Atari and the Business of Video Games: Crash Course Games #4

Today, Andre is going to talk about the rise of Atari and with it the rise of the video game industry. So if you remember from last episode, we mentioned that the first arcade machine, Galaxy Game, happened to have a coin slot, but this was just the beginning. Nolan Bushnell, often considered the Father of the Video Game Industry, saw the opportunity for the commercialization of video games. Bushnell founded Atari and oversaw the development of its first game - Pong. And then, through some questionably ethical business strategies, Bushnell was able to get his machines into arcades all across the United States. But if this is all Atari had done, we probably wouldn’t be dedicating an entire episode to it. Atari also played a major role in getting video games into the home with the Atari 2600 console. Video games were becoming a part of peoples’ everyday lives and they were becoming a part of popular culture. But Atari wasn’t the only video game company in the 1970s, it wasn’t even the first. So we’re going talk about some of the other companies that took part in the war for a place in our living rooms next week!

+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky hey, even just the history of say... world of warcraft has some rather cool events in it, like the time there was a worldwide epidemic in wow, killing off pretty much every player and having the npc's being immortal carriers that spread it, none of which was intentional, in the end they had to reset all the servers and remove the boss that originally caused it. it was great!

So in Go, pieces are 'in atari' when they are under threat of being captured. So when rumors circulate that some big company might buy Atari (as happens now and then), could it be said that Atari is in atari?

one thousand years in the future. "and this is when the ancient religion of Atari began to fade. we are not quite sure what the role of console was nor who filled the position but we do know that they began to use unapproved ritualistic "games" and this started the decline of the Church of Atari. in their final breath they used a forbidden ritual called ET Atari and thus brought a 10 year loss of anyone who practiced the philosophy of "Video Games" only to be resurrected by the powerful Nintendo. still existing today it nearly died off from heresy groups like "playstation" and then "Xbox" but then the "console wars" began. we are not quite sure how the war operated nor how many people died on those "black fridays" but we do know the battles tended to happen in arenas known as Walmarts. but that aside, we know that these two churches distorted each other thus leaving Nintendo the only one left. this is quite fascinating as Nintendo was known for its bad leaders nearly distorting themselves such as Pope Phillip CD-I and then Arch-bishop Wii-U.

Atari is not the same company amore. Only the name remains. Atari was sold in 1998 to Hasbro Interactive, which was bought by Infogrames in 2001. On June 22, 2014, Atari announced a new corporate strategy that would include a focus on "new audiences", specifically "LGBT, social casinos, real-money gambling, and RU-vid". Well.. There's that.

Brick Tamland And the way I always heard it, before it became a rule, it was considered rude and discourteous NOT to announce it when you checked your opponent, maybe it was one of those things that varied from culture to culture. Wonder how many international incidents that created?

The last line that "Atari still exists" is wrong. There is a Company known as Atari that exists today, but it's not the same company, nor does it own many if any of the copyrights other than the name of Atari that the original Company is known for. This is because Atari was broken up and/or sold off then bought up and then broken up and sold off with the name being integrated into one of the several companies that took part in one of the iterations because the name has history behind it. Further, if I remember right, there were 2 companies that had the Atari name but one was like "Atari Interactive" much like there is Sony Pictures and Sony Online Entertainment, but in the case of Atari the 2 companies had bought various holdings of the Atari company or one of the companies that bought parts of the Atari company which made them think they could use the name, but have nothing to do with the original Atari. Not quite important to the overall thing you guys are doing, but you could do a cross over with the economics and philosophy series on this topic as a special.

There ought to be an episode on tabletop wargaming. And something that isn't just an afterthought, wargaming was basically the hardcore gaming experience for the century before videogames and ttRPGs. And an episode on gambling games, and board games. Since those are more comparable to the ancient games than videogames and D&D are now.
@stevemanart
@stevemanart 8 лет назад
also, are we gonna get an episode on Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson?

+Dennis X (Steveman): I really hope so.
@argella1300
@argella1300 8 лет назад
+Dennis X (Steveman) I would expect that we are, considering that the combat system that basically all rpgs use today is based on the d20 system popularized by D&D.
@stevemanart
@stevemanart 8 лет назад
argella1300 oh my sweet summer child, the "d20 system" didn't get invented until 1998. It is loosly inspired by AD&D's THAC0 system that came before, but was not the same thing. For example, you wanted lower defense and attack numbers. I can literally go on for hours, on how modern D&D while having roots in Gary and Dave's games are not actually those games anymore, and how the games changed over time. but we both have better things to do. But yes, the first adventure style games with mechanical combat were D&D inspired things that were released the same year that 0E went on sale. I am just concerned here because outside of tabletop history dedicated learning, almost all of it that I've encountered overlooks or downplays the importance of tabletop.

breakout used the paddle controllers for the 2600. that's why you were having difficulty using a joystick on your controller. And another thing. The 2600, even though it was considered innovative to have programmable cartridges, the 2600 was not the first to use them. The Fairchild Channel F was the first home console to use programmable cartridges. However, the system was not a big success.

Kind of left out a couple key points. Bushnell came up with Pong after seeing a demo by Ralph Baer that became the Magnavox Odyssey. Magnavox would later sue Atari and win a huge settlemet from them along with settlements from Pong clone makers. Also Atari was not the first to make cartridges that honer goes to the Fairchild Channel F aka the Video Entertainment System. Granted Atari's 2600 greatly outclassed the Fairchild, but still give credit where it is due, fact check and try to go back to avoiding the great man history that Crash Course usually does.

+Riyaan Abrahams True, they are, what was once, Infograms, who just bought the brand name from Hasbro. Hasbro had acquired the name from what was left of Atari when they folded. At that time, Atari Corporation was only the home computers and home consoles. The arcade division (Atari Games) was part of Williams Electronics and was made a division of another company they owned, Midway Manufacturing. Also, the host mentioned Atari put out great games like Centipede, Tempest, and Pitfall! but Pitfall! was by Activision, a company that DOES still exist.

Atari did not introduce the interchangeable game cartridge. Depending on what your definition of a Game Cartridge is, it was the Magnavox Odyssey released 5 years earlier than the 2600 since it has interchangeable circuits. However if you are talking about interchangeable Game ROM Cartridge it was the Fairchild Channel F released 1 year before the 2600. As well Pitfall was invented by Activision, which was playable on the Atari 2600.

I believe up in New Hampshire at Funspot(worlds largest arcade) they have a Computer Space in a metallic red cabinet there. Heard from Johns Arcades channel its supposed to be the first arcade cabinet or supposedly predated Pong. One of my favorite little known arcade games is Crazy Kong-a early hack of Donkey Kong by Falcon which can be found across the east coast. Also never knew Atari got its name from the oldest board game from ancient China(Go) Hmm I wonder if in this playlist if I’ll hear anything about the Emulation world and piracy of roms, both very interesting subjects in gaming history.

8:58 that must be quite a new cartridge, given the SD card reader and the mini-USB, presumably it's to make homebrew games in recent times

I have a question. The "paddle" glides quite smoothly when you play Breakout. Is this true to the times or because you are emulating on a faster processor? If the former, that's impressive

If I am not mistaken, Go is a game originated from China but not Japan.

Actually, Atari did not innovate the interchangeable cartridge, that distinction belongs to the Fairchild Channel F. With lovely banana yellow carts and woodgrain finish. High concept there.

Great video, thanks. Just one small correction: "Go" is an ancient Chinese strategy game, not a Japanese one.

The clones of Pong actually meant that Atari had to innovate to increase their profit. This lead to the rapid advancement of the gaming industry, which was beneficial to the whole society.
