The Atari Falcon IDE interface stores its data in Big-Endian format (as was natural for a 68030-based computer), but unfortunately it quickly became the standard to store IDE data in Little-Endian format.
Using modern removable media such as CF cards and SD cards with adapters on the IDE interface to your Falcon is common, but it's inconvenient to mount them in modern machines because of the need to image the media and byteswap it in software even though common Atari hard disc drivers, like HD Driver allow the partitions to be read on Windows and MacOS as well as the Falcon.
This board dynamically swaps the bytes in hardware without the register-breaking changes that a traditional 'twisted cable' approach applies. This means that you can auto-boot HD Driver from a byte-swapped SD or CF card, partition it with dual Atari/Windows partition compatibility and load the same SD card directly in your Windows or MacOS machine to copy files at pace.

Now your Mac can fill your Atari hard disks with all it's wonderful hidden metadata files :) Sorry just teasing (It used to annoy me when I owned a Mac!) But yes this Falcon disk adapter is brilliant, I might make one, thanks for your hard work!

Very true. I believe cp -x helps a bit (cf. Pico programming issues on the Mac)

LOL! Windows has a similarly annoying "feature" - some hidden recycler folder or something, and image preview files etc.

Should be able to pull the extra pins with pliers? I tend to just pull the first pair of pins and then run a coping saw down the space. Touch up with a finishing file.

Good idea. Hadn’t really put too much thought into beautification!

So if I understood all correctly - if I have a dual cf card in my Falcon - I can setup one card for copying files from Mac and Windows - by setting up to do software byteswapping - via HD Driver - and the other to be my usual bootable. To get files moved on - and then copy over to boot card as needed on the Falcon side...

What you describe is how people have been using their Falcons up to now. This device allows you to use a single CF/SD card in your Falcon that will be accessible both on the PC and Atari, and most importantly BOOTABLE. The problem with HD Driver is if you enable it's internal "byte-swap" feature, that memory card will no longer be bootable. By moving the "byte-swap" smarts into this hardware, not only are data transfer speeds much faster (you're no longer using the Atari CPU to do it for you) but you're selective in what you byte-swap so CF card is detected correctly, bootable, and treated like a native drive both on the Atari and PC.

Thanks @leonkiriliuk, that pretty much nails it.

Can you help how to program the cpld with raspberry pi2, what is the pin order how to connect it with programming? This is great product i just ordered one batch of pcb's and trying to get one working, does this also work on STE if it has ide build in?

Hi there. These are the two links I've seen referenced:- linuxjedi.co.uk/2021/11/25/revisiting-xilinx-jtag-programming-from-a-raspberry-pi/ and anastas.io/hardware/2020/09/29/xc9500-cpld-raspberry-pi-xc3sprog.html. Don't connect the 3V3 line (pin one). Power the board from its own regulator.

Can u build me one of these great boards or are they available somewhere already assembled???

PCBWay will build you a board with all the SMT components populated, but you'd have to do the through-hole parts and flash the CPLD (you could use a Pi). See my PCBWay Community page for that. Unfortunately there's not anyone making complete boards, AFAIK.

is the atari ide compatible or is it scsi???

@@DieselPLL i asked because i heard weird errors happening when ide on scsi device I wouldn't of thought atari would of had ide back then ide as as a standard interface didn't become standard until 95/96

SCSI device on an IDE bus simply won’t work. Definitely IDE but very early days in 1992. Amiga 600 and 1200 similarly early adopters.
