After reading more of the comments, keep in mind this is a entry level gun and is a work horse . It's tried and true and for two grand you can't find a better gun for the money. My silver pigeon has over 200,000 rounds under its belt and was just serviced by beretta for $150.00. New locking lugs, firing pins, and springs. What more could you ask for from a gun at 2 grand.

Was waiting for someone to say it - you do not buy one because it’s beautiful. You buy it because it shoots well enough and is hard as nails. Cheap to run, holds good value and reliable as any. Not a fan of some of the aesthetic changes but we will all have forgotten them soon enough.

Well said Frank, my SP1 sporting is 3 years old now with around 30 - 35k rounds. I shoot clays at least once a week most of the time 2x week. My gun has worked hard for me and I've yet to do anything to the gun other than replace a ejector spring I lost while cleaning it. Went from never shooting clays, to A- class skeet shooter, and working twords master class in sporting all with my Siver Pigeon. Many of my fellow shooters keep asking why I haven't upgraded my gun yet. I can't bring myself to retiring it, just works for me. I keep looking at a DT-11 L but I just keep dragging my SP to the clay field week after week.

The Gun Shop hi I have the Silver Pigeon 1 Sporting 12 Gauge in 30” Barrel (Old Version) and I always wanted to buy the 20 Gauge in Silver Pigeon so today I placed an order and paid 30% deposit on Silver Pigeon 1 (New aversión) Field 20 Gauge 30” barrel and I feel very disappointed to be honest. I feel like calling the dealer tomorrow to stop the order and ask to change the order to the old version but I’m so confused and I’m lost and not sure what to do Please advise me what to do I don’t wanna end up with a lesser quality gun But the new version has the Optima Choke HP and not on the older Field model Your advice is much appreciated

I bought a SP1 yesterday, I drove over 200 miles to the only shop with one in stock, didn't want to buy without seeing it, Its a vast improvement over the Remington 1100 Trap I've been shooting since '97, personally I'd like an all black receiver., but the engraving is fine for me. Cant wait for Sunday to bust it out

The sporter with the adjustable comb shoots brilliantly, might be down to fit and I agree about the engraving but it certainly gets the job done especially for the price

Excellent presentation. I bought my Silver Pigeon 1 about three years ago and it looks a lot better than the one you demonstrated. The finish on mine looks better than the new model. I don't know what Beretta was thinking about when they came out with the 2019 model. If something works well, leave it alone.

I'm definitely with you on the forend. I do not like schnabels on them, and I prefer longer barrels of 30-32 inches which will tilt the balance even further forward..... Still, it is a pretty sharp looking gun even with the fairly plain wood, and it will take a lot of shooting and last a long time doing it before a rebuild is necessary.

Not long just got one a 30'' field, comparing a 2016 and the update 2019 I much prefer the update with its satin finish and laser engraving the more I look at it the more I like it, luckily I found a nice darker stocked one for £1500, dark wood satin action Steelium optima HP barrels and i'm very happy with it.

Looking back to buying my first o/u; I went to my local ground/shop all geared up to buy a new SP 1 but came away with a second hand 525 hunter prestige for only slightly more money. Those in the know might say they're an equally boring choice really but one is at least infinitely more interesting to look at than the other. I'd be inclined to give the second hand shelf a look every time before looking at something like this. It certainly worked out for me.

After 1 month using my SP1. I m veeery happy with the gun. Only cons i found : a little bit front heavy but it can be fix easily and the stock grip is a little bit short for me. Can be fixed also but you need to add a piece o wood on the stock

I do like the box for all of the spare parts and goodies!! It does look cheap though. I’ll stick with my Browning 725 which I’ve grown to like. Waiting on the Fabarm Elos N2 or Elos Allsport, Which will most likely be my next purchase for my son, not a new Beretta SP. Great honest review as always. 👍🏼👍🏼

Well Jon, here’s my take on the silver pigeon, I own an sp sporter which I bought new earlier this year which I absolutely love, I also bought a silver pigeon 687 v which is a 97 model(97 on the barrels) and the engraving on the older gun is much nicer and a lot more of it, I’m thinking more time and effort was put into the older guns as my pal also has an older 687s which has beautiful engraving too,I m thinking that they are making the new ones (although they are still lovely’s) and Less unique.

How high would you rate updating the barrels to Steelium optima HP in a field specific gun(in my case)? Are they so superior to the old ones with 50mm multichokes also considering the lengthening of forcing cones from X? to 80mm (do you know the exact lenght)? I have understood that it´s a bit harder to find good shels the to old ones for good patterns. I´m thinking of getting some 75mm Briley chokes to narrow this gap to OCHP. Thank´s for the great videos!

Just found a pair of 2018 models on clearance at the local shop. I was able to get one of them but wish I could afford both after seeing this, if for nothing else than the looks. I believe the old forend has a lot more personality and a cheap accessory box will not make me buy a new version.

