Atari 520STfm - Fixing two things to make an epic retro gaming rig. Then I do something terrible...

I have the 520STFM bought back in 1989 with TOS 1.02 and currently in need of repair. I recently stumbled across another in the trash but with newer TOS 1.04 and overall newer than mine. I have since added the ST2VGA and Gotek to make it useful. Fortunately, my Dell P2214H monitor was able to display the ST low resolution properly without any mods. With medium resolution, the display will have some weird lines. As for software, I downloaded the TOSEC 2017 ST disk images and copied to the Gotek. As with the name, there is nothing much anyone can do with just half meg RAM. Many demos and games won't run on it. RAM upgrades not that easy to install either.

One cable at the cost of around 15 dollars, and the Amiga had Midi as well. Midi is just a communication protocol, just like any other data transfering, and does not make any sound on its own. Yes, people used the AtariST instead, because you know, it was cheaper. So the trick up it's sleave are not MIDI, it is the total cost that were the trick. Having that extra cable on the Amiga, is a bit the same as having two extension cables out from the bottom of the ST. The Amiga had a better GUI and sound chip, but the ST had the OS in ROM chips. The ST a a breader selection of audio software, not because of the MIDI port, but because of a breader user base of Music makers after a couple of years. All in all. The Amiga was a better machine, before the STE was released. The lack of blitter was the Amiga's main advantage, and that was the reason why a breader user base were using Amiga for gaming. If we take away music making and gaming from the equation, then both were on par and equally useable. Except for one final area. That area were using the machine as a terminal and monitor for high speed data processing. The Amiga's bus were so much better than the ST, that places like Nasa and high speed colliders, like the one in Texas or in California, used Amiga for it. ST and x86 IBM Personal Computers were too slow for that task, and the only one that came close were Apple Macintosh. But Apple refused to provide the needed hardware documentation, and Commodore threw every possible documentation at those who requested that for extreme computing application and integration to machines such as Cray supercomputers.
