686-687 make in Italy.
So I have oid 682 gold beretta and a 690 3 lovely gun But I shot lot and I dont have children yet but i lovey doing clays on my daes of and the best but is seed time with my friends 5 of my good friends have ATA 3 of then have families and that the best in thare budget and very 1 is very happy and shot well with and enjoy them so that’s really 4 of then I an more than sure had trigger problems at some point Think it was second battle Proms but all of them sent away and fixed with good service and good time so ATA are good 👍. I have had 3 autos and 1 xsp to Benelli super b 2 and montefel and a Browning max and just now a ATA and it dis the job for 500 But as well I find the Franch fir the hard to beat but that just me Good video thanks
Hi, i'm looking for an O/U for my first shotgun for about 700 quid, do you think I should go for a brand new ATA or a used 686 (which, granted is gunna be a bit more pricy, but it's still close enough).
The Gun Shop I was looking on your website and I see a silver pigeon and a silver pigeon 1 for sale. What's the difference between the two? I've read the silver pigeon is better designed than the SP 1. Any truth in that from your professional opinion? I'm looking for a sporting variant preferably.
stephen mac both the silpig and silpig1 are internally the same. The engraving pattern changed slightly, meaning the engraving on the 1 is shallower, but they are mechanically the same. The barrels and chokes on the 1 are also an ‘upgrade’ on the previous models.
High quality goods wear in: low quality goods wear out. With obtaining a shotgun certificate being so difficult why would you waste it on a “cheap” gun? You could buy the Silver Pigeon new, keep it for a few years and lose £600 come resale. Buy the ATA and you would lose £600 instantly as, according to my local gunsmith, you can’t give them away second hand. I had this choice and went for a second hand Browning 325, with a spare set of non choke barrels instead. A quality gun that has never missed a beat.
Horses for courses. My feeling is if you are not taking the sport too seriously and will shoot say 1000 cartidges a year guns like the ata make a lot of sense, plus the first gun factor if you have no experience learn on a cheapy and move up, i myself bought 1980 winchester 101 as my first because it was basically new in box, i now have 2 winchesters and an ata, it is my backup gun but tbh it is a great little gun. Feels very good in hand. No it is not anywhere near as nice as a b gun internally the materials and overall final tooling etc isn't there. But it shoots well and after couple 1000 rounds i am a big supporter.
Looking at a ATA for the game days. Cheap and if it gets marked or damaged im not going to cry 😅. I like it comes in a 30 inch barrel. Cana shoot for shit we shorties 🤭
Just re watching this as I over heard someone talking pish about interchangeable parts at the weekend. One thing I didn't notice last time was how horrific your socket set looks!
Beretta is just amazing but I prefer Fabarm. I'm not a big fan of using shokes in a good over and under shottgun and my Fabarm is just amazing without them. I can broke a lot of clays and hunt very nice. Is my little baby.
So, the ATA is a knock-off Beretta. A bit cheeky perhaps. But anyone wanting to buy a new gun for £600 hasn't got a Beretta on their shortlist. Funnily enough, when you are young and poor, if you buy an ATA and get on with it, then once there's a little more disposable income, you are possibly more likely to get that longed for Beretta. So Beretta might even profit from the ATA long term.
Buy italien EOS sporting gun from Fratelli Redolfi S.n.c much better gun than ATA for same money and have same good quality as 686 beretta. 🤔 If you want the best Gun in the market for the money buy blaser f16 sporting pro Gun for 3000 Euros. Why buy New 686 sp sporting for 2800 Euros? When you can buy f16 blaser sporting for 200Euros more and it is pro Gun to. Good job blaser and Eos 👍
But a EOS sporting is £400 more than an ATA. And I would rather a pigeon Sport than a F16 for longevity - and the fact that a SP1 is £1650 and an f16 is £2500!
I would RATHER NOT use such ghastly wood like that for a gun. I’ve seen better looking wood at the bottom of Terror Bay. 500 pounds is still 500 pounds!
I've never understood the concept of balance and ascetics when all is said and done regardless of all the bells and whistles. Most shooters are not athletes but unfit bald guys with a fat wallet and a belly to match....