Could you please explain the common traits of a field gun to me? With a sporter i understand the developments. Chunky pistol grips with parm swells. Adjustable combs for a more open shooting style. Wide tapered ribs for a better sight plane. To mention a few. With a field I don't understand everything. More open grips like a "Prince of Wales"- I assume this is more for aesthetics? Narrow unventilated ribs? Is this just appearance again? I understand the solid heal plate is for ease of mount as well as aesthetics. Fixed chokes over multi? The rounded "American forend" over a schnable or beaver tail? I own and love my field gun. I just wondered if there were benefits to the styling or is it purely aesthetics? Much appreciated.

No wonder my local gun store was trying to shift it's silver pigeons in stock. I was after a field gun and ended leaving with a Lincoln vogue on deal. I am pleased I did, It was £800 cheaper and it does not shoot that bad at all. My clay gun is a 692 which I bought new 3 years ago. The new pricing structure is ridiculous, £1600 for a basic/poor wood gun mass produced gun. The older guns are much nicer 687 sp3

An entry level gun with that "Beretta" name on it that simply oozes reliability and is at home in a pigeon hide, a walked up day or a posh driven shoot. No wonder it's at the top of the sales charts. I bought mine new in 2007 (it's a 2006 manufactured gun) and is an "S" model. It's shot game and clays every year since then and even deputised on a goose shooting trip when the semi-auto needed work. It really does it all with aplomb. I really didn't realise until I checked how old it actually is. It's never let me down, it still looks smart, a bit of work on the wood where it was wearing away slightly is all it's needed in it's life. Now I really didn't know it was that old. Maybe it's about time I should be treating myself. But if I do, the Pigeon will stay!

I just bought a 2019 686 sporting 30”. It’s my first over under. I went to a local sporting clays grounds and rented a browning and beretta and the beretta both fit better and seemed to be of better quality in construction and attention to detail. I personally don’t understand the notion that “no one buys a beretta 686 because they’re beautiful.” Meanwhile their top of the range models seem to offer nothing more than plain actions and nicer wood for 3-4x the price. I realize there’s more to one of those guns than that, but ultimately the 686 is a beautiful gun in my opinion. More beautiful even than the majority of the higher end guns not counting the custom stuff of course.

I concur, it’s a very beautiful gun and I love the more simplistic look of the wood grain on a 686 SP1. I can’t imagine using anything else in the field these days, in hot Arizona deserts while dove hunting. …except maybe my 687 SP3 12ga, or maybe my 687 EELL 12 ga. All joking aside, the SP1’s wood grade is dynamite “as-is” in my opinion.

Buy a Rizzini BR 110 field or sporting gun for the same money. There is a reason Field and Stream named it 2018 over under gun of the year.

Not a Barreta fan since my 686 field, they have a long way to go with low end Shotguns to compete with Miroku/Browning. Looks like a cheaper gun with cheaper workmanship! The Miroku Mk 60 Field you had on earlier is much better gun for my money !

It looks like laser engraving and that might explain the more matte finish since its easier to laser engrave a surface that doesnt reflect light.

Almost all shotguns with engraving are laser engraved ...
@engineer6250
@engineer6250 5 лет назад
If I’m not mistaken, most of the low to midrange shotguns actually have rolled or etched designs, both of which are faster to implement than laser engraving.

I went to buy a new Beretta 28 gauge last week !! Imagine my disappointment to find out that it was not steel proofed !!! Nobody in their right mind would buy a new gun if it's not steel proofed in today's climate !! I tried a Browning and guess what, yep not steel proofed !! What is going on with the 28 bore ?????????

Strange isn’t it. Not many production 28 bore HP steel shells out there yet. I know of one gunmaker who steel proves 28’s but they aren’t at production prices

As of today (Feb 2024), all 686 and 687 models in all calibers are steel proofed.

I had (still have) a defective silver pigeon 20 ga ..fails to fire the second barrel about 1/3 of the time... the company representative would not even discuss further repair or replacement after an alleged repair effort that was not successful ...and doubt it was even halfway attempted.......never would have imagined the rudeness of the Beretta representative....I'll never buy another...never. I've dealt in firearms for some 40 plus years here in middle Tennessee and northern Alabama with many different firearm makers who were more than willing to do what was necessary ...to make that rare repair or replacement....but not Beretta..not them...acted as if they were too good to help........I still get angry thinking about the way I was treated...the gun is practically unsaleable and in fact, is too dangerous to use .....buyer beware of this company if you ever encounter an issue.

Beretta not repairing a defective or “dangerous” gun as you called it? Beretta is so worried about liability, that your story sounds a bit preposterous. I’ve had nothing but excellent service from Beretta in the past. When I had an issue with a locking block on one of their handgun models, Beretta paid for shipping in both directions and fixed the gun for FREE, when it had been out of warranty for 4 years.

Never been that fussed on engraving myself. The wood to metal finish on this example is quite shoddy on the stock to action on the left hand side. If I were in a gunshop I would ask for another and another till it looked right. This example looks like a Friday afternoon gun just before clock-off and QC have gone early. Shame as I was thinking of picking one up. Looking at the wood the ATA's are looking better for a 1/3 of the price. I say that as I am looking for a second gun for my son when we go clay shooting. But Ah Well there are probably better looking examples out there...
